IE9 64bit Crash when running Optimus and gpu enabled - ThinkPad
Symptom
If running the Windows 7 OS with Internet Explorer 9 (64bit application) on a Lenovo Laptop with Optimus graphics, there is a possibility of a application crash. No BSoD has been noted with this crash and other applications and aspects of Windows 7 OS will continue to work as expected. This application crash can only be seen by UNchecking the Internet Explorer 9 internet option under the advanced tab called: Use Software rendering instead of GPU rendering. This option can be found under Tools -> Internet Options then select the advanced tab. It is the first option list under Accelerated graphics. The default for this option is checked.
Affected configurations
ThinkPad T410, T410i, T410s, T410si with Optimus graphics and Windows 7.
ThinkPad T420, T420i, T420s, T410si with Optimus graphics and Windows 7.
ThinkPad T510, T510i with Optimus graphics and Windows 7.
ThinkPad T520, T520i,W520 with Optimus graphics and Windows 7.
Solution
There is a new driver from Nvidia (tm) that will correct this issue. It is currently being tested and is expected to be release mid summer 2011. For the present time it is recommend that this option (Use Software rendering instead of GPU rendering) remain in its default state (checked). and not be unchecked until the new driver from Nvidia (tm) is released
