Microsoft Windows XP limitations - ThinkPad i Series 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500 (machine types 2621, 2651 only)

This tip contains the limitations for the specific models listed in the affected configurations section in each symptom, however there are more limitations that apply to these and all ThinkPad systems that support Windows XP. Click here to view the Windows XP limitations for all ThinkPad systems.

I. Power Management

  • Symptom
    The system resumes from Standby state when attaching or detaching the AC adapter.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad i Series 1400 (machine type 2621) systems

    Solution
    Do not attach or detach the AC adapter while the system is in this sleep state.

    Additional information
    This is a hardware limitation. Normally, the system will resume by activity such as waking the system by using the USB input device.

  • Symptom
    When you set a program in Scheduled Tasks to wake the system to run this task and enter hibernation, the system cannot resume from hibernation at the scheduled time.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad s30 and i S30 systems

    Solution
    Nothing

    Additional information
    This is a hardware limitation of the machine with all supported operating systems.
  • Symptom
    Waking from standby with the Microsoft USB Natural Keyboard or the Microsoft USB IntelliMouse causes the system to go into hibernation.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad i Series 1400 and 1500 (machine type 2621 and 2651) systems

    Solution
    This is a hardware limitation.

    Additional information
    This will be resolved in the next version of Windows.

  • Symptom
    Two playback windows are opened when you try to play DVD at 1024x768 pixels and 32bit or 24bit color display setting.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad i Series 1400 and 1500 (machine types 2621 and 2651) systems

    Solution

    Change the display settings to 800x600.

    Additional information
    Caused by insufficient VGA memory. At 1024x768 pixels and 32bit or 24bit color display settings, DVD express cannot get enough memory to be executed.

  • Symptom
    When Dual Display is enabled, a blank screen is displayed on one display while playing DVD.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad i Series 1200 and 1300 systems

    Solution
    DVD playback is not supported for Dual Display.

    Additional information
    DVD playback will be disabled when Dual Display is enabled due to insufficient bandwidth.
  • Symptom
    Screen disappears after switching displays by pressing the Fn + F7 keys while playing a PC game or DVD.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad i Series 1200 and 1300 systems

    Solution
    Switch display, after terminating the application.

    Additional information
    This is currently under investigation.

  • Symptom
    The dual display feature does not work on ThinkPad I Series 1400-1500.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad i Series 1400 and 1500 (machine types 2621 and 2651) systems

    Solution

    Nothing

    Additional information
    Windows XP native ATI Mobility-128 driver does not support the function.

  • Symptom
    It takes approximately 20 seconds to switch from LCD to external display by Fn + F7 key.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad i Series 1400 and 1500 (machine types 2621 and 2651) systems

    Solution

    When its available, IBM will post the BIOS that will fix the problem on the IBM ThinkPad 1400 and 1500 Device Driver File Matrix Web site.

    Additional information
    The BIOS uses incorrect value for this function.

III. Miscellaneous

  • Symptom
    The Media Center button on CD-ROM drive and the shortcut key on the keyboard do not work with CD-Player after upgrading Windows XP over the preloaded operating system.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad i Series 1400 and 1500 (machine types 2621 and 2651) systems

    Solution

    This function does not work in Windows XP because the CD-Player does not exist in Windows XP, and the link between the button or shortcut key and the CD-Player goes away.

    Additional information
    This button was assigned to play CD-Player on the preloaded operating system, but the CD-Player does not exist in Windows XP.

  • Symptom
    Multiple logon users cannot use IBM Easy Launch Buttons at the same time.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad i Series 1200, 1300, 1400 and 1500 (machine types 2621 and 2651) systems

    Solution

    IBM Easy Launch Buttons does not support the multi-user environments.
