This document describes the installation procedures for Microsoft Windows 98 and its software for your computer.
NOTE: You can install Windows 98 by restoring the original preloaded image from the Recovery CD. Refer to the User's Reference for how to use the Recovery CD.
Overall Procedure - Have the Windows 98 installation package in hand.
- Back up your software and personal data files on the hard disk.
- Create the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette using the Diskette Factory preloaded on the hard disk.
- Create the diskettes of the device drivers using the Diskette Factory. You need to create at least the following device driver diskettes:
NOTE: For UltraBay II hot swap driver, Windows 95 driver is available for Windows 98.
NOTE: If you have already formatted the hard drive, you can download these drivers by clicking on the links in the table above.
5. Install Windows 98 and the software.
Installing Microsoft Windows 98 If you are installing Windows 98 on a drive other than the C drive, more than 25 MB is required on the C drive. - Install the Windows 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
- Search for SETUP.EXE in the CD-ROM, and run the SETUP.EXE. Enter the following: src_cd:\tgt_dir\SETUP.EXE where src_cd is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive (D, E...) and tgt_dir is the directory that SETUP.EXE is in. For more information, refer to the SETUP.TXT in the Windows 98 CD-ROM.
- After Windows 98 is installed, insert the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette into the diskette drive.
- Click on Start -> Run.
- Type A:\PIXX4\APM2APM\APM2APM.REG and click OK.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- After the installation has finished, remove the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette from the diskette drive and restart the computer.
NOTE: Depending on the optional applications you install with Windows 98, your required disk space varies. The following information applies to installing only Windows 98 in your computer:
Full install on a FAT 16 drive: About 225 MB disk space is required. Depending on your system configuration and the options you select, the required space ranges from 165 MB to 355 MB.
Full install on a FAT 32 drive: About 175 MB disk space is required. Depending on your system configuration and the options you select, the required space ranges from 140 MB to 225 MB.
Installing the ThinkPad Configuration program for Windows 98: - 1.Start Windows 98
- Extract the drivers onto the hard disk.
- Click Start -> Run...
- In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\UTILITY\SETUP.EXE to install the utility program. Click OK to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
Installing the display driver for Windows 98: - Start Windows 98.
- Extract the drivers to the hard drive.
- Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
- Double-click the Display icon. The Display Properties window will appear.
- Click the Setting tab.
- Click the Advanced... button.
- Click the Adapter tab.
- Click the Change... button. The Update Device Driver Wizard dialog window will appear.
- Click on the Next> button.
- Select the Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want. and click the Next button.
- Click the Have Disk... button. The Install From Disk window will appear.
- In the 'Copy manufacturing file's from:' box, type in C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY\ and click the OK button. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead. The Select a device list will appears.
- Confirm 'NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV' is selected in the 'Models:' field and click the OK button.
- If the 'Update Driver Warning' window appears, click the Yes button.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Finish button.
- Click the Close button.
- Select color depth and resolution.
- Click the Close button in Display Properties dialog.
- Windows 98 prompts you to restart the computer to make the display driver change effective.
Installing the audio device driver for Windows 98: - Start Windows 98.
- Extract the drivers onto the hard drive.
- Click Start -> Run.
- Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the driver files and press Enter. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO\.
- Click the Uninstall Crystal Driver button at the pop-up window, and then select Shut Down. Re-start Windows 98.
- When Windows 98 detects "Unknown Device", select Next button. It will default to "Search for best driver for your device", click the Next button. This window should have search "Specify a location" checked.
- Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO\ Then click the Next button. The audio driver list appears. It will then identify the device as a "Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC" with the location of the driver set to "CWDAUDIO.INF", click the Next button. It will begin copying files. When coping completes, click the Finish button. Windows 98 will now detect the PCI Multimedia Audio device.
- Click the Next button. It will default to "Search for best driver for your device", click the Next button. This window should have search "Specify a location" checked
- Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO\. Then click the Next button. The audio driver list appears. It will then identify the device as a "Crystal SoundFusion(TM) PCI Audio Accelerator" with the location of the driver set to "CWCAUDIO.INF", click the Next button.
- When copying completes, click the FINISH button.
Installing the IBM TrackPoint driver for Windows 98 Notes: Before installing this driver, you must uninstall the current program. Uninstalling the driver: - Start Windows 98.
- Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
- Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
- Click the Install/Uninstall tab at the top of the "Add/Remove Programs Properties" window.
- Click IBM TrackPoint Support in the list.
- Click the Add/Remove... button.
- Restart Windows.
Installing the driver: - Start Windows 98
- Extract the driver onto the hard drive.
- Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
- Double-click the System icon.
- Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the "System Properties" window.
- Double-click the Mouse.
- Double-click either PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port or PS/2 TrackPoint whichever choice appears in the list.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click the Update Driver... button. The "Update Device Driver Wizard" runs.
- Click the Next button.
- Click Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want.
- Click the Next button.
- Click Have Disk button.
- Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TPOINT\. Then click the OK button. Then driver list appears.
- Click PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Finish button in the "Update Device Driver Wizard" window.
- Restart your computer to make the new settings effective.
Installing the ThinkPad Modem Software for Windows 98 The modem function of your computer is supported by a digital signal processor (DSP) called the IBM Advanced Communications Processor. You must install the ThinkPad Modem driver for Windows 98 to use the modem function.
To install the ThinkPad Modem driver for Windows 98: - Start Windows 98.
- Extract the ACP Modem drivers onto the hard drive.
- Click Start -> Run.
- Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you unpacked the driver files and press Enter. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\MODEM\ .
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
NOTE: You need to set the dialing properties when using the ThinkPad Modem functions. Click Start -> Seetings -> Control Panel, then double-click the Modems icon. Click the Dialing Properties button. For IRQ-sharing information, refer to Sharing an IRQ between ThinkPad Modem Devices.
