Installing Windows 95 and its device drivers - ThinkPad T20
This document describes the installation procedures for Microsoft Windows 95 for your computer.

Note: You can install Windows 95 by restoring the original preloaded image from the Recovery compact disc (CD). Using the Recovery CD, however, it will first erase your entire hard disk. If you use the recovery CD you should then check the support site for the latest drivers and utilities for your system.

Overall procedure

  • Have the Windows 95 installation package available.
  • Back up your software and personal data files that are on the hard disk to another disk.
  • Install Windows 95. Follow the instructions that come with the installation package.
  • Install device drivers as required.

You need to install the following drivers to ensure proper operation of your system. Click the package name to download the driver.

Installing Microsoft Windows 95 OSR2.X

  1. Copy all the cabinet files and installation programs to your hard disk. Make a temporary directory (for instance, C:\WIN95) and make sure enough hard disk space is available to store the cabinet files and installation programs (the required free space vary depending on the language of Windows 95).
    1. Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and installation programs from the \WIN95 directory of Windows 95 OSR2 CD. Type COPY src_cd:\WIN95\*.* destination and press the Enter key. Where src_CD is the drive letter of CD-ROM drive (e.g. D, E,..) and destination is the drive letter and temporary directory made in step 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN95)
  2. Copy updated files from W95SUPP directory to the temporary directory Put the Windows 95 supplement file diskette into the floppy drive.
    1. From a command prompt, type COPY A:\OSR2INF\*.* destination and press the Enter key.
    2. Type COPY A:\CARDBUS\*.* destination and press the Enter key. Where destination is the drive letter and temporary directory made in step 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN95).
  3. Start Installation from the temporary directory Run SETUP.EXE in the temporary directory Refer to the Windows 95 documentation and instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
  4. Next step is to install some fix modules on Windows 95 OSR2.X.
    1. Install PC Card driver fix Run A:\QFE444\PCCARDUP.EXE. This is found on the Windows 95 supplement diskette.
    2. Reboot the system
  5. The last step is to install OSR 2.X. To install the OSR2.X, refer to its documentation. As for USB Supplement file update, please see \other\usb folder (Windows 95 SR2.1) in your Windows 95 backup CD-ROM.

Installing the ThinkPad device drivers
Installing video driver Start Windows 95. (OSR2.x)

  1. Start Windows 95.
  2. Extract the Video Features for Windows 95 onto hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE to install the video driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing video driver Start Windows 95. (OSR0 and OSR1)
Note:
Since the Setup.exe, InstallShield does not work with Windows 95 OSR0/1 do the following

  1. Start Windows 95.
  2. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon.
  5. Click the Device Manager tab.
  6. Expand Display Adapters.
  7. If there is a S3 only adapter, remove it.
  8. At the Confirm Device Removal window, click the OK button.
  9. At the Restart confirmation message window, click NO.
  10. Expand Other Devices and remove PCI VGA-Compatible Display Adapter.
  11. At the Confirm Device Removal window, click the OK button.
  12. At the PCI VGA-Compatible Display Adapter Has a ROM window, click Test.
  13. Shutdown and restart the system.
  14. When the system starts, the New Hardware Found window appears. Select Driver provided by hardware manufacturer Driver provided by hardware manufacturer and click the OK button.
  15. Specify the directory where the driver files were extracted and click the OK button.
  16. At the System Settings Change window, click YES to restart the system.

Installing audio driver Start Windows 95.

  1. Start Windows 95.
  2. Extract the Audio Features for Windows 95/98 onto hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE to install the audio driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. At the Crystal Audio Setup window, click Uninstall Crystal Drivers. When prompted to Shut Down or Restart your system, click the Restart button.
  6. When Windows restarts, it will detect new hardware and bring up the "Update Device Driver Wizard" (Windows 95). Click the Next button to continue.
  7. At the "Windows will search for new drivers" window, ensure only Other locations... is checked. In the box beneath, type in C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO\. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead. Click the Next button to continue.
  8. Windows will then identify the device as a Crystal SoundFusion(TM) PCI Audio Accelerator with the location of the driver set to CWCAUDIO.INF, click the Next button to continue.
  9. When copying completes, click the Finish button.

Installing Configuration Utility

  1. Start Windows 95.
  2. Extract this package to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\UTILITY\SETUP to install the Configuration Utility. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Note: When prompted for target directory during installation, only a short name can be specified for a target directory, e.g. C:\THINKPAD. Do NOT specify a directory name with spaces, e.g. "C:\IBM ThinkPad\".

Installing TrackPoint driver Start Windows 95.

  1. Start Windows 95.
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then select Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the Mouse icon.
  5. Click the General tab.
  6. Click Change.
  7. Click Have Disk...
  8. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TPOINT\. Then click the OK button. Then driver list appears.
  9. Select PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
  10. Click the OK button.
  11. Click the Close button in the "Mouse Properties" window.
  12. Restart your computer to make the new settings active.

Installing Ultrabay 2000 driver Start Windows 95.

  1. Start Windows 95.
  2. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the Add New Hardware icon.
  5. Click the Next button.
  6. If prompted to search for any new Plug and Play devices, click the Next button.
  7. If asked if the device is the list, select No, the device is not in the list, then click the Next button.
    When asked " Do you want Windows to search for your new hardware? ", select No, I want to select the hardware from a list. and click the Next button.
  8. Scroll through the list of Hardware types and select Other devices.
  9. Click the Next button.
  10. Click the Have Disk... button. The Install from Disk window will appear.
  11. In the "Copy manufacturer's files from:" box, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\BAYSWAP and click the OK button. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  12. Select ThinkPad Ultrabay 2000 Hot/Warm Swap Driver and click the Next button.
  13. Once the driver is installed, click the Finish button.
  14. Restart the system for the changes to take affect.

Installing Intel Speedstep

  1. Start Windows 95.
  2. Extract the package to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\SPDSTP\SETUP.EXE to install the utility. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Modem Drivers
There are three different types of modems that can be used with the ThinkPad T20. You must install the correct driver for the modem to function properly.

Installing the Lucent modemdriver

  1. Start Windows 95.
  2. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\MODEM\SETUP.EXE to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing the 3COM combo card modem driver

  1. With the system powered off, insert the modem PCI card if necessary.
  2. Start Windows 95.
  3. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive. This will make two directories MDMSETUP (Modem Setup and Application Software) and MDMDISK2 (Modem Vxd Driver)
  4. Click Start, then click Run.
  5. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9x\MODEM\MDMSETUP\SETUP.EXE to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  6. Press the Next button on the Welcome dialog screen.
  7. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now. box checked and press the Finish button at the Setup Complete dialog screen. The system will restart.
  8. Press the OK button at the Insert Disk dialog screen.
  9. At the second Insert disk dialog screen, in the Copy files from: field, type c:\windows\options\cab s and press the OK button.
  10. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete modem installation.

Installing the Intel combo card modem driver

  1. With the power removed, Insert the modem if necessary.
  2. Start Windows 95.
  3. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
  4. Click Start, then click Run.
  5. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\MODEM\SETUP.EXE to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the modem installation.

Installing the CMD Ultra DMA driver
Note: Update or install this driver before docking system.

  1. Start Windows 95.
  2. Extract the package to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run.
  4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IDE\Setup.exe. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
