Base cover and PC Card/ExpressCard (or ExpressCard/Smart Card) bezel assembly removal and installation - ThinkPad R500

For access, remove these FRUs in order:

  1. Battery.
  2. Serial Ultrabay Enhanced device.
  3. Hard disk drive cover, hard disk drive, and hard disk rubber rails
  4. Palm rest or palm rest with fingerprint reader.
  5. Keyboard.
  6. PCI Express Mini Card for wireless LAN
  7. Keyboard bezel and speakers
  8. LCD assembly

Attention: Before step (7), be sure that the Serial Ultrabay Enhanced device eject lever has not popped out. It must be housed in its position as shown in the figure (a)

Remove the security hole bracket as in this figure.

Remove the RJ11 cable and the ODD SW cable as in this figure. In step (2), strip the securing taps off.

When removing the PC Card/ExpressCard bezel assembly, do as shown in this figure.

When removing the ExpressCard/Smart Card bezel assembly, do as shown in this figure.

Applying labels to the base cover:

The new base cover FRU is shipped with a kit containing labels of several kinds. When you replace the base cover, you need to apply the following labels:

  1. Product label
  2. Homologation label

Following labels need to be peeled off from the old base cover, and need to be put on the new base cover.

  1. Serial number label
  2. Wireless LAN LMA label
  3. Windows license label (COA)
  4. Wireless LAN MAC address label
  5. China modem label
  6. Israel label
  7. SIRIM label
  8. MAC address label

For some models, you also need to apply one or two FCC labels. Check the old base cover; if it has one or two FCC labels, find duplicates of them in the label kit and apply them to the new base cover.
