This document describes the installation procedures for Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition and its device drivers. | NOTE: | Installing Windows 98 Second Edition using the Windows 98 Installation CD requires that you attach a CD-ROM drive to your ThinkPad 240X Notebook. For information on obtaining and installing a CD-ROM to your ThinkPad 240X, visit www.pc.ibm.com |

Installation Instructions - Have the Windows 98 installation package in hand. If you do not have a CD-ROM of Windows 98, you can install it by using the Recovery CD. Refer to the User's Reference.
- Connect the external floppy disk drive. Refer to the ThinkPad 240X User's Reference.
- Connect the external CD-ROM drive. Refer to the ThinkPad 240X User's Reference.
- Back up your software and personal data files on the hard disk.
- Install Windows 98 and the software.
You need to install at least the following device drivers if you are restoring your ThinkPad computer to its original state at the time of purchase:
| NOTE: | If you are installing Windows 98 on a drive other than the C drive, more than 25 MB is required on the C drive. | Some new devices for the ThinkPad 240X computer are not supported by the Windows 98 Retail Release Version. In addition, some new files must be incorporated at the time of installation. If you do not have a CD-ROM of Windows 98, you can install it by restoring the original preloaded image from the Recovery CD. Refer to the User's Reference. If you have a CD-ROM version of Windows 98 Second Edition, do the following: - Connect the CD-ROM drive to the ThinkPad 240X. Refer to the ThinkPad 240X User's Reference.
- Connect the floppy disk drive drive to the ThinkPad 240X. Refer to the ThinkPad 240X User's Reference.
- Start your computer in DOS mode.
- Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
- Search for SETUP.EXE in the CD-ROM, and run SETUP.EXE. Type the following: src_cd:\tgt_dir\LANG\ENG\CABS\SETUP.EXE where src_cd is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive and tgt_dir is the directory that SETUP.EXE is in. For more information, refer to the SETUP.TXT in the Windows 98 CD-ROM.
- Press Enter.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
| NOTE: | Depending on the optional applications you install with Windows 98, your required disk space varies. The following information applies to installing only Windows 98 in your computer: Full installation on a FAT 16 drive: About 225 MB disk space is required. Depending on your system configuration and the options you select, the required space ranges from 165 MB to 355 MB. Full installation on a FAT 32 drive: About 175 MB disk space is required. Depending on your system configuration and the options you select, the required space ranges from 140 MB to 225 MB. |
Updating APM Driver - Make the backup copy of Windows 98 Second Edition Boot Disk.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Copy C:\DRIVERS\WIN\SUPP\APMINST\SCRATCH\APMINST.INF file to the backup copy of Windows 98 Second Edition Boot Disk. From now on, use this backup copy as the Windows 98 Second Edition Boot Disk.
- Type E:\>SETUP A:\APMINST.INF to start Windows 98 Second Edition installation; Where, E: is the CD-ROM drive letter for Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM. A: is the diskette drive letter for Windows 98 Second Edition Boot Disk.
- Follow the instruction of Windows 98 Second Edition Install program.
Installing IBM LCD Color Profile support - Start Windows 98 Second Edition.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Display icon.
- Click the Settings tab, and the Advanced button.
- Click the Monitor tab, and the Change button.
- Click Have Disk.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\SUPP\IBMLCD and click OK. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
- Confirm IBM_TP.INF is selected, and click OK.
- Select one panel in the list you are using now, and click Apply.
- Select Color Management tab to make sure IBM_TP.ICM file is loaded.
- Follow the instructions, and reboot the system.
Installing device drivers for Windows 98 Second Edition Installing video driver - Start Windows 98.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then clck Run.
- Type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click the OK button.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Restart the system for the driver to be effective.
Installing audio driver - Start Windows 98.
- Extract this package to the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add New Hardware.
- Click Next, then Next, then Next.
- Select Search for the best driver for your device.
- Click Next.
- Specify the location with full path you extracted the files to in step 2 and click Next.
- The updated driver will be found, then click Next.
- Click Finish.
- Select Yes, I am finished installing devices, then click Next.
- Click Finish, and restart the system. The new setting will take effect after reboot.
Installing modem driver - Start Windows 98.
- If you have not already, extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, then clck Run..
- Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\MODEM\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click Next.
- Follow the instructions, and restart the system.
Installing fast infrared driver - Start Windows 98.
- Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
- Start the Windows Explorer.
- Find nscirda.inf file in the \windows\inf directory and nscirda.sys in the \windows\system directory. Then delete them.
- Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the System icon.
- Click the Device Manager tab.
- Double-click Infrared device, and click Infrared Communication Device.
- Click the Remove button, and click OK. Follow the instructions, and return to the Device Manager.
- Double-click Network adapter device, and click IBM ThinkPad Fast Infrared Port .
- Click the Remove button, and click OK. Follow the instructions, then reboot the system.
- After restarting Windows 98, the New Hardware Found Wizard dialog window will appear. Click Next.
- Select Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location , so you can select the driver you want, and click Next.
- Click the Have Disk button.
- In the Copy manufacturer's files from: box, type C:\DRIVERS\W98\IR and click OK. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
- Follow the instructions and reboot the system.
- Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Network adapters icon.
- Double-click IBM ThinkPad Fast Infrared Port.
- Click Advanced tab.
- Select Vishay 6101E/6501E in the Value list for the Infrared Transceiver A in the Property list. Select Vishay 6101E/6501E in the Value list for the Infrared Transceiver B in the Property list, then click OK.
- Follow the instructions and reboot the system.
