This document contains instructions for installing Microsoft Windows 2000 onto a system with a blank hard disk drive.

You will require the following device drivers to ensure that the system works properly. Click the package name to download the driver.

NOTES:

1. These drivers depend upon hardware installed in the system.
2. This driver has to be installed prior to attaching the unit to the ThinkPad Dock

Preparing your ThinkPad computer for Windows 2000
Make sure the BIOS on your ThinkPad computer is the latest

Installing Windows 2000

1. Insert a bootable diskette into the floppy drive and power on the computer. The boot diskette needs to contain the DOS CD-ROM drivers to access the CD-ROM drive to install Windows 2000.
2. Insert the Windows 2000 CD into the CD-ROM Drive.
3. From the command prompt, type X:\I386\winnt.exe (where X represents the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive), and press the Enter key to start the Windows 2000 installation.
4. The setup process will begin copying files to the hard disk drive. After this process has been completed, remove the disk from the floppy drive and press the Enter key to restart the system. After the Windows 2000 setup screen loads, press the Enter key to start the Windows 2000 Setup Wizard.
5. Read the Licensing Agreement for Windows 2000. If you accept the terms that are displayed, press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement and continue with the installation process.
6. When asked where you want to install Windows 2000, press the Enter key to accept the default drive (C:).
7. When asked if you want to convert your file system to NTFS, click No, don't upgrade. (You can convert the file system after you successfully install Windows 2000.) The following actions will occur: After files are copied to the hard disk drive, Windows 2000 will restart your computer automatically. After this has been completed, Windows 2000 will restart your computer automatically. The Windows 2000 GUI is displayed and you are prompted to continue the installation
8. Click the Next button to continue the installation process. Setup will now detect and install devices. This will take several minutes to complete.
9. The Regional Settings window will appear. Click the Next button to continue with the installation process.
10. Enter your name and organization on the next screen. Click the Next button when complete.
11. Enter the 25 character Windows 2000 Product Key and then click the Next button to continue.
12. When prompted, enter the Administrator password. When prompted, re-enter the Administrator password for verification.
13. When prompted, enter the required information in the Modem Dialing Information window. Click the Next button when complete.
14. Adjust the date and time settings and select the correct time zone for your location. Click the Next button when complete. Windows 2000 will perform its final tasks. This portion of setup process is processor and hard disk drive intensive and will take some time to complete. The computer will restart automatically. If the system becomes unresponsive during the Save Settings portion of setup, restart the setup process of Windows 2000 after attaching the floppy drive.
15. When prompted, enter the Administrator password.

Installing BIOS Update
NOTES:

• As written on LANClient Control Manager (LCCM) Compatibility and Configuration Guide, remove the Power-on password prior to flashing the BIOS in LCCM environment.
• You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program.
• If your computer is attached to any kind of port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
• If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
• Before using this BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, IBM recommends applying the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887.

1. Print these instructions or display on another computer.
2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
3. Start a supported version of Windows on the target computer.
4. Make a temporary directory (for instance, C:\Temp) on the hard disk drive.
5. Download the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory.
6. Click the Start button, then click Run.
7. In the Open dialogue box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility. (E.g. C:\Temp\filename.exe) Then press the Enter key.
8. Follow the instructions. When completed, the system is automatically turned off.
   
   WARNING: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the computer while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.
   
   After the update has been completed, do the following to make the changes effective.
   
   
9. Make sure there is no diskette in the diskette drive, then turn on the computer.
10. While the Press F1 for IBM BIOS Setup Utility message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
11. Verify the BIOS version and date.
12. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
13. Select Yes.
14. Press the F10 key to save default configuration.
15. Select Yes. The system will restart automatically.

Installing the Embedded Controller Program Service Diskette
NOTES:

• You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the embedded controller program.
• If your computer is attached to any kind of port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  

1. Print these instructions or display on another computer.
2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
3. Start Windows 2000 and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator on the target computer.
4. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
5. Click Start, then click Run.
6. Specify filename with the full path name where you stored the package. Then click the OK button.
7. Follow the instructions.
8. When completed, the computer is automatically turned off.

WARNING: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the computer while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.

After the update has been completed, please refer to the Determining which version is installed section below and follow the steps to confirm the update is correctly applied.

Determining which version is installed
NOTE: Each version of the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility contains the following embedded controller program. The version of embedded controller program can be viewed by invoking IBM BIOS Setup Utility. To enter the IBM BIOS Setup Utility:

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Make sure there is no diskette is inserted in the diskette drive.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. While the "Press F1 for IBM BIOS Setup Utility" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
5. Check "Embedded Controller Version" number.

Installing CD-ROM Driver for DOS

1. Start DOS.
2. Insert the CDROM Driver Diskette into the diskette drive.
3. Type A:UINSTALL and press the Enter key.
4. Select Install IBM ThinkPad CD-ROM Driver for DOS/Windows at the Installation Option Screen.
5. After the installation is complete, remove the diskette from the diskette drive and restart the computer.

Installation Configuration Utility for Windows 2000
NOTE:

• If this package is used for Microsoft Windows 95, Internet Explorer version 4 or later will need to be installed.
• If version 1.14 is installed, uninstall it before installing any newer versions.
• The default installation path and folder were changed from version 1.14. If you already installed the previous version, uninstall it first or change the installation path and folder to the same as before.
• If the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge is on the task tray, the uninstall program will display the message to close PWRMONIT.DLL. If this message appears, right-click the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge on the task bar and click Close.

1. Start Windows 2000, and logon with administrative privilege.
2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
3. Click Start, then click Run.
4. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\UTILITY\SETUP.EXE to install the utility driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing On Screen Display Utility
NOTE: If On Screen Display is already installed on your system, check the version number. In case that the previous version is earlier than 2.24i, you need to install the latest version of the ThinkPad Utility.

1. Start Windows 2000 and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
3. Click Start, then click Run.
4. Type in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ONSCR\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

For the versions without suffix i
The installation program of ThinkPad Utility for Windows 2000 will ask you the place of the directory that this package is extracted to. Then, the installation program will install this package automatically. Please refer to the ThinkPad Utility for Windows 2000 package for the details.

Installing Video Driver
NOTE: Make sure that DirectX8 runtime modules have been installed into the system before installing this driver. DirectX8 runtime modules are available from the Microsoft Web site.

1. Start Windows 2000 and logon with administrative privileges.
2. Extract the video drivers onto the hard disk drive.
3. Click Start, then click Run.
4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\W2K\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
5. At the Welcome window, click the Next button.
6. At the Software License Agreement window, if you agree, click Yes. This will start the installation process.
7. At the Setup Complete window, put a check mark in Yes, I want to restart my computer now, and click the Finish button.
8. Restart the system.
   

Installing Audio Driver

1. Start Windows 2000.
2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
4. Double-click the System Icon. Then click the Hardware tab.
5. Click the Device Manager Tab.
6. If you find "Crystal Sound Fusion(TM) CS4281 WDM Audio", then the audio driver has already been installed. If you find "Multimedia Audio Controller" under the Other Devices, then click the Multimedia Audio Controller to select it and click the Properties button.
7. Click the Driver Tab and then the Update Driver button.
8. Click the Next button twice in the Device Driver Update Wizard Window.
9. Specify the location of the Disk by the path name in the step 2 and click the Next button. If you are asked, specify the location of the Disk in "Copy files from:" list and click the OK button. The file copy starts.
10. After the installation of Crystal SoundFusion(TM) CS4281 WDM Audio, click the Finish button. The system will detect New Hardware.

Installing Power Management driver
For initial installation

1. Start Windows 2000, and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
2. Open Control Panel, then double-click on Add/Remove Hardware icon.
3. Click the Next button, then select Add/Troubleshoot a device.
4. Click the Next button.
5. Select Unknown from the device list; then click the Next button.
6. Click the Finish button, then click the Next button.
7. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device, then click the Next button.
8. Select Specify a location, then click the Next button.
9. Specify the directory name where you extracted this package; then click the OK button.
10. Click the Next button, then click the Finish button.
11. Restart the system.

For update installation - when a previous version is already installed

1. Start Windows 2000, and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
2. Open Control Panel, then double-click the System icon.
3. Select the Hardware tab, then click the Device Manager button.
4. Click View, then select Device by type.
5. Double-click System devices.
6. Double-click IBM PM Device.
7. Select the Driver tab, then click the Update Driver button.
8. Click the Next button.
9. Select Display a list of known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver option.
10. Click the Next button.
11. Click the Have disk buttonbutton.
12. Specify the directory name where you extracted this package; then click the OK button.
13. Select IBM PM Device from Models list; then click the Next button.
14. Click the Next button.
15. Click the Finish button.
16. Close the Wizard window.
17. Select Yes in the System Settings Change message box to restart the system.

Installing Mediamatics DVDExpress video player update
NOTE:

• Before installing, make sure that you have installed the following software:
  • Video Features for Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT4.0
  • Audio Features for Windows 95/98/NT4.0
  • IDE Driver for Windows NT4.0
  • Mediamatics DVD-Video Player for Windows 95/98
• This package cannot be installed without the Mediamatics DVD Express DVD-Video player installed on the system. This package is for upgrade purposes only.

1. Start Microsoft Windows.
2. Extract the package onto your hard disk drive.
3. Click Start, then click Run.
4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\DVD\SETUP.EXE to install the upgrade DVD player. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
5. At the Welcome screen, click the Next button.
6. If you agree to the license agreement, click the Yes button.
7. To install to the default directory, click the Next button. It will uninstall the previous player, and then install the updated player.
8. At the setup is complete window, click the Finish button.

NOTE: Depending on your specific machine type you will also need one or two of the drivers below:

Installing Ethernet Mini PCI Combo Driver (3Com)

1. If this is the first time the card has been installed an Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box for the PCI Ethernet Controller will appear. Press the Cancel button. If previous installation exists skip to step 2.
2. Run setup.exe in 'lansetup directory. NOTE: This will uninstall any previous installations.
3. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now. selection checked and press the Finish button on the Reboot dialog screen.
4. Allow the system to reboot. If you need to insert the Ethernet card, turn off the power and do it now.
5. Press the Next button in the Found New Hardware Wizard Dialog.
6. Press the Next button with Search for a suitable driver.... radio button selected.
7. Select Specify a Location and press the Next button.
8. Enter C:\winnt\options\cabs in the dialog and press the OK button.
9. Press the Next button on the dialog that has found the driver c:\winnt\options\cabs\net556n5.inf
10. Press the Finish button The network adapter is now installed.

NOTE:* If you upgraded to Windows 2000 fromaWindows 95/98 installation you will need to enter c:\windows\options\cabs instead.

DOS driver for unattended installation
For customers who need unattended installation, the DOS driver (EL556.dos) is included in landisk4\NDIS2 sub-directory in this package. The DOS driver can be used only for this purpose.

Installing Ethernet Mini PCI Combo Driver (Intel)

1. Right-click the My Computer icon.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the Hardware tab and select Device Manager.
4. Click the + mark on Network Adapter.
5. Double-click Intel(R) PRO/100+ MiniPCI.
6. Click the Driver tab.
7. Click the Update Driver button.
8. Click the Next button.
9. Click the Next button.
10. Specify the directory where the drivers are extracted, click the Next button, and then follow the instructions displayed on the screen.

Intel(R) PRO/100+ Mini PCI
The name of the Ethernet device driver isIntel(R) PRO/100+ Mini PCI in the Device Manager and in the Network Control Panel.

DOS driver for unattended installation:
For customers who need unattended installation, the DOS driver (E100B.DOS) is included in DOS sub-directory in this package. Unattended installation instructions are also included in PUSH sub-directory. The DOS driver can be used only for this purpose.

Installing Modem Driver for Mini-PCI Combo card (3Com)

1. Start Windows 2000 and logon with administrative privileges.
2. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk drive.
3. Click Start, then click Run.
4. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W2K\MODEM\MDMSETUP\SETUP.EXE and click the OK button. If you extracted the files to a different location specify that location instead.
5. Click the Next button at the Welcome dialog screen.
6. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now selection checked and click the Finish button at the Setup Complete dialog screen.
7. Allow the system to reboot. If you need to install the modem card, turn off the power to the system and install the Mini-PCI Combo card.
8. Click the Next button in the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog.
9. Click the Next button with Search for a suitable driver radio button selected.
10. Select Specify a Location and click the Next button.
11. Enter D:\winnt\options\cabs in the dialog box and click the OK button.
12. Click the Next button at the dialog that has found the driver c:\winnt\options\cabs\wdhaibf.inf.
13. Click the Finish button. The modem is now installed.

Installing Modem Driver for Xircom Mini-PCI Combo card (Intel)

1. Start Windows 2000 and logon with administrative privileges.
2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
3. Click Start, then click Run.
4. Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package in the step 2, and click the OK button.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
6. Restart the system for the driver to be effective.

Installing Modem Driver for Lucent Mini-PCI card

1. Start Windows 2000 and logon with administrative privileges
2. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
3. Click Start, then click Run.
4. Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package in the step 2 (Example: C:\DRIVERS\W2K\MODEM\SETUP.EXE), and click the OK button.
5. Follow the instructions. When the message window that says Digital Signature Not Found, click the Yes button.

Installing CMD Ultra DMA IDE Driver

1. Boot the system without the ThinkPad Docked and logged-on with administrator rights.
2. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
4. Double-click System icon.
5. Click the Hardware tab, and click the Device Manager button.
6. On the menu bar of Device Manager, ensure Devices by Type is selected
7. Click the plus next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
8. Double-click Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller or CMD PCI-0648 Ultra DMA IDE Controller. The properties window should appear.
9. Click the Driver tab and click Update Driver.
10. Click the Next button and select Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver.
11. Click the Have disk button, and change the location to the updated drivers. The default location is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IDE\WIN2K.
12. Ensure the INF file Win2000 finds is CMDIDE.INF (not MSHDC.INF). If Win2000 recommends MSHDC.INF, select Install one of the other drivers and click the Next button.
13. Windows 2000 will display a list of available CMD PCI-IDE controllers, select CMD PCI-0648 Ultra DMA IDE Controller from this list and continue with default options.

Tune the driver under Windows 2000
Applications such as DVDExpress and Easy CD Creator require the UltraBay drive to be setup in DMA transfer mode, but the UltraBay drive within the ThinkPad Dock is setup in PIO transfer mode by default. To change transfer mode of the drive:

1. Boot the system with ThinkPad Dock and logged-on with administrator rights.
2. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click System icon.
4. Click the Hardware tab, and click the Device Manager button.
5. On the menu bar of Device Manager, ensure Devices by Type is selected
6. Click the plus next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
7. Double-click CMD PCI-0648 Ultra DMA IDE Controller.
8. Double-click the second Primary IDE Channel.
9. Click the Advanced Settings tab.
10. Click the down arrow at the Transfer Mode in the Device 0 and select DMA if available.
11. Close all windows and restart the system.

Installing Windows 2000 Supplement Files
Applying IBM LCD Color Profile

1. Start Windows 2000.
2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
3. Right-click the desktop to open Display Properties.
4. Click the Settings tab.
5. Click Advanced.
6. Click the Monitor tab, then Properties.
7. Click the Driver tab, then Update Driver. The Upgrade Device Driver Wizard starts.
8. Click the Next button.
9. Select Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver.
10. Click the Next button.
11. Click the Have disk button.
12. Click Browse, and search the location where the file IBMTPLCD.INF exits.
13. Click the Open button.
14. Click IBMTPLCD.INF and then click the OK button.
15. Click the Next button.
16. Click the Next button at start device driver installation wizard.
17. Click the Finish button.
18. Click the Close button.

Installing TrackPoint drivers

1. Start Windows 2000 and logon with administrative privileges.
2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
4. Double-click the System icon.
5. Click the Hardware tab at the top of the System Properties window.
6. Click the Device Manager button.
7. Double-click Mice and other pointing devices.
8. Double-click either IBM PS/2 TrackPoint or PS/2 Compatible Mouse whichever choice appears in the list.
9. Click the Driver tab.
10. Click the Update Driver button. The Update Device Driver Wizard runs.
11. Click the Next button.
12. Click Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver.
13. Click the Next button.
14. Click the Have disk buttonbutton and specify the directory where the driver files are extracted, the default location is C:\DRIVERS\W2K\TPOINT.
15. Click the OK button. Then driver list appears.
16. Click IBM PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
17. Click the Next button.
18. Click the Next button.
19. If you see the warning panel which asks if you want to replace the keyboard port driver(s) or not, click the Yes button.
20. Click the Finish button in the Update Device Driver Wizard window.
21. Click the Close button in the IBM PS/2 TrackPoint Properties window.
22. Restart your computer to make the new settings effective.

Installing Access ThinkPad Application
NOTES:

• Before installing the Access ThinkPad package, you must download and install the ThinkPad Configuration Utility for Windows 95/98/Me/2000 or Windows NT.
• Also required is the ThinkPad Hot Key Utility.
• The above steps are needed to activate the "ThinkPad" button. This button will launch Access ThinkPad if it is available on your system.

Installation instructions

1. Start Windows 2000, logon with administrative privileges.
2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive. The default Extract directory is C:\DRIVERS\ATP_PKG
3. Change to this directory and execute SETUP.EXE.
4. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
