Installing Windows Me and its device drivers - ThinkPad A21e (2655)

To install Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) and its software on your computer, do as follows:

You need to install the following device drivers after you install Windows Me to ensure proper operation of your system. Click the package name to download the software:

Package Name
ThinkPad Configuration program
ThinkPad OnScreen Display utility
Display driver
Audio device driver
TrackPoint driver
Modem driver (1)
Intel/Xircom Mini PCI Combo card (1)
3COM Mini-PCI Combo card (1)
Windows Me Supplement package

NOTE: (1) Install only if your system is equipped with it.

Installing Windows Me

  1. Insert a Windows Me or Microsoft Windows 98 Startup diskette.
  2. Turn system on.
  3. Insert the Windows Me compact disc (CD) in the CD or DVD drive of your computer.
  4. Make a temporary directory. At the DOS prompt, type the following: MD c:\winMe where winMe is whatever name you want to assign to the temporary directory.
  5. Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and installation programs from the Windows Me CD to the temporary directory. At the DOS prompt, type the following: COPY scr_cd:\win9x c:\winMe where scr_CD is the letter of the CD or DVD drive of your computer, and c:\winMe is the temporary directory that you made in step 2.
  6. Run SETUP.EXE. At the DOS prompt, type the following c:\winMe\setup.

Solving Swap function in ACPI mode

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract the Windows Me supplement package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Open the Windows Explorer.
  4. Find C:\DRIVERS\WME\SUPP\ACPI\APM2ACPI.REG file, and double click it. Then the following Registry Editor's message will appear. Are you sure you want to add the information C:\DRIVERS\WME\SUPP\ACPI\APM2ACPI.REG to the registry?
  5. Click Yes. Successful windows message will be displayed.
  6. Click the OK button to exit the registry editor, and reboot the system.

Applying IBM LCD Color Profile

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract the Windows Me supplement package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click right button on desktop to open Display Properties .
  4. Click the Settings tab.
  5. Click the Advanced button.
  6. Click the Monitor tab, then click the Change button.
  7. Click the Have Disk button.
  8. Specify the location where the file IBMTPLCD.INF is located and then click the OK button.
  9. Select IBMTPLCD.INF.
  10. Select one panel in the list you are using now.
  11. Click the Apply button.
  12. Select Color management tab to make sure IBMTPLCD is loaded.

Installing video driver

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract the Video feature driver onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE to install the video driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify the location instead.
  5. Select ATI Easy Install.
  6. When the Welcome window appears, click the Next button.
  7. At the Software License Agreement screen, if you agree, click Yes.
  8. Click Express Install.
  9. If the Digital Signature Notification window appears, follow these steps:
    1. Click the Advanced button.
    2. Select Warn when installing unsigned devices and click the OK button.
    3. Click the Yes button.
    4. Click the OK button.
  10. At Setup complete screen, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now and click Finish.

Installing audio driver

  1. Copy the files to a directory on the hard disk drive and extract it.
  2. Click Start, then click Run.
  3. Specify the installation program CrySetup.exe with full path you extracted the files to in step 1 and click OK.
  4. Click Uninstall. A message will pop up stating that Crystal Audio was successfully uninstalled. Click OK.
  5. Click Exit and return to Windows Me.
  6. Right click My Computer, click Properties, click the Device Manager tab, then click Other devices. If you see PCI Multimedia Audio has yellow exclamation (!) mark, select it and click the Remove button.
  7. Click OK to confirmation popup and restart the system manually.
  8. Add New Hardware Wizard will start. Click the Next button.
  9. Follow the instruction on the panels and select Specify the location of the driver(Advanced). Click Next.
  10. Check Search for the best driver for your device(Recommended) and check Specify a Location check box and give the correct path to the driver. Continue to follow installation wizard panels. It will continue to install the Crystal WDM Audio Codec.
  11. Click Finish when the installation complete.
  12. Restart the system manually if you don't see the speaker icon on system tray.

Installing TrackPoint driver
NOTE: Before installing this driver, you must uninstall the current program.

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon.
  5. Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the System Properties window.
  6. Double-click Mouse.
  7. Double-click either PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port or PS/2 TrackPoint whichever choice appears in the list.
  8. Click the Driver tab.
  9. Click the Update Driver button. The Update Device Driver Wizard runs.
  10. Click Specify the location of the driver (Advanced).
  11. Click the Next button.
  12. Click Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want.
  13. Click the Next button.
  14. Click the Have Disk button.
  15. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Then click the OK button. Then driver list appears.
  16. Click IBM PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
  17. Click the Next button.
  18. Click the Finish button in the Update Device Driver Wizard window.
  19. Close the IBM PS/2 TrackPoint Properties window.
  20. Close the System Properties window.
  21. Restart your computer to make the new settings active.

Installing Configuration utility
NOTE:

  • If version 1.14 is installed, uninstall it before installing any newer versions.
  • The default installation path and folder were changed from version 1.14. If you already installed the previous version, uninstall it first or change the installation path and folder to the same as before.
  • If the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge is on the task tray, the uninstall program will display the message to close PWRMONIT.DLL. If this message appears, right-click on the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge on the task bar and click Close.
  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\UTILITY\SETUP.EXE to install the utility driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing OnScreen Display utility

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ONSCR\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing Lucent modem driver

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package in the step 2, and click OK.
  5. Follow the instructions If the message window that says Digital Signature Not Found, click Yes button.

Installing 3Com modem driver

  1. With the power removed, install the modem if necessary.
  2. Start Windows Me.
  3. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk drive. This will make two directories: \3Com\MDMSETUP (Modem Setup and Application Software) and \3Com\MDMDISK5 (Modem WDM Driver)
  4. Click Start, then click Run.
  5. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9x\MODEM\MDMSETUP\SETUP.EXE to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  6. Click the Next button on the Welcome dialog screen.
  7. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now box checked and click the Finish button at the Setup Complete dialog screen. The system will restart.
  8. Click the OK button at the Insert Disk dialog screen.
  9. At the second Insert disk dialog screen, in the Copy files from: field, type c:\windows\options\cabs and click the OK button.
  10. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete modem installation.

Installing Intel modem driver

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Click the Start button, then click Run.
  3. Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you unpacked Intel(R) PRO/100 SP Mobile Combo Adapter Software for Windows Me driver files and press Enter.
  4. Follow the instructions. If you see the message Digital Signature Not Found, please click OK to continue installing.
