Overview - ThinkPad 1721

IBM has enhanced it's very affordable ThinkPad i Series 1721 notebook computer by offering an Intel Mobile Pentium II processor at 300 MHz. Its integrated all-in-one design provides quick and easy access to DVD, hard disk drive, diskette drive, and 56K modem. Advanced function can be achieved by using the UltraBay FX with an optional second hard drive or a second battery.

The ThinkPad i Series 1721 features a powerful Intel Mobile Pentium II processor at 300 MHz(1) with 512 K L2 cache plus:

  • 14.1-inch (measured diagonally) XGA (Active Matrix) TFT display
  • 64 MB SDRAM memory, expandable to 256 MB
  • 5.4 GB HDD(2)
  • DVD
  • 56 K modem(3)
  • Long-life Li-Ion battery

1. MHz only measures internal clock speed, not application performance. Many factors affect application performance.

3. The modem is designed to receive data up to 56 Kbps from a compatible service provider and transmit data up to 31.2 Kbps. Public networks currently limit maximum download speeds to about 53 Kbps. Actual speeds depend on many factors and are often less than the maximum possible.

The XGA (Active Matrix) 14.1-inch (measured diagonally) display provides superior viewing and helps reduce the glare indoors. Razor-sharp pictures are ideal for group viewing.

Ergonomically designed for comfort, the ThinkPad i Series 1721 features a full-sized keyboard with a roomy sculpted palm rest. The TrackPoint IV with Press-to-Select provides extremely accurate and convenient pointer and cursor control. Press the TrackPoint itself to speed program launches and reduce keystrokes. In addition, the exclusive
TrackPoint pointing device has an Internet Scroll Bar that liberates users from the stationary scroll bar at the side of the window and allows for quick Web page scrolling. It even works on documents and spreadsheets.

The ThinkPad i Series 1721 uses non-parity, 64-bit SDRAM memory. Standard memory is 64 MB, expandable to a maximum of 256 MB with 32 MB, 64 MB, or 128 MB cards.

CardBus PC card and Zoomed Video Port PC card are supported.

All-in-one design provides quick and easy access. The i Series 1721 includes a high-capacity 5.4 GB HDD, 1.44 MB diskette drive, and DVD.

Add function, including an additional HDD or a second battery to expand hard-disk capacity or to increase battery time as much as an additional four hours.

The audio subsystem supports multimedia applications enhanced with 16-bit stereo audio compatible with Sound Blaster Pro. It includes built-in stereo speakers and an extremely quick DVD device. Excellent stereo speakers are located on the bottom of the display to direct sound right at the user and provide maximum stereo separation. Along with the
Dynamic Equalization Circuit, which uses proprietary bass boost and signal equalization techniques, the i Series 1721 produces sound with outstanding clarity and dynamic impact.

These systems have the full complement of ports (enhanced parallel, serial, external display, and USB port). The Universal Serial Bus (USB) port, which connects external drives, is supported only by Windows 98.

The system has PCI bus support with advanced video acceleration, providing exceptional video performance. Advanced multimedia features include a NeoMagic MagicGraph 128-bit SVGA accelerator with 2.5 MB video memory for amazing 3D graphics support for MPEG-1 video playback.

Using the 56K(1) integrated modem, you can cruise the Web or send e-mail and files easily. V.90 compatibility ensures connectivity to the maximum number of modems by implementing internationally recognized standards.
