Upgrading to Windows Me from Windows 98 - ThinkPad 1200, 1300

This document contains instructions for installing Microsoft Windows Me onto a system with Microsoft Windows 98 installed on it.

You need to install the following drivers to ensure proper operation of your system. Click the package name to download the file.

Preparing your ThinkPad computer for Windows Me

  1. Make sure the BIOS on your ThinkPad computer is the latest.

Upgrading to Windows Me

  1. Turn on your computer and login to the current Windows operating system with an internal or external CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive installed.
  2. Insert the Windows Me compact disc (CD) into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. If Windows automatically detects the CD, select Yes to upgrade your system. Otherwise do the following:
    1. Click Start, then click Run...
    2. Type D:\Setup in the 'Open' field, where the letter D is the drive letter designation for your computer's CD or DVD-ROM drive.
    3. Press Enter.
  3. At the Welcome to Windows Me Setup screen, click the Next button.
  4. At the License Agreement screen, click I accept the agreement and then click the Next button.
  5. At the Windows Product Key screen, enter the CD key and click the Next button. Setup now collects information of your system.
  6. At save system files screen select Yes and click the Next button.
  7. At Insert Disk, Insert a blank Floppy disk in the floppy drive and click the OK button. You can skip creating the startup disk by clicking Cancel and continue with the installation procedure from step 9. Startup disk can also be created after Windows Me is installed.
  8. After setup had finished making the startup disk. Remove the disk from the floppy drive and click the OK button.
  9. At Ready to Begin Copying files, click the Finish button. Setup will copy Windows files to your computer and reboot. When the machine reboots, hardware detection will occur, and once detection is complete, the machine will reboot. Once the machine reboots, the windows setup will setup the hardware and finalize settings and reboot again. Once the machine reboots, a normal windows desktop will be displayed.

Installing Notebook Manager II for Windows Me
NOTE:
You must remove the existing version of Notebook Manager before installing the newer version.

Removing existing Notebook Manager

  1. Click Start, then select Settings, then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. Select Notebook Manager, and click the Add/Remove button.
  4. Click the OK button to close the Add/Remove Programs window.

Installing Notebook Manager

  1. Start Windows 98/Me.
  2. Extract the NoteBook Manager package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Type in C:\DRIVERS\W9x\NBUTIL\setup.exe in the Open box and click the OK button.
  5. Click the Next button to continue with the setup program.
  6. Follow the procedure to complete the installation.

Installing Sleep Manager for Windows Me

  1. Start Windows 98/Me.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Type in C:\DRIVERS\W9X\SLEEP\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
  5. Click the Next button to continue with the setup program.
  6. If Read Only File Detected window appears, click the Yes button.
  7. Follow the procedure to complete the installation.

Installing Easy Launch Button for Windows Me

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon
  5. Click the Device Manager tab.
  6. Find the keyboard icon and double click it.
  7. Select the Driver tab.
  8. Click the Update Driver button.
  9. Choose Display a list of all the drivers in a specific locaton, so you can select the driver you want.
  10. Click the Next buttonbutton.
  11. Choose the Have Disk button.
  12. Guide the wizard to Standard(101/102) keyboard with IBM Easy Launch buttons.
  13. Follow the operation of IBM Easy Launch buttons setup.

Installing the Display Driver

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Type in C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. Restart the system for the driver to take effect

Changing the Display Settings

  1. Click Start, then select Settings, then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Display icon.
  3. Select the Settings tab.
  4. Change the Screen Area to 1024*768 pixels.
  5. Change the Colors to True Color (24 bit).
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Select Apply the new color settings without restarting and click the OK button.
  8. Click the OK button on the Display properties message box.
  9. Select Yes to keep the new settings.
  10. Click the OK button to close the display properties box.

Installing the IBM PS/2 TrackPoint Driver

  1. Start Windows ME.
  2. Extract the driver onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then select Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon.
  5. Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the System Properties window.
  6. Double-click Mouse.
  7. Double-click either PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port or PS/2 TrackPoint whichever choice appears in the list.
  8. Click the Driver tab.
  9. Click the Update Driver... button. The Update Device Driver Wizard runs.
  10. Click Specify the location of the driver (Advanced).
  11. Click the Next button.
  12. Click Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want.
  13. Click the Next button.
  14. Click the Have Disk button.
  15. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Then click the OK button. Then driver list appears.
  16. Select IBM PS/2 TrackPoint from the list, and click the Next button.
  17. Click the Next button again.
  18. Click the Finish button in the Update Device Driver Wizard window.
  19. Close the IBM PS/2 TrackPoint properties window.
  20. Close the System Properties window.
  21. Restart your computer to make the new settings effective.

Installing Audio Drivers

  1. Start Windows Me
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then select Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon.
  5. Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the system Properties window.
  6. Double-click Sound, video and game controllers in the list.
  7. Click Crystal WDM Audio Codec.
  8. Click Properties button.
  9. Click the Driver tab at the top of the Crystal WDM Audio Codec Properties window.
  10. Click the Update Driver buttonbutton.
  11. Click the Next button on the Update Device Driver Wizard window.
  12. Click Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want.
  13. Click the Next button.
  14. Click the Have Disk button.
  15. Type in C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO.
  16. Click the OK button.
  17. Click Crystal WDM Audio Codec.
  18. Click the OK button.
  19. If Update Driver Warning message appears, click Yes.
  20. Click the Next button.
  21. Click the Finish button.
  22. Restart the system for the driver to be effective.

Installing Modem Drivers

  1. Start Windows Me.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Type in C:\DRIVERS\W9x\MODEM\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. Restart the system for the driver to take effect

Installing LAN Drivers

  1. Extract the driver onto the hard drive.
  2. Click Start, then select Settings, then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the System icon.
  4. Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the System Properties window.
  5. Double-click the Network Adapter.
  6. Double-click Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter (10/100).
  7. Click the Driver tab.
  8. Click the Update Driver... button. The Update Device Driver Wizard runs.
  9. Click Specify the location of the driver (Advanced), then click the Next button.
  10. Click Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want.
  11. Click the Next button.
  12. Click the Have Disk button.
  13. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Then click the OK button. Then driver list appears.
  14. Select Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter (10/100) from the list, and click the Next button.
  15. Click the Next button again.
  16. Click the Finish button in the Update Device Driver Wizard window.
  17. Close the Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter (10/100) properties window.
  18. Close the System Properties window.
  19. Restart your computer to make the new settings effective.
