Installing Windows 98 and its device drivers - ThinkPad TransNote

This document contains instructions to install Microsoft Windows® 98 Second Edition.

NOTE: It is recommended that you install the latest drivers and utilities from our site using the following links. However, you can install the drivers that are on the Software Selection compact disc (CD).

You will need each of the files that are listed in the following table. Click the package name to download the files.

Installing Windows 98

  1. Download and create the Supplement diskette.
  2. Start the system in DOS mode.
  3. Insert the Windows 98 CD into the external CD-ROM drive of your computer.
  4. Make a temporary directory.
    For example, at the DOS prompt, type the following: MD c:\win98
  5. Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and installation programs from the Windows 98 CD-ROM to this directory.

    At the DOS prompt, type the following: XCOPY src_cd:\WIN98 c:\win98 /S

    where src_CD is the letter of the CD-ROM drive of your computer, and c:\win98 is the temporary directory that you made in step 2.

  6. Insert the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette into a floppy drive.
  7. From a command prompt, type in the following and press enter: COPY A:\W98SE\*.* destination Where destination is the drive letter and temporary directory made in step 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN98)
  8. Run Setup.exe C:\Win98\APMINST.INF in the temporary directory. Refer to the Windows 98 documentation and instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

Installing APM2APM

  1. Boot the system
  2. Open start menu and click Run. The Run window is open.
  3. Type C:\W98SUPP\APM2APM\APM2APM.reg and click OK. Following Registry Editor's windows appears.
    Are you sure you want to add the information
    C:\W98SUPP\apm2apm\apm2apm.reg to the registery?
  4. Select Yes. Successful windows message is displayed.
  5. Select OK to exit the registry editor screen.

Apply IBM LCD Color Profile

  1. Click right button on desktop to open Display Properties tab.
  2. Select the Settings tab.
  3. Click Advanced.
  4. Select the Monitor tab and Change.
  5. Click Have Disk.
  6. Specify the directory where ibmtplcd.inf and ibmtplcd.icm files exist and then OK.
  7. Select ibmtplcd.inf and then OK.
  8. Select one panel in the list you are using now.
  9. Click Apply.
  10. Select Color Management tab to make sure ibmtplcd.icm file is loaded.

Installing audio drivers

  1. Start Windows.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System Icon.
  5. Click the Device Manager tab.
  6. Click Other Devices, then click the PCI Multimedia Audio Device to select it and click the Properties button.
  7. Click the Driver Tab and then the Update Driver button.
  8. Click Next twice in the Device Driver Update Wizard Window.
  9. Specify the location of the Disk by the path name in the step 2 and click Next. If you are asked, specify the location of the Disk in "Copy files from:" list and click OK. The file copy starts.
  10. After the installation of "Crystal SoundFusion(TM) CS4281 WDM Audio", click Finish. The system will detect New Hardware.

Installing video drivers
NOTE: You must install the video driver and the Touchboard driver and Screen rotation driver in the order given.

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the Video feature driver on the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY\ATISETUP.EXE to install the video driver. Click OK to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Select ATI Easy Install.
  6. When the Welcome window appears, click the Next button.
  7. At the Software License Agreement screen, if you agree click Yes.
  8. Click Express Install.
  9. If the Digital Signature Notification window appears, follow these steps: Click Advanced. Select Warn when installing unsigned devices and click the OK button. Click the Yes button.
  10. Click the OK button.
  11. At Setup complete screen, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now and click the Finish button.

Installing the Touchboard driver

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Click Start, then click Run, and select the browse button.
  3. Search for the subdirectory you extracted the new TouchBoard package.
  4. Select Setup, and then click the Open button
  5. Click OK to start the install
  6. Answer the screens as follows: Next, Yes (for License), Next (for Destination), Next (for Folder), and Finish.

Installing the Screen rotation driver

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\Win\PIVOT\SETUP.EXE to install the pivot driver. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Click the OK button to start the installation process. The Pivot Software Setup dialog box appears.
  6. Click Install. Files will now be copied.
  7. Click Exit.
  8. Click Yes to restart the system.

Installing On Screen Display Utility

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Type in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ONSCR\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing Configuration Utility

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\UTILITY\SETUP.EXE to install the utility driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing FlipTouch Control Utility

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Click Start, then click Run.
  3. Click the Browse button.
  4. Select the folder where FlipTouch Control Utility package is stored.
  5. Select Setup.exe.
  6. Click the Open button.
  7. Click OK Button.
  8. Select language when Choose Setup Language popup panel appears, and press the OK button.
  9. Press the Next button.
  10. Select the path where you want to install FlipTouch Control Utility.
  11. Click the Next button.

Installing Touch Panel driver

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click the Start button, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon.
  5. In the System Properties window, click the Hardware tab.
  6. Double-click Mouse.
  7. Double-click IBM - FlipTouch Display (UPDD).
  8. In the IBM - FlipTouch Display (UPDD) Properties, click the Driver tab.
  9. Click the Update Driver button. The Update Device Driver Wizard appears.
  10. Click the Next button.
  11. Select Search for a better driver than the one your device is using now. (Recommended).
  12. Click the Next button.
  13. Select Specify a location.
  14. Click the Browse button.
  15. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Then, click the OK button.
  16. Click the Next button. Updated files is now being copied.
  17. Click the Finish button.
  18. Click the Yes button to restart the computer.

Installing TrackPoint Driver

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon.
  5. Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the System Properties window.
  6. Double-click Mouse.
  7. Double-click either PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port or PS/2 TrackPoint whichever choice appears in the list.
  8. Click the Driver tab.
  9. Click the Update Driver... button. The Update Device Driver Wizard runs.
  10. Click Next.
  11. Click Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want.
  12. Click Next.
  13. Click Have Disk.
  14. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TPOINT\. Then click the OK button. Then driver list appears.
  15. Click PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
  16. Click Next.
  17. Click Next.
  18. Click Finish in the Update Device Driver Wizard window.
  19. Restart your computer to make the new settings active.

Installing Power Management driver
NOTE: *1 When you see several 'unknown' devices, try the top one first. If the installation does not find the hardware information and does not complete the process, cancel it and try the next one.

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, select Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click Add/Remove Hardware.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Select Unknown Device from the Devices: list. (*1).
  8. Click Next.
  9. Click Finish. Unknown Device Properties comes up.
  10. Click Reinstall Driver button in General Page.
  11. Select Specify the location of the driver [Advanced] option.
  12. Click Next.
  13. Select Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want option.
  14. Click Next.
  15. Select Other devices.
  16. Click Next.
  17. Click Have Disk button.
  18. Specify the directory name where you extracted this package; then click OK. The default location is C:\Drivers\W2k\IBMPM.
  19. Select IBM PM Device from Models list; then click Next.
  20. Click Next.
  21. Click Finish.
  22. Restart the system.

Installing Intel SpeedStep Technology Applet

  1. Start Windows.
  2. Extract the package to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\SPDSTP\SETUP.EXE to install the utility. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing Hibernation Utility

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the hibernation drivers onto the hard disk.
  3. Click Start, then click Run...
  4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\UTILITY\SETUP.EXE to install the hibernation utility program. Click OK to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

NOTE: The following instructions are for options that may be installed in your system. Please verify which component you have and install the appropriate drivers.

Installing Intel(R) PRO/100 Mini PCI Software

  1. Right-click the My Computer icon.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the Device Manager tab.
  4. Click the + mark on the Network Adapter.
  5. Double-click Intel(R) PRO/100+ Mini PCI.
  6. Click the Driver tab.
  7. Click the Update Driver button.
  8. Click the Next button.
  9. Click the Next button.
  10. Specify the directory where the drivers are extracted, click the Next button, and then follow the instructions displayed on the screen.

Installing Modem Driver for Intel/Xircom Mini PCI Combo card

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\MODEM\SETUP.EXE to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. Restart the system for the driver to be effective.

Installing Lucent Modem drivers

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package in the step 2, and click OK.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. After the driver has been installed, shutdown and restart the system before attempting to use the modem.

Installing 3Com 10/100 Ethernet Mini PCI Adapter with 56k Modem

  1. If this is the first time the card has been installed an Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box for the PCI Ethernet Controller will appear. Press the Cancel button. If previous installation exists skip to step 2 .
  2. Run setup.exe in lansetup directory. NOTE: this will uninstall any previous installations.
  3. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now selection checked and press the Finish button.
  4. Allow the system to reboot. If you need to add the Ethernet card, turn off the machine, add the card, and boot up the machine.
  5. Press the Next button on the Add New Hardware Wizard dialog screen.
  6. Leave the Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended) radio button selected and press the Next button again.
  7. Make sure that Specify a location is the only check box checked. Enter c:\windows\options\cabs into the Specify a location: box and press the Next button.
  8. Press the Next button again, then the Finish button on the next screen.
  9. Follow the Microsoft instructions for installing the LAN support files.

Installing Modem Driver for 3COM Mini-PCI Combo card

  1. With the system powered off, insert the modem PCI card if necessary.
  2. Start Windows 98SE.
  3. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive. This will make two directories
    MDMSETUP (Modem Setup and Application Software) and
    MDMDISK2 (Modem Vxd Driver)
  4. Click Start, then click Run.
  5. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9x\MODEM\MDMSETUP\SETUP.EXE to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  6. Press the Next button on the Welcome dialog screen.
  7. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now box checked and press the Finish button at the Setup Complete dialog screen. The system will restart.
  8. Press the OK button at the Insert Disk dialog screen.
  9. At the second Insert disk dialog screen, in the Copy files from: field, type c:\windows\options\cabs and press the OK button.
  10. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete modem installation.

Installing Intel Priority Packet Software

  1. Start Windows.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Specify the installation program SETUP.EXE with full path you extracted in the step 2 and click OK.
  5. Follow instructions on the screen.
