This document contains instructions for installing Microsoft Windows Me onto a system with a blank hard disk drive. You will require the following device drivers to ensure that the system works properly. Click the package name to download the driver. Preparing your ThinkPad computer for Windows Me - Make sure the BIOS on your ThinkPad computer is the latest.
Click here to see the considerations for operating Windows Me on your ThinkPad computer. Installing Windows Me - Boot the Machine using a Microsoft Windows 98 boot disk.
- At command prompt change to the CD-ROM drive and insert the Windows Me CD.
- At the DOS command, enter Setup.
- Press the Enter key (Now setup scans your hard disk drive for errors).
- At the Welcome to Windows Me Setup screen, click the Next button.
- At the License Agreement screen, click I accept the agreement and then click the Next button.
- At the Windows Product Key screen, enter the CD key and click the Next button.
- At select directory screen, click the Next button (Let windows install in the recommended directory).
- At Setup Option, Select Portable and click the Next button.
- At User Information, type in Name and Company and click the Next button.
- At Windows Component, Select the default (Install the most common components) and click the Next button.
- At Network Identification, Enter Computer Name, Workgroup, Computer Description and click the Next button.
- At Country/Region, Select your country from the list and click the Next button.
- At Establish your Time Zone, Select your time zone from the list and click the Next button.
- At Insert Disk, Insert a blank Floppy disk in the floppy drive and click the OK button. You can skip creating the startup disk by clicking Cancel and continue with the installation procedure from step 17. Startup disk can also be created after Windows Me is installed.
- Remove the disk from the floppy drive and click the OK button.
- At Ready to Begin Copying files, click the Finish button. Setup will copy Windows files to your computer and reboot. When the machine reboots, hardware detection will occur, and once detection is complete, the machine will reboot. Once the machine reboots, the windows setup will setup the hardware and finalize settings and reboot again. Once the machine reboots, a normal windows desktop will be displayed.
Installing the Fast Swap driver - Start Windows Me.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- Specify the SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package in the step 2, and click the OK button. The default location is C:\DRIVERS\WME\FASTSWAP
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
Installing the IBM PM device driver - Start Windows Me.
- Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then select Settings, then click Control Panel
- Double-click the System icon.
- Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the System Properties window.
- Double-click Unknown Device from the device list. Unknown Device Properties comes up.
- Click the Reinstall Driver button in General Page.
- Select Specify the location of the driver [Advanced] option.
- Click the Next button.
- Select Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want option.
- Click the Next button.
- Select Other devices.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Have Disk button.
- Specify the directory name where you extracted this package; then click the OK button. The default location is C:\Drivers\W2k\IBMPM.
- Select IBM PM Device from Models list; then click the Next button.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Finish button.
- Restart the system.
Installing ThinkPad Utility Features - Start Windows 95/98/Me.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\UTILITY\SETUP.EXE to install the utility driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
Installing Video Feature (Mob-M/M1) - Start Windows Me/95/98.
- Extract the Video Features for Windows Me/95/98 onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE to install the video driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
- When the Welcome window appears, click the Next button.
- At the Software license Agreement screen, if you agree, click Yes.
- At the Setup Complete window, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now.
- Click the Finish button, then reboot the system.
Changing the Display Settings - Click Start, then select Settings, then click Control Panel
- Double-click the Display icon.
- Select the Settings tab.
- Change the Colors to True Color (32 bit).
- Click the Apply button.
- Select Apply the new color settings without restarting and click the OK button.
- Click the OK button on the Display properties message box.
- Select Yes to keep the new settings.
- Click the OK button to close the display properties box.
Installing the audio drivers - Start Windows Me.
- Extract the Audio Features onto hard disk drive.
- Click Start.
- Click Run.
- Specify the installation program SETUP.EXE with full path you extracted in the step 2 and click the OK button.
- Click the Uninstall Crystal Driver button at the pop-up window, and then select Restart. Re-start Windows Me.
- When the Add New Hardware Wizard detects PCI Multimedia Audio Device, select Specify the location of the driver(Advanced) and click the Next button. It will default to Search for best driver for your device, check Specify a location and press the Browse button. Specify the path name in the step 2. Press the Next button. It will then identify the device as a Crystal SoundFusion(tm) press the Next button. It will begin copying files. Press the Finish button when it complete.
Notes: - If you are not required to restart the system and audio doesn't seems to be functioned(no speaker icon or SoundFusion(tm) icon on systray, no sound, etc..), restart the system manually.
- After the installation, you should find the following drivers installed under Sound,Video,and game controllers in Device Manager.
- Crystal SoundFusion(tm)
- Crystal SoundFusion(tm) WDM Interface
- After the installation, check under the MIDI tab of the Multimedia Properties in the Control Panel. Please select your preference for the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth or the SoundFusion HW Wavetable Synth. The SoundFusion HW Wavetable Synth requires less CPU utilization.
- Right-click the Speaker icon on task bar.
- Select Adjust Audio Properties
- Select Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth or SoundFusion HW Wavetable Synth in Single instrument.
- Click Apply or OK to apply the selection.
Installing the IBM PS/2 TrackPoint driver - Start Windows Me.
- Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then select Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the System icon.
- Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the System Properties window.
- Double-click Mouse.
- Double-click either PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port or PS/2 TrackPoint whichever choice appears in the list.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click the Update Driver button. The Update Device Driver Wizard runs.
- Click Specify the location of the driver (Advanced).
- Click the Next button.
- Click Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Have Disk button.
- Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Then click the OK button. Then driver list appears.
- Click IBM PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Finish button in the Update Device Driver Wizard window.
- Close the IBM PS/2 TrackPoint Properties window.
- Close the System Properties window.
- Restart your computer to make the new settings effective.
Upgrading Audio drivers - Turn on your computer and logon to Windows Me.
- Click Start, then select Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System icon and click Device Manager tab.
- Click + Sound, Video and Game Controller to expand the devices
- Double-click Crystal SoundFusion(Tm)PCI Audio Accelerator to open its property panel.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click the Update Driver button.
- Click Specify the location of the driver (Advanced).
- Click the Next button to continue
- Click Display list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want.
- Select Crystal Sound Fusion 6/8/2000.
- Click the Next button to continue.
- Click the Next button again. New Hardware Found wizard will be detected and will install the necessary devices
- Click the Finish button to finish upgrade process
Installing Intel SpeedStep Technology Applet - Start Windows Me.
- Extract the package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\SPDSTP\SETUP.EXE to install the utility. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
Installing DVD Player update Notes: - This driver can only be used on the supported ThinkPad computers listed above.
- Before installing, make sure that you have installed the following software in the computer:
- Video Features for Windows 95/98/Me/NT4/2000
- Audio Features for Windows 95/98/Me/NT4/2000
- This package cannot be installed without the DVD-Video player installed in the system. This package is for upgrade purpose only.
Installing original Mediamatics DVDExpress - Start Windows Me.
- Insert Software Selection CD.
- Select Mediamatics DVDExpress, then click Install.
- Click the OK button to continue installation.
- Reboot system when done.
Installing the upgrade - Start Microsoft Windows Me.
- Extract the package onto your hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run...
- In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\DVD\SETUP.EXE to install the upgrade DVD player. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
- At the Welcome screen, click the Next button.
- If you agree to the license agreement, click the Yes button.
- To install to the default directory, click the Next button. It will uninstall the previous player, and then install the updated player.
- At the setup is complete window, click the Finish button.
Installing Intel Combo driver - Start Windows Me.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\WME\MODEM\SETUP.EXE to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
- Follow the instructions on the screen. If you see the message ' Digital Signature Not Found ', click the OK button to continue installing.
- Restart the system for the driver to be effective.
Installing Intel Pro/100 Mini PCI software - Right-click the My Computer icon.
- Click Properties.
- Click the Device Manager tab.
- Click the + mark on the Network Adapter.
- Double-click Intel(R) PRO/100+ MiniPCI.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click the Update Driver button.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Next button.
- Specify the directory where the drivers are extracted, click the Next button, and then follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
Installing Intel Priority packet - Start Windows.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then click Run.
- Specify the installation program SETUP.EXE with full path you extracted in the step 2 and click the OK button.
- Follow instructions on the screen.
Installing 3Com Combo driver - With the power removed, install the modem if necessary.
- Start Windows Me.
- Extract the drivers onto the hard disk drive. This will make two directories: \3Com\MDMSETUP (Modem Setup and Application Software) and \3Com\MDMDISK5 (Modem WDM Driver)
- Click Start, then click Run.
- In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9x\MODEM\MDMSETUP\SETUP.EXE to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
- Click the Next button on the Welcome dialog screen.
- Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now. box checked and click the Finish button at the "Setup Complete" dialog screen. The system will restart.
- Click the OK button at the Insert Disk dialog screen.
- At the second Insert disk dialog screen, in the Copy files from: field, type c:\windows\options\cabs and click the OK button.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to complete modem installation.
Installing IBM 3Com 10/100 Ethernet Mini-PCI Adapter with 56k Modem - When the system detects Ethernet or Modem, click Cancel.
- Run setup.exe in lansetup directory.
- Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now selection checked and press the Finish button. Allow the system to reboot. If you need to add the Ethernet card, turn off the machine, add the card, and boot up the machine.
- Press the OK button on the Insert Disk dialog screen.
- In the New Hardware Found dialog box Enter c:\windows\options\cabs into the Copy files from: box and press the OK button.
- Follow Microsoft instructions for loading the Windows networking files.
Installing ThinkPad Dock driver Note: Install this driver before Docking. - Run Setup.exe in the WinMe folder of the driver set. CMD PCI IDE Driver Setup Utility Window appears. 'Preparing files for PCI-64X Bus Master IDE driver' 'Shutdown the system and install the PCI-64X IDE Controller'
- Press the OK button, then the system re-boots.
- Shutdown the system.
- Dock the system.
- Power-on the system.
