Installing Windows Me and its device drivers on a blank hard disk drive - ThinkPad X20

This document contains instructions for installing Microsoft Windows Millennium (Me) onto a system with a blank hard disk drive.

You will require the following device drivers to ensure that the system works properly. Click the package name to download the drivers.

Preparing your ThinkPad system for Windows Me

  1. Make sure the BIOS on your ThinkPad system is the latest.

Installing Windows Me

  1. Boot the Machine using a Microsoft Windows 98 boot disk.
  2. At command prompt change to the CD-ROM drive and insert the Windows Me compact disc (CD).
  3. At the DOS command, enter Setup.
  4. Press Enter (Now setup scans your Hard disk for errors).
  5. At the Welcome to Windows Me Setup screen, click the Next button.
  6. At the License Agreement screen, click I accept the agreement and then click the Next button.
  7. At the Windows Product Key screen, enter the CD key and click the Next button.
  8. At select directory screen, click the Next button (Let windows install in the recommended directory).
  9. At Setup Option, Select Portable and click the Next button.
  10. At User Information, type in Name and Company and click the Next button.
  11. At Windows Component, Select the default (Install the most common components) and click the Next button.
  12. At Network Identification, Enter Computer Name, Workgroup, Computer Description and click the Next button.
  13. At Country/Region, Select your country from the list and click the Next button.
  14. At Establish your Time Zone, Select your time zone from the list and click the Next button.
  15. At Insert Disk, Insert a blank Floppy disk in the floppy drive and click the OK button. You can skip creating the startup disk by clicking Cancel and continue with the installation procedure from step 17. Startup disk can also be created after Windows Me is installed.
  16. Remove the disk from the floppy drive and click the OK button.
  17. At Ready to Begin Copying files, click the Finish button. Setup will copy Windows files to your computer and reboot. When the machine reboots, hardware detection will occur, and once detection is complete, the machine will reboot. Once the machine reboots, the windows setup will setup the hardware and finalize settings and reboot again. Once the machine reboots, a normal windows desktop will be displayed.

Installing APM2ACPI.Reg

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract the Windows Me Supplement package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Open field, type C:\driverS\WME\SUPP\ACPI\APM2ACPI.REG file, and press the Enter key. Then the following Registry Editor's message will appear. "Are you sure you want to add the information C:\drivers\WIN\SUPP\ACPI\APM2ACPI.REG to the registry?"
  5. Click the Yes button. A message saying the file was successfully added will be displayed.
  6. Click the OK button to exit the registry editor.
  7. Reboot the system.

Installing ThinkPad Utility Features

  1. Start Windows 95/98/Me.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Open field, type C:\drivers\W9X\UTILITY\SETUP.EXE to install the utility driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing Video Feature (Mob-M/M1)

  1. Start Windows Me/95/98.
  2. Extract the Video Features for Windows Me/95/98 to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\drivers\W9X\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE to install the video driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. When the Welcome window appears, click the Next button.
  6. At the Software license Agreement screen, if you agree, click the Yes button.
  7. At the Setup Complete window, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now.
  8. Click the Finish button, then reboot the system.

Changing the Display Settings

  1. Click Start, then select Settings, click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Display icon.
  3. Select the Settings tab.
  4. Change the Colors to True Color (32 bit).
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Select Apply the new color settings without restarting and click the OK button.
  7. Click the OK button on the Display properties message box.
  8. Select the Yes button to keep the new settings.
  9. Click the OK button to close the display properties box.

Installing the IBM PS/2 TrackPoint driver

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then select Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon.
  5. Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the System Properties window.
  6. Double-click the Mouse.
  7. Double-click either PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port or PS/2 TrackPoint whichever choice appears in the list.
  8. Click the Driver tab.
  9. Click the Update driver button. The Update Device driver Wizard runs.
  10. Click Specify the location of the driver (Advanced).
  11. Click the Next button.
  12. Click Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want.
  13. Click the Next button.
  14. Click Have Disk.
  15. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Then click the OK button. Then driver list appears.
  16. Click IBM PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
  17. Click the Next button.
  18. Click the Finish button in the Update Device driver Wizard window.
  19. Close the IBM PS/2 TrackPoint Properties window.
  20. Close the System Properties window.
  21. Restart your computer to make the new settings effective.

Installing Audio drivers

  1. Start Windows.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System Icon.
  5. Click the Device Manager tab.
  6. If you find Crystal Sound Fusion(TM) CS4281 WDM Audio, then the audio driver has already been installed.
  7. If you find PCI Multimedia Audio Device under the Other Devices, then click the PCI Multimedia Audio Device to select it and click the Properties button.
  8. Click Driver Tab and then Update driver button.
  9. Click the Next button twice in the Device driver Update Wizard Window.
  10. Specify the location of the Disk by the path name in the step 2 and click the Next button. If you are asked, specify the location of the Disk in Copy files from: list and click the OK button. The file copy starts.
  11. After the installation of Crystal SoundFusion(tm) CS4281 WDM Audio, click the Finish button. The system will detect New Hardware.

Installing the Fast Swap driver

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Specify the SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package in the step 2, and click the OK button . The default location is C:\drivers\WME\FASTSWAP
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen

Installing the IBM PM device driver

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon.
  5. Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the System Properties window.
  6. Double-click the Unknown Device from the device list. Unknown Device Properties comes up.
  7. Click Reinstall driver button in General Page.
  8. Select Specify the location of the driver [Advanced] option.
  9. Click the Next button.
  10. Select Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want option.
  11. Click the Next button.
  12. Select Other devices.
  13. Click the Next button.
  14. Click the Have Disk button.
  15. Specify the directory name where you extracted this package; then click the OK button. The default location is C:\drivers\W2k\IBMPM.
  16. Select IBM PM Device from Models list; then click the Next button.
  17. Click the Next button.
  18. Click the Finish button.
  19. Restart the system.

Installing Intel SpeedStep Technology Applet

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract the package to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\drivers\WIN\SPDSTP\SETUP.EXE to install the utility. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing Intel/Xircom Mini PCI Combo card driver

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Open field, type C:\drivers\WME\MODEM\SETUP.EXE to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen. If you see the message ' Digital Signature Not Found ', click the OK button to continue installing.
  6. Restart the system for the driver to be effective.

Installing 3Com driver

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract the 3Com 10/100 Mini PCI Ethernet Adapter drivers on your hard disk drive.
  3. Shutdown the system.
  4. With the Power cord removed install the Combo card.
  5. Start Windows Me.
  6. When the setup detects PCI Ethernet controller select Specify the location of the driver [Advanced] option.
  7. Click the Next button.
  8. Select Specify a location and type in C:\drivers\win\Ethernet\Landisk2.
  9. Click the Next button.
  10. Click the Next button to install the 3Com 10/100 Mini PCI Ethernet Adapter.
  11. Click the OK button on ACPI screen.
  12. Click the Finish button.
  13. Click the Yes button to “Restart the system”.
  14. After the system reboots click cancel when the system detects the Modem.
  15. Extract the modem drivers on the hard disk drive. This will make two directories: \Modem\MDMSETUP (Modem Setup and Application Software) and \Modem\MDMDISK5 (Modem WDM driver).
  16. Click Start, then Click Run.
  17. In the Open field, type C:\drivers\WME\MODEM\MDMSETUP\Setup.exe to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you have extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  18. Click the Next button at the Welcome dialog screen.
  19. Leave the “Yes, I want to restart my computer now.” box checked and click the Finish button at the Setup complete dialog screen. The system will restart.
  20. After the system reboots it will detects PCI Communication Device select Specify the location of the driver [Advanced] option. Click the Next button.
  21. Select Specify a location and type in C:\drivers\WME\Modem\MDMDISK5.
  22. Click the Next button.
  23. Click the Next button to install the 3Com Mini PCI 56K Modem Communications Port.
  24. Click the Finish button.
  25. When the setup detects Modem Device select Specify the location of the driver [Advanced] option. Click the Next button.
  26. Select Specify a location and type in C:\drivers\WME\Modem\MDMDISK5.
  27. Click the Next button.
  28. Click the Next button to install the 3Com Mini PCI 56K Modem.
  29. Click the Finish button.
