Symptom

How to identify specific on-board Ethernet LED lights information in order to differentiate Speed and Link/Active status.

Affected configurations

Any of the following ThinkCentre systems running Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition and Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack:

  • ThinkCentre A50 (type 8320)
  • ThinkCentre A50p (type 8192, 8193, 8194, 8195, 8196, 8197, 8432, 8433)
  • ThinkCentre A51 (type 8129, 8131, 8132, 8133, 8134, 8135, 8136, 8137, 8138, 9212)
  • ThinkCentre A52 (type 8287, 8289, 8296, 8298, 8327, 8328, 8340, 8341, 8343, 8344, 8381, 8382)
  • ThinkCentre A55 (type 9636, 9638 9640, 9641)
  • ThinkCentre M50 (type 8128, 8185, 8186, 8187, 8188, 8189, 8190, 8413, 8414, 8415)
  • ThinkCentre M51e (type 9213)
  • ThinkCentre M52 (type 8099, 8110, 8111, 8112, 8113, 8114, 8115, 8116, 8211, 8212, 8213, 8214, 8215, 9210, 9211)
  • ThinkCentre M52e (type 8299)
  • ThinkCentre M55e (type 9642, 9643, 9644, 9645)
  • ThinkCentre S50 (type 8092, 8183, 8184, 8416, 8417, 8418, 8429)
Solution

The Speed LED (located on the left-hand side of the Desktop when viewed from the rear) is colored orange with Gigabit connections, green with Fast Ethernet (100M bit) connections and is turned off with Ethernet (10M bit) connections.

The Link/Active LED (located on the right-hand side of the Desktop when viewed from the rear) blinks yellow when there is an active link connection.
