• After the Resetting the Cryptographic Key of FDE is done, you cannot boot your computer from the HDD nor read data in the HDD. The HDD itself makes a cryptographic key and manages it, but the ThinkPad computer does not store any cryptographic key information. Once a new cryptographic key is defined by doing the Resetting the Cryptographic Key, as there is no way to restore the previous key, recovery of the HDD data is impossible.

• If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the software. To determine if you should update the software, refer to the Version Information section.
• The tool enables or disables both menus at the same time.

1. Prepare a DOS bootable floppy disk and a floppy disk drive.
2. Unzip 7KFD03WW.ZIP file and extract DRVMENU.EXE file.
3. Copy the DRVMENU.EXE to the floppy disk.
4. Attach the floppy disk drive to the ThinkPad computer, and insert the floppy disk.
5. Turn on the computer.
6. Type the following and press Enter at the command prompt to run the DRVMENU.EXE.
   • To know the current setting (the setting is displayed), drvmenu
   • To enable the menu, drvmenu -e
   • To disable the menu, drvmenu -d

If the request is processed, the program returns 0. Otherwise, it returns 255 with an error message.

1. Download 7KFD0xWW.ISO where x indicates a digit.
2. Use CD-R, CD-RW blank media and a writing software to create the DOS bootable media.
3. Place written CD-R, CD-RW media on an Optical Disc Drive (ODD) of supported ThinkPad.
4. Confirm the ODD being a bootable device in BIOS Setup/Boot menu.
5. Turn off the computer then turn on.
6. Type the following and press Enter at the command prompt to run the DRVMENU.EXE.
   • To know the current setting (the setting is displayed), drvmenu
   • To enable the menu, drvmenu -e
   • To disable the menu, drvmenu -d

If the request is processed, the program returns 0. Otherwise, it returns 255 with an error message.

Notes:

• A new entry, 'Disk Encryption HDD', will be shown in the Security menu of the BIOS Setup Utility menu if the HDD with FDE (Full Disk Encryption) is embedded in the ThinkPad computer.
• An harddisk password will be deleted by this process.

3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
   The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed.
   If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
4. Select the Security menu of the BIOS Setup Utility menu.
5. Select the Disk Encryption HDD menu.
   The following message is displayed.
   Reset the key of the HDD in the HDD bay [Enter]
6. Press Enter key.
   Hitting Enter key makes showing next caution message and confirmation.
7. 'Yes' confirmation shows next confirmation message.
8. If a harddisk password was set, a password prompt appears. Type the correct password.
9. Further process will start after entering the harddisk password.
10. Press F3 key several times to exit the BIOS Setup Utility.

Notes:

• A new entry, 'Solid State Drive', will be shown in the Security menu of the BIOS Setup Utility menu if the SSD (Solid State Drive) is embedded in the ThinkPad computer.

Self-encrypting mass storage devices contain an encryption key that is used to encrypt data to be stored on the drive and decrypt that data when it is requested. Self-encrypting mass storage devices support an option to delete their existing encryption key and create a new one. Executing this command causes all data on the device to be permanently lost. The command can be executed manually from the BIOS options screen on the PC. It can also be executed using Lenovo's Central Management of BIOS Settings feature, available on select ThinkPads.
