You need to install the following device drivers after you install Microsoft Windows® 98 Second Edition to ensure proper operation of your system. Click the package name to download the software: NOTE: (1) Install only if your system is equipped with this device. Installing Windows 98 NOTE: - Even if you are installing Windows 98 on a drive other than the C drive, more than 25 MB is required on the C drive.
- To use the CD-ROM drive to install Windows 98, create the Startup Disk for Windows 98, which enables you to use the CD-ROM drive, then boot the system with the diskette.
To create the Startup Disk for Windows 98, perform the following steps: - Insert a blank diskette into the diskette drive.
- Click Start, select Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
- Click the Startup Disk tab.
- Click the Create Disk button.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
NOTE: Depending on the optional applications you install with Windows 98, your required disk space varies. The following information applies to installing Windows 98 in your computer: To perform a full installation on a FAT 16 drive: About 225 MB disk space is required. Depending on your system configuration and the options you select, the required space ranges from 165 MB to 355 MB. Full installation on a FAT 32 drive: About 175 MB disk space is required. Depending on your system configuration and the options you select, the required space ranges from 140 MB to 225 MB.
To install Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), perform the following steps: - Copy all the cabinet files and installation programs in Windows 98 retail CD-ROM to your hard disk drive as follows:
- Make a temporary directory (for instance, C:\WIN98) and make sure enough hard disk space is available to store the cabinet files and installation programs (the required free space varies depending on the language of Windows 98).
- Type the following to copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and installation programs from the \WIN98 directory of Windows 98 CD: COPY src_cd:\WIN98\*.* destination and press Enter. (Where src_CD is the drive letter of CD-ROM drive (e.g. D, E,..) and destination is the drive letter and temporary directory made in step 1-a (e.g. C:\WIN98)).
- Copy the updated INF files from the Windows 98 supplement file diskette to the temporary directory:
- Insert the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette into a floppy drive.
- From a command prompt, type in the following and press enter: COPY A:\W98SE\*.* destination (where destination is the drive letter and temporary directory made in step 1-a (e.g. C:\WIN98)).T
- Start Installation from the temporary directory
- Type C:\[temp directory]\Setup.exe C:\[temp directory]\APMINST.INF in the temporary directory, (where [temp directory] is the directory where the Windows 98 installation files and the supplemental diskette files were copied to on the hard disk drive).
- Refer to the Windows 98 documentation and instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
- Apply APM2APM.reg information onto Windows 98:
- Start Windows 98.
- Insert the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette into the floppy drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- Type A:\APM2APM\APM2APM.reg and click the OK button. The following Registry Editor's windows will appear:

- Click the Yes button. A successful windows message will appear.
- Click the OK button to exit the registry editor screen.
- Apply the IBM LCD Color Profile:
- Insert the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette into the floppy drive.
- Click Start, select Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Display icon.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Click the Monitor tab.
- Click the Change button.
- Click the Have Disk button.
- In the Copy manufacturer's files from: field, type A:IBMLCD and click the OK button.
- From the list of resolutions, select the resolution for your system.
- Click the Apply button.
- Click the OK button to close the adapter properties window.
- Click the OK button to close the Display Properties window.
Installing the display driver - Start Windows 98.
- Extract the Video Features for Windows 98 onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE to install the video driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
- When the Welcome window appears, click the Next button.
- At the Software license Agreement screen, if you agree, click Yes.
- At the Setup Complete window, Click Yes, I want to restart my computer now.
- Click the Finish button to reboot the system.
Installing the audio driver - Copy the files to a directory on the hard disk drive and extract it.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- Specify the installation program CrySetup.exe with the full path you extracted the files to in step 1 and click OK.
- Click Uninstall. The program will popup "Crystal Audio was successfully uninstalled." Click OK.
- Click Exit and return to Windows 98.
- Right-click My Computer, select Properties, click the Device Manager tab, then click Other devices. If you see PCI Multimedia Audio has yellow bang ('!') select it and click the Remove button. Click OK on the confirmation popup.
- Restart the system manually.
- The "Add New Hardware" Wizard will start. Click the Next button.
- Follow the instruction on the panels and select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended). Then click Next.
- Select the Specify Location check box when it appears and give the correct path to the driver. Continue following the installation wizard panels. During the installation, you'll be required to insert the Windows 98 SE CD to complete the installation of the WDM driver. It will continue to install the Crystal WDM Audio Codec.
- Click the Finish button when the installation is complete.
- Restart the system manually if you don't see the speaker icon on the system tray.
Installing the TrackPoint driver - Start Windows 98.
- Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, select Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the System icon.
- Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the System Properties window.
- Double-click Mouse.
- Double-click either PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port or PS/2 TrackPoint, whichever choice appears in the list.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click the Update Driver... button. The Update Device Driver Wizard will run.
- Click the Next button.
- Click Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want.
- Click the Next button.
- Click Have Disk.
- Specify the directory where you extracted the driver files. The Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TPOINT\. Then, click the OK button. Then the driver list appears.
- Click PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Finish button in the "Update Device Driver Wizard" window.
- Restart your computer to activate the new settings.
Installing the Configuration utility NOTE: - The default installation path and folder were changed from version 1.14. If you already installed the previous version, uninstall it first or change the installation path and folder to the same as before.
- If the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge is on the task tray, the uninstall program will display the message to close PWRMONIT.DLL. If this message appears, right-click the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge on the task bar and click Close.
- The following additional packages maybe needed: Personalization Editor Data Diskette (if personalization is supported)
- Start Windows 98.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\UTILITY\SETUP.EXE to install the utility driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
Installing the OnScreen Display utility - Start Windows 98.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ONSCR\SETUP.EXE in the Open field and click the OK button.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
Installing the Lucent modem drivers - Start Windows 98.
- Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package in step 2, and click OK.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- After the driver has been installed, restart the system before attempting to use the modem.
Installing the 3Com modem drivers - With the system powered off, install the modem PCI card if necessary.
- Start Windows 98.
- Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive. This will make two directories: MDMSETUP (Modem Setup and Application Software) and MDMDISK2 (Modem Vxd Driver).
- Click Start, then click Run.
- In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9x\MODEM\MDMSETUP\SETUP.EXE to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
- Press the Next button on the Welcome dialog box.
- Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now check box selected and click the Finish button at the Setup Complete dialog box. The system will restart.
- Press the OK button at the Insert Disk dialog box.
- At the second Insert Disk dialog box, in the Copy files from: field, type C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS and click the OK button.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to complete modem installation.
Installing the Intel modem drivers - Start Windows 98.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package in the step 2, and click OK.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Restart the system for the driver to be effective.
