This procedure describes how to remove and replace the system board.

Important:

The heat sink and microprocessor might be very hot. Make sure these components are cool enough to safely handle before continuing this procedure.

1. Open the cover. See "cover removal".
2. Place the computer on its side to help make the system board more accessible.
3. Remove any adapter cards installed in the PCI connectors. See "Adapter card removal and installation".
4. Remove the hard disk drive fan. See "Fan assembly removal and installation".
5. Carefully take note of the location of all cable connections on the system board and disconnect all cables. See "Locating system board connectors and components".
6. Remove the screws (9) that secure the system board to the chassis.
7. Lift the system board out of the chassis.
8. Remove the memory modules from the failing system board and install them in the same location on the new system board.
9. Remove the heat sink from the failing system board. See "Heat sink removal and installation".
10. Remove the microprocessor from the failing system board and install it on the new system board. See "Microprocessor removal and installation".
11. Install the heat sink on the new system board. See "Heat sink removal and installation".
12. Connect the heat sink and fan assembly cable to the new system board. See "Locating system board connectors and components".
13. Install the new system board into the chassis and align the screw holes with those in the chassis. Insert and tighten the screws that secure the system board.
14. Install the hard disk drive fan. See "Fan assembly removal and installation".
15. Connect all cables to the system board. See the system board illustration for your machine type at "Locating System board connectors and components".
