Installing Windows Me and its device drivers on a blank hard disk drive - ThinkPad X21

This document contains instructions for installing Microsoft Windows Millennium (Me) onto a system with a blank hard disk drive.

You will require the following device drivers to ensure that the system works properly. Click the package name to download the drivers.

Access ThinkPad application

Preparing your ThinkPad system for Windows Me

  1. Make sure the BIOS on your ThinkPad system is the latest.

Installing Windows Me

  1. Boot the Machine using a Microsoft Windows 98 boot disk.
  2. At command prompt change to the CD-ROM drive and insert the Windows Me compact disc (CD).
  3. At the DOS command, enter Setup.
  4. Press Enter (Now setup scans your Hard disk for errors).
  5. At the Welcome to Windows Me Setup screen, click the Next button.
  6. At the License Agreement screen, click I accept the agreement and then click the Next button.
  7. At the Windows Product Key screen, enter the CD key and click the Next button.
  8. At select directory screen, click the Next button (Let windows install in the recommended directory).
  9. At Setup Option, Select Portable and click the Next button.
  10. At User Information, type in Name and Company and click the Next button.
  11. At Windows Component, Select the default (Install the most common components) and click the Next button.
  12. At Network Identification, Enter Computer Name, Workgroup, Computer Description and click the Next button.
  13. At Country/Region, Select your country from the list and click the Next button.
  14. At Establish your Time Zone, Select your time zone from the list and click the Next button.
  15. At Insert Disk, Insert a blank Floppy disk in the floppy drive and click the OK button. You can skip creating the startup disk by clicking Cancel and continue with the installation procedure from step 17. Startup disk can also be created after Windows Me is installed.
  16. Remove the disk from the floppy drive and click the OK button.
  17. At Ready to Begin Copying files, click the Finish button. Setup will copy Windows files to your computer and reboot. When the machine reboots, hardware detection will occur, and once detection is complete, the machine will reboot. Once the machine reboots, the windows setup will setup the hardware and finalize settings and reboot again. Once the machine reboots, a normal windows desktop will be displayed.

Installing BIOS update
NOTE:

  • As written on LANClient Control Manager (LCCM) Compatibility and Configuration Guide, remove the Power-on password prior to flashing the BIOS in LCCM environment.
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program.
  • If your computer is attached to any kind of port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • Before using this BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, IBM recommends applying the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887.
  1. Print these instructions or display on another computer.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
  3. Start a supported version of Windows on the target computer.
  4. Make a temporary directory (for instance, C:\Temp) on the hard disk drive.
  5. Download the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory.
  6. Click the Start button, then click Run.
  7. In the Open dialogue box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility. (E.g. C:\Temp\filename.exe) Then press the Enter key.
  8. Follow the instructions. When completed, the system is automatically turned off.

    WARNING:
    Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

    After the update has been completed, do the following to make the changes effective.

  9. Make sure there is no diskette in the diskette drive, then turn on the computer.
  10. While the Press F1 for IBM BIOS Setup Utility message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  11. Verify the BIOS version and date.
  12. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
  13. Select Yes.
  14. Press the F10 key to save default configuration.
  15. Select Yes. The system will restart automatically.

Installing CD-ROM driver

  1. Start DOS.
  2. Insert the CDROM driver diskette into the diskette drive.
  3. Type A:UINSTALL and press enter.
  4. Select Install IBM ThinkPad CD-ROM Driver for DOS/Windows at the Installation Option Screen.
  5. After the installation is complete, remove the diskette from the diskette drive and restart the computer.

Installing Configuration utility

NOTE :

  • The default installation path and folder were changed from V1.14. If you already installed the previous version, uninstall it first or change the installation path and folder to the same as before.
  • If you are installing version 1.19b after uninstalling a previous version on Windows 2000, reboot the system after the uninstall.
  • The following additional packages may be needed (if supported):
  1. Start Windows 95/98/Me or 2000. If using Windows 2000, logon with administrative privilege.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run .
  4. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\UTILITY\SETUP.EXE to install the utility driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing On Screen display utility

For the versions with suffix i
NOTE:
If On Screen Display is already installed on your system, check the version number. In case that the previous version is earlier than 2.24i, you need to install the latest version of the ThinkPad Utility.

  1. Start Windows 95/98/Me, or start Windows NT 4.0/2000 and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ONSCR\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

For the versions without suffix i
The installation program of ThinkPad Utility for Windows 95/98/Me/ 2000 will ask you the place of the directory that this package is extracted to. Then, the installation program will install this package automatically. Please refer to the ThinkPad Utility for Windows 95/98/Me/2000 package for the details.

Installing Fast-swap driver for Windows Me (ACPI)

1. Start Windows Me.
2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
3. Click Start, then click Run.
4. Specify the SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package in the step 2, and click OK. The default location is C:\DRIVERS\WME\FASTSWAP
5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing Video driver (Mob-M/M1) for Windows Me

NOTE:
Make sure that DirectX 8 runtime modules are installed into the system before installing this driver. DirectX runtime modules are available at Microsoft's DirectX Resource Center.


WindowsMe

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract the Video feature driver onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE to install the video driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify the location instead.
  5. Select ATI Easy Install.
  6. When the Welcome window appears, click the Next button.
  7. At the Software License Agreement screen, if you agree, click Yes.
  8. Click Express Install.
  9. If the Digital Signature Notification window appears, follow these steps:
    Click the Advanced button.
    Select Warm when installing unsigned devices and click the OK button.
    Click the Yes button.
  10. Click the OK button.
  11. At Setup complete screen, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now and click Finish.

Installing Audio driver IV for Windows Me

NOTE: - To determine if you should update the audio driver, refer to the Summary of Changes section.

  1. Start Windows.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System Icon.
  5. Click the Device Manager tab.
  6. If you find "Crystal Sound Fusion(TM) CS4281 WDM Audio", then the audio driver has already been installed.
    If you find "PCI Multimedia Audio Device" under the Other Devices, then click the PCI Multimedia Audio Device to select it and
    click the Properties button.
  7. Click the Driver Tab and then the Update Driver button.
  8. Click Next twice in the Device Driver Update Wizard Window.
  9. Specify the location of the Disk by the path name in the step 2 and click Next. If you are asked, specify the location of the Disk in "Copy files from:" list and click OK. The file copy starts.
  10. After the installation of "Crystal SoundFusion(TM) CS4281 WDM Audio", click Finish. The system will detect New Hardware.

Installing Power management driver

Clean install:

  1. Start Windows 98 or Windows Me.
  2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click Add/Remove Hardware.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Select Unknown Device from the Devices: list. NOTE: If you see several 'unknown' devices, try the top one first. If the installation does not find the hardware information and does not complete the process, cancel it and try the next unknown device in the list.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Click Finish. The Unknown Device Properties window appears.
  10. Click Reinstall Driver button in General Page.
  11. Select Specify the location of the driver [Advanced] option.
  12. Click Next.
  13. Select Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want option.
  14. Click Next.
  15. Select Other devices.
  16. Click Next.
  17. Click Have Disk button.
  18. Specify the directory name where you extracted this package; then click on OK. The default location is C:\DRIVERS\W2K\IBMPM
  19. Select IBM PM Device from Models list; then click Next.
  20. Click Next.
  21. Click Finish.
  22. Restart the system.

Installing the Mediamatics DVDExpress video player update
NOTE:

  • Before installing, make sure that you have installed the following software:
    • Video Features for Windows 95/98/NT4.0
    • Audio Features for Windows 95/98/NT4.0
    • Mediamatics DVD-Video Player for Windows 95/98
  • This package cannot be installed without the Mediamatics DVD Express DVD-Video player installed on the system. This package is for upgrade purposes only.
  1. Start Microsoft Windows.
  2. Extract the package onto your hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\DVD\SETUP.EXE to install the upgrade DVD player. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. At the Welcome screen, click the Next button.
  6. If you agree to the license agreement, click the Yes button.
  7. To install to the default directory, click the Next button. It will uninstall the previous player, and then install the updated player.
  8. At the setup is complete window, click the Finish button.

NOTE: Depending on your specific machine type you will also need one or two of the drivers below:

Installing the Ethernet Mini PCI Combo Driver (3COM)

  1. If this is the first time the card has been installed an Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box for the PCI Ethernet Controller will appear. Press the Cancel button. If previous installation exists skip to step 2.
  2. Run setup.exe in 'lansetup directory. NOTE: This will uninstall any previous installations.
  3. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now. selection checked and press the Finish button on the Reboot dialog screen.
  4. Allow the system to reboot. If you need to insert the Ethernet card, turn off the power and do it now.
  5. Press the Next button in the Found New Hardware Wizard Dialog.
  6. Press the Next button with Search for a suitable driver.... radio button selected.
  7. Select Specify a Location and press the Next button.
  8. Enter C:\winnt\options\cabs in the dialog and press the OK button.
  9. Press the Next button on the dialog that has found the driver c:\winnt\options\cabs\net556n5.inf
  10. Press the Finish button The network adapter is now installed.

NOTE:* If you upgraded to Windows 2000 from a Windows 95/98 installation you will need to enter c:\windows\options\cabs instead.

DOS driver for unattended installation
For customers who need unattended installation, the DOS driver (EL556.dos) is included in landisk4\NDIS2 sub-directory in this package. The DOS driver can be used only for this purpose.
LANDISKS
LANDISK2 contains driver files for Windows 95 and NT.
LANDISK3 contains driver files for Windows 2000.
LANDISK4 contains NDIS2, NDIS3, and other miscellaneous drivers.
LANDISK5 contains driver files for Windows 98 SE/Gold.
LANDISK6 contains driver files for Windows Me.


Installing the Ethernet Mini PCI Combo driver (Intel)
Update install or clean install with Ethernet Controller listed in Other devices in Device Manager. To install the driver, follow the instructions below.

  1. Start Windows.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click System.
  5. Click Hardware.
  6. Click Device Manager.
  7. Click the + mark to expand Network adapters or Other Devices if there is no Network adapters section.
  8. Right-click Intel PRO/100 SP Mobile Combo Adapter or PCI Ethernet Controller, whichever is displayed, and click Properties.
  9. Click Driver.
  10. Click Update Driver.
  11. Click the Next button in the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard dialog box.
  12. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended), then click the Next button.
  13. Select Specify a location only in Optional search locations:.
  14. Click the Next button.
  15. Specify the directory name with the full path name where you extracted the package in the step 2 in Copymanufacturer's files from:, and click the OK button.
  16. Click the Next button. (After this step, the installer may say a Digital Signature not found message. Simply answer Yes if this message appears). The driver installation starts.
  17. Click the Finish button when the installation completes.
  18. Click Yes when prompted to restart the computer.

Clean install using New Hardware Found Wizard. To install the device driver, follow the instructions below.

  1. Extract this package onto the hard drive.
  2. Start Windows.
  3. It displays Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box.
  4. Click the Next button.
  5. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended), then click the Next button.
  6. Select Specify a location only in Optional search locations:, then click the Next button.
  7. Specify the directory name with the full path namewhere you extracted the package in the step 1 in Copy manufacturer's files from:, then click the OK button.
  8. Click the Next button. (After this step, the installer may say aDigital Signature not found message. Simply answer Yes if this message appears). The driver installation starts.
  9. Click the Finish button when the installation completes.
  10. Restart the computer.

Unattended Installation
For customers who need unattended installation, the DOS driver (E100B.DOS) is included in DOS sub-directory in this package. Unattended installation instructions are also included in PUSH sub-directory. The DOS driver can be used only for this purpose.

Installing the Modem driver for 3COM Mini PCI adapter

  1. With the power removed, install the modem if necessary.
  2. Start Windows Me.
  3. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk drive. This will make two directories: \3COM\MDMSETUP (Modem setup and application software) and \3Com\MDMDISK5 (Modem wdm driver)
  4. Click Start, then click Run.
  5. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9x\MODEM\MDMSETUP\SETUP.EXE. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  6. Click the Next button on the Welcome dialog screen.
  7. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now box checked and click the Finish button at the Setup Complete dialog screen. The system will restart.
  8. Click the OK button at the Insert Disk dialog screen.
  9. At the second Insert disk dialog screen, in the Copy files from: field, type c:\windows\options\cabs and click the OK button.
  10. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete modem installation.

Installing the Modem driver for Intel Mini PCI adapter

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Click the Start button, then click Run.
  3. Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you unpacked Intel PRO/100 SP Mobile Combo Adapter Software for Windows Me driver files and press Enter.
  4. Follow the instructions. If you see the message Digital Signature Not Found, please click the OK button to continue installing.

Installing the Lucent Modem driver for Windows Me

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package in the step 2, and click OK.
  5. Follow the instructions If the message window that says Digital Signature Not Found, click Yes button.

Installing the CMD Ultra DMA IDE Driver

  1. Make sure the system is NOT docked and start Windows Me
  2. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IDE\WINME\SETUP.EXE to install the CMD driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Click Yes when prompted Do you want to continue? with the install of the CMD Bus Master Driver V2.2.4(Apr 14, 2000 09:56:55).
  6. Click No to restart the system
  7. Close all open windows and applications and shutdown and power-off the system.
  8. Dock the system and power-on.
  9. The Add New Hardware Wizard will detect the CMD PCI-0648 Ultra DMA IDE Controller. To install the updated driver, click the Next button.
  10. Select Search for the best driver for your device and click the Next button.
  11. Check Specify a location: then change the location to point to the subdirectory of the new driver, C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IDE\WINME and click the OK button.
  12. Click the Next button.
  13. When prompted What do you want to install?, ensure the CMD PCI-0648 Ultra DMA IDE Controller is listed and click the Next button. If not, select One of the other drivers and attempt to choose the correct CMD driver manually.
  14. Click the Next button.
  15. Click the Finish button.
  16. Click the OK button to confirm the dock profile creation and click the OK button to restart the system.

Installing the Windows Me Supplement package

Solving Swap function in ACPI mode

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard drive.
  3. Open the Windows Explorer.
  4. Find C:\DRIVERS\WME\SUPP\ACPI\APM2ACPI.REG file, and double click it. Then the following Registry Editor's message will appear. Are you sure you want to add the information C:\DRIVERS\WME\SUPP\ACPI\APM2ACPI.REG to the registry?
  5. Click Yes. Successful windows message will be displayed.
  6. Click the OK button to exit the registry editor, and reboot the system.

Applying IBM LCD Color Profile

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Right-click the desktop to open Display Properties.
  4. Click Settings tab.
  5. Click Advanced.
  6. Click Monitor tab, then Change.
  7. Click Have Disk.
  8. Specify the location where the file IBMTPLCD.INF is located. and then click the OK button.
  9. Select IBMTPLCD.INF.
  10. Select one panel in the list you are using now.
  11. Click Apply.
  12. Select Color management tab to make sure IBMTPLCD is loaded.

Installing the TrackPoint driver
NOTE: Before installing this driver, you must uninstall the current program.

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon.
  5. Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the System Properties window.
  6. Double-click Mouse.
  7. Double-click either PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port or PS/2 TrackPoint whichever choice appears in the list.
  8. Click the Driver tab.
  9. Click the Update Driver button. The Update Device Driver Wizard runs.
  10. Click Specify the location of the driver (Advanced).
  11. Click the Next button.
  12. Click Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want.
  13. Click the Next button.
  14. Click the Have Disk button.
  15. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Then click the OK button. Then driver list appears.
  16. Click IBM PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
  17. Click the Next button.
  18. Click the Finish button in the Update Device Driver Wizard window.
  19. Close the IBM PS/2 TrackPoint Properties window.
  20. Close the System Properties window.
  21. Restart your computer to make the new settings active.

Installing Access ThinkPad application

NOTES:

  • Before installing the Access ThinkPad package, you must download and install the ThinkPad Configuration Utility for Windows 95/98/Me/2000 or Windows NT.
  • Also required is the ThinkPad Hot Key Utility.
  • The above steps are needed to activate the "ThinkPad" button. This button will launch Access ThinkPad if it is available on your system.

Installation instructions

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive. The default Extract directory is C:\DRIVERS\ATP_PKG
  3. Change to this directory and execute SETUP.EXE.
  4. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
