Upgrading to Windows 2000 from Windows 95 - ThinkPad 240X
This document provides instructions to upgrade your Thinkpad 240X with Microsoft Windows 95 to Microsoft Windows 2000.

Preparing your Thinkpad for Windows 2000
  1. Make sure the BIOS on your ThinkPad is the latest.
  2. Remove Norton Antivirus from the system.
Removing Norton Antivirus
  1. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel .
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs .
  3. Select Norton Antivirus , click Add/Remove button.
  4. Select LiveUpdate , click Add/Remove button.
  5. Click OK to close Add/Remove Programs.

Video driver for Windows 2000

Installing Windows 2000
  1. Flash the ThinkPad BIOS to most current available.
  2. Recover IBM Thinkpad windows 95 preload for best results.
  3. Use whatever means required to copy windows 2000 I386 source code onto the ThinkPad hard disk drive.
  4. Click Start -> Run... Type X:\I386\Winnt32 to begin the windows 2000 install (Where X:\ is the drive where the windows 2000 source code is located)
  5. The Windows 2000 Setup Wizard. Click Upgrade to begin the install. Click Next to continue.
  6. Click Accept the license agreement , then click Next to continue.
  7. Enter the 25 character product key, and click Next to continue.
  8. Read all the information on the Preparing to upgrade screen and click Next to continue when ready.
  9. Windows 2000 will perform a hardware check, click Next when prompted

Updating Infrared driver

  1. Start Windows 2000. Logon with Administrative access.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start -> Run.
  4. Type in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\SUPP\FIR\WIN2K\FIRPATCH.EXE in the Open box and click OK.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. Reboot the system for the driver to be effective.

Installing ThinkPad device drivers
Installing video driver

  1. Start Windows 2000 and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start -> Run.
  4. Type in C:\DRIVERS\W2K\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. Restart the system for the driver to be effective.

Installing audio driver

  1. Start Windows 2000 and logon with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
  2. Extract this package to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  4. Double click the System icon.
  5. Click the Hardware tab, then the Device Manager button.
  6. Double click Sound, video and game controllers.
  7. Double click Crystal SoundFusion(tm) CS4281 WDM Audio.
  8. Click the Driver tab.
  9. Click the Update Driver button, then Next.
  10. Select Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver, then click Next.
  11. Click Have Disk.
  12. Type in C:\DRIVERS\W2K\AUDIO in the Copy manufacturer's files from: box, and click OK.
  13. Click Crystal SoundFusion(tm) CS4281 WDM Audio, and click Next.
  14. Make sure the Crystal SoundFusion(tm) CS4281 WDM Audio is selected, and click Next.
  15. Click Finish, then Close.
  16. Follow the instructions, and reboot the system.

Installing modem driver

  1. Start Windows 2000 and logon with the user ID authorized as an administrator.
  2. Extract this package onto the hard drive.
  3. Click Start -> Run.
  4. Type in C:\DRIVERS\W2K\MODEM\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click Next.
  5. Follow the instructions, and restart the system.
