An Intel 320 Series Solid State Drive (SSD) with Lenovo Firmware LE05 or Intel Firmware 0362 (or earlier) will not correctly report the built-in hardware self encryption capability to centrally managed encryption solutions.

When installing a centrally managed encryption solution on a system configured with an Intel 320 Series solid state disk drive, the drive may fail to properly report the encryption status due to word 69, bit 4 (the ATA IDENTIFY DEVICE bit that indicates "device encrypts all user data") not being set by the factory. This may also affect any Intel 320 Series SSD's offered by Lenovo as option parts or field replacement units, as well as generic-sku Intel drives. This bit does not affect the drive's ability to encrypt, as the drive is always encrypting using an AES-128 bit encryption algorithm. This bit enables the drive to report the encryption status correctly.
Intel and Lenovo have worked closely to provide a solution for this issue. To resolve this issue, the user should download the following utility which will upgrade the firmware on the Intel 320 Series SSD to Lenovo Version LE06 or Intel version 0380.
For detailed instructions, see the documentation in the attachment above. This utility will automatically update any affected drives when executed without parameters. It is recommended that the machine be rebooted after executing the update.
Under Microsoft Windows XP, this firmware update may fail to execute properly if the SATA controller is configured in Legacy IDE mode. Data loss will not occur and the firmware version number will not update.
Use a machine with either Microsoft Windows Vista or Windows 7 in order to successfully perform the update. Alternatively, configure Microsoft Windows XP to function with the SATA controller in AHCI mode.
