Installing Windows 2000 and its device drivers - ThinkPad A21e (2655)

This document contains instructions for installing Microsoft Windows 2000 onto a system with a blank hard disk drive.

You need to install the following device drivers after you install Windows 2000 to ensure proper operation of your system. Click the package name to download the software:

NOTE: (1) Install only if your system is equipped with it.

Installing Windows 2000 Professional
NOTE: At the end of this installation it will be necessary to install the device drivers and to reinstall your applications so that they will work under Windows 2000.

  1. Insert the Windows 2000 compact disc (CD) in the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Turn off your IBM ThinkPad computer.
  3. Restart your computer. NOTE: The prompt for starting the computer from the CD-ROM drive is displayed briefly. Watch the screen carefully after you restart the computer.
  4. When the "Press any key to boot from the CD-ROM drive" prompt is displayed, press a key to start your computer with the Windows 2000 disc.
  5. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press the Enter key.
  6. Read the Licensing Agreement for Windows 2000. If you accept the terms, press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement and continue with the installation process.
  7. When asked where you want to install Windows 2000, press the Enter key to accept the default drive.
  8. If you are installing Windows 2000 over an existing operating system. Select Leave the current file system intact (No change) and then press the Enter key. NOTE: The computer automatically restarts.
  9. The Regional Settings window is displayed. Click the Next button to continue the installation process.
  10. Type your name and organization. Click the Next button.
  11. Type the 25-character Windows 2000 Product Key; then click the Next button.
  12. When prompted, type the Administrator password. (You do not have to type any password, if you do not want to set an Administrator password. Press the Enter key twice, and then proceed to step 15.)
  13. Click the Next button.
  14. When prompted, reenter the Administration password for verification, if applicable.
  15. Adjust the date and time settings and select the correct time zone for your location.
  16. Click the Next button. Windows 2000 installs components and performs its final tasks.
  17. Click the Finish button on the Windows 2000 set up completion screen. The computer restarts.
  18. At the "Welcome to the Network Identification Wizard" screen, click the Next button.
  19. Enter the appropriate user login; then click the Next button.
  20. Click the Finish button to complete the Network Identification Wizard.

Applying IBM LCD Color Profile

  1. Start Windows 2000.
  2. Extract Windows 2000 supplement package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click right button on desktop to open Display Properties.
  4. Click the Settings tab.
  5. Click Advanced.
  6. Click the Monitor tab, then Properties .
  7. Click the Driver tab, then the Update Driver button. Upgrade Device Driver Wizard starts.
  8. Click the Next button.
  9. Select Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver.
  10. Click the Next button.
  11. Click the Have Disk button.
  12. Click the Browse button, and search the location where the file IBMTPLCD.INF exits.
  13. Click the Open button.
  14. Click IBMTPLCD.INF and then click the OK button.
  15. Click the Next button.
  16. Click the Next button at start device driver installation wizard.
  17. Click the Finish button.
  18. Click the Close button.

Installing display driver

  1. Start Windows 2000 and logon with administrative privileges.
  2. Extract the video drivers onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\W2K\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE to install the video driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. At the Welcome window click the Next button.
  6. At the Software License Agreement window, if you agree, click Yes. This will start the installation process.
  7. At the Setup Complete window, put a check mark in Yes, I want to restart my computer now, and click the Finish button.
  8. Restart the system.

Installing audio driver
NOTE: Disable the driver before update as described below. It is to avoid the blue screen error during driver update.

  1. Start Windows 2000. If using Windows 2000, logon with administrative privileges.
  2. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
  3. Right-click the My Computer icon, then click Manage. Computer Management window will appear.
  4. Click Device Manager, then click Sound, video and game controllers.
  5. Double-click Crystal WDM Audio Codec and then Action then Disable. A warning window appears to confirm disabling this device.
  6. Click Yes.
  7. From the Device Manager window, click Sound, video and game controllers.
  8. Double-click Crystal WDM Audio Codec.
  9. Click Update Driver. Update Device Driver Wizard will appear.
  10. Click the Next button.
  11. Select Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver.
  12. Click the Next button.
  13. Click Have Disk.
  14. Browse or type the directory to where the new driver is.
  15. Click OK.
  16. Click the Next button. You'll see the following warning popup message: "Installing this device driver is not recommended because Windows cannot verify that it is compatible with your hardware. If the driver is not compatible, your hardware will not work correctly and your computer might become unstable or stop working completely. Do you want to continue installing this driver?"
  17. Click Yes. The wizard is ready to install the driver for following hardware device: Crystal WDM Audio Codec
  18. Click the Next button.
  19. If you are downgrading to an old driver you'll see the following Confirm File Replace popup during the installation: "The target file exists and is newer than the source. Overwrite this file?"
  20. Click Yes. If you are upgrading to newer driver you will not see the above message.
  21. To complete the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard, click the Finish button.
  22. From the device manager window, click Sound, video and game controllers.
  23. Click Crystal WDM Audio Codec.
  24. Click Action then Enable.
  25. Shutdown and Reboot the system.

Installing TrackPoint driver

  1. Start Windows 2000 and log on with administrative privileges.
  2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon.
  5. Click the Hardware tab at the top of the System Properties window.
  6. Click the Device Manager button.
  7. Double-click Mice and other pointing devices.
  8. Double-click either IBM PS/2 TrackPoint or PS/2 Compatible Mouse whichever choice appears in the list.
  9. Click the Driver tab.
  10. Click the Update Driver button. The Update Device Driver Wizard runs.
  11. Click the Next button.
  12. Click Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver.
  13. Click the Next button.
  14. Click the Have Disk button and specify the directory where the driver files are extracted, the default location is C:\DRIVERS\W2K\TPOINT.
  15. Click the OK button. Then driver list appears.
  16. Click IBM PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
  17. Click the Next button.
  18. Click the Next button.
  19. If you see the warning panel which asks if you want to replace the keyboard port driver(s) or not, click Yes.
  20. Click the Finish button in the Update Device Driver Wizard window.
  21. Click the Close button in the IBM PS/2 TrackPoint Properties window.
  22. Restart your computer to make the new settings effective.

Installing configuration utility
NOTE:

  • If version 1.14 is installed, uninstall it before installing any newer versions.
  • The default installation path and folder were changed from version 1.14. If you already installed the previous version, uninstall it first or change the installation path and folder to the same as before.
  • If the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge is on the task tray, the uninstall program will display the message to close PWRMONIT.DLL. If this message appears, right-click the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge on the task bar and click Close.
  1. Start Windows 2000, log on with administrative privilege.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\UTILITY\SETUP.EXE to install the utility driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing OnScreen Display utility

  1. Start Windows 2000 and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ONSCR\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing Lucent modem driver

  1. Start Windows 2000 and log on with administrative privileges
  2. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package in the step 2 (Example: C:\DRIVERS\W2K\MODEM\SETUP.EXE), and click OK.
  5. Follow the instructions. When the message window that says Digital Signature Not Found, click the Yes button.

Installing 3Com combo driver

  1. Start Windows 2000 and logon with administrative privileges.
  2. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W2K\MODEM\MDMSETUP\SETUP.EXE and click the OK button. If you extracted the files to a different location specify that location instead.
  5. Click the Next button at the Welcome dialog screen.
  6. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now selection checked and click the Finish button at the Setup Complete dialog screen.
  7. Allow the system to reboot. If you need to install the modem card, turn off the power to the system and install the Mini PCI Combo card.
  8. Click the Next button in the Found New Hardware Wizard Dialog.
  9. Click the Next button with Search for a suitable driver radio button selected.
  10. Select Specify a Location and click the Next button.
  11. Enter D:\winnt\options\cabs in the dialog box and click the OK button.
  12. Click the Next button at the dialog that has found the driver c:\winnt\options\cabs\wdhaibf.inf.
  13. Click the Finish button. The modem is now installed.

Installing Intel PRO/100 SP combo driver

  1. Start Windows 2000 and logon with administrative privileges.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package in the step 2, and click OK.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. Restart the system for the driver to be effective.
