How to install a printer

If you are attaching a printer for the first time, you must install the proper printer driver or software and the printer cable must be compatible with the connector interface on your system. Most new printers come with installer programs. Depending on your system, you can use one of the following ways to connect:

Bluetooth
IEEE 1394
Infrared
Parallel
Serial
Universal Serial Bus (USB)
Before you install your device

Refer to the manual provided with the printer to determine whether a driver should be installed before you connect the device. Typically, Microsoft Windows detects a new device after you connect it, and then installs the driver automatically. However, some devices require you to install the driver before plugging the device in.

Also, while most devices that have power switches should be turned on before you connect them, others require that you turn them on during the installation process. Because of issues like this, it is always a good idea to read the instructions included with a new device before you connect it.

If you run into problems while installing a printer, or if you have added a printer but are unable to use it, you might need to install or update the printer driver so that it is compatible with the version of Windows you are running. Some drivers ship with Windows, are available through Windows Update, or are saved to your computer through the hardware installation process and are ready to install. In other cases, you will need to install drivers using a CD or DVD provided by the printer manufacturer. If the driver you need is not already stored on your computer or if you do not have a CD or DVD, try searching the printer manufacturer's Web site to see if you can download and install it from there.
