How to transfer data to another computer using Windows Files and Settings Transfer Wizard

This document explains the basic steps for transferring data to another computer using Microsoft's Files and Settings Transfer Wizard on systems running Microsoft Windows XP.

To get started, the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard needs to run on the computer you are transferring the data to. Then, the wizard needs to run on the source computer, using a small or home office network, a direct cable connection, a floppy drive or some other form of removable media.

Running the wizard on the target computer
  1. On the target computer (computer you are transferring the data to), click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, select System Tools, then click Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.
  2. From the Welcome to the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard screen, click Next.

  3. Verify that New computer is selected, then click Next.

  4. From the Do you have a Windows XP CD screen, select I want to create a Wizard Disk in the following drive: then click Next.

  5. Insert the removable media (floppy disk, CDRW, DVDRW) into the appropriate drive on the target computer. The wizard will create the disk and prompt you to go to the source computer (computer you are transferring the data from).

Running the wizard on the source computer using a small or home office network
  1. Insert the Wizard disk into the source computer.
  2. Click Start, then click Run...
  3. Type a:\FASTWiz, then click OK.
  4. From the Welcome to the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard screen, click Next.

  5. Verify that Old Computer is selected, then click Next.

  6. From the Select a transfer method screen, select Home or small office network, then click Next.
    Note: In order to use this method you must have a local area network (LAN) in place.

  7. Select Both files and settings, then click Next. Depending on the amount of data being transferred, the process may take several minutes to complete.
  8. Once the files have been collected from the target computer, a password window will appear on both the target and source computer. Enter the password shown on the target computer in the text box on the source computer.

  9. Once all the settings and files have been applied, click Finished. In order for the changes to take effect, you must restart your computer.

Running the wizard on the source computer using a direct cable connection
  1. Insert the Wizard disk into the source computer.
  2. Click Start, then click Run...
  3. Type a:\FASTWiz, then click OK.
  4. From the Welcome to the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard screen, click Next.

  5. Verify that Old Computer is selected, then click Next.

  6. From the Select a transfer method screen, select Direct Cable, then click Next.

  7. From the Set up your serial connection screen:
    1. Connect the computers with a serial cable.
    2. On the target computer, click Next.
    3. Click Autodetect on both the source and target computer to select the serial port setting.
    4. After a successful connection has been verified, click Next.
  8. Once all the settings and files have been applied, click Finished. In order for the changes to take effect, you must restart your computer.

Running the wizard on the source computer using a floppy drive or other removable media
  1. Insert the Wizard disk into the source computer.
  2. Click Start, then click Run...
  3. Type a:\FASTWiz, then click OK.
  4. From the Welcome to the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard screen, click Next.

  5. Verify that Old Computer is selected, then click Next.

  6. From the Select a transfer method screen, select Floppy Drive or other removable media, then click Next.
    Note: Both the the target computer and the source computer must have the same type of drive in order to transfer data using this method.

  7. Format, prepare, and insert your floppy disk or other removable media, then click Next.
    Note: If you are using 3.5 inch floppy disks to transfer files and settings, you may need multiple disks. If you are prompted for additional floppy disks, insert another blank 3.5 inch floppy disk and label the disk in sequence (Example: Disk 1, Disk 2). Repeat this process until the wizard finishes.
  8. From the Completing the Collection phase screen, click Finish.
  9. Return to the target computer and click Next.
  10. Insert the the first 3.5 inch floppy disk drive or other removable media and click Next.
    Insert any additional 3.5 inch floppy disks when prompted.
  11. Once all the settings and files have been applied, click Finished. In order for the changes to take effect, you must restart your computer.
