Installing Windows 98 and its device drivers - ThinkPad T20

This document describes the installation procedures for Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition for your computer.

NOTE: You can install Windows 98 by restoring the original preloaded image from the Recovery compact disc (CD). Using the Recovery CD, however, it will first erase your entire hard disk. If you use the recovery CD you should then check the support site for the latest drivers and utilities for your system.

Overall procedure

  • Have the Windows 98 installation package available.
  • Back up your software and personal data files that are on the hard disk to another disk.
  • Install Windows 98. Follow the instructions that come with the installation package.
  • Install device drivers as required.

You need to install the following drivers to ensure proper operation of your system. Click the package name to download the file.

Installing Microsoft Windows 98
NOTES:

  • If you are installing Windows 98 on a drive other than the C drive, more than 25 MB is required on the C drive.
  • To use the CD-ROM drive to install Windows 98, create the Startup Disk for Windows 98, which enables you to use the CD-ROM drive. Then boot the system with the diskette.

Creating the Startup Disk for Windows 98:

  1. Insert a blank diskette into the diskette drive.
  2. Click Start, then select Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  4. Click Startup Disk.
  5. Click Create Disk.
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen.

NOTE: Depending on the optional applications you install with Windows 98, your required disk space varies. The following information applies to installing only Windows 98 in your computer:

  • To perform a full installation on a FAT 16 drive:
    • About 225 MB disk space is required. Depending on your system configuration and the options you select, the required space ranges from 165 MB to 355 MB.
  • Full installation on a FAT 32 drive:
    • About 175 MB disk space is required. Depending on your system configuration and the options you select, the required space ranges from 140 MB to 225 MB.

Installing Windows 98 Second Edition

  1. Ensure that the BIOS on the system is current.
  2. Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.
  3. Make a temporary directory. For example, at the DOS prompt, type the following: MD c:\win98
  4. Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and installation programs from the Windows 98 CD-ROM to this directory.
    1. At the DOS prompt, type the following: COPY src_cd:\WIN98\\.\ c:\win98 where src_CD is the letter of the CD-ROM drive of your computer, and c:\win98 is the temporary directory that you made in step 2.
  5. Run Setup.exe in the temporary directory.
  6. Refer to the Windows 98 documentation and instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

Installing the ThinkPad device drivers
Installing video driver

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the Video Features for Windows 95/98 onto hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run...
  4. In the Run dialog window, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE to install the video driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing audio driver

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the Audio Features for Windows 95/98 onto hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run...
  4. Type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE to install the audio driver.
  5. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  6. Click Uninstall Crystal Drivers at the Crystal Audio Setup window. When prompted to Shut Down or Restart your system, click the Restart button. When Windows restarts, it will detect new hardware and bring up the "Add New Hardware Wizard".
  7. Click the Next button to continue.
  8. Select Search for best driver for your device and click the Next button. At the "Windows will search for new drivers" window, ensure only Specify a location is checked. In the box beneath, type in C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO\. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  9. Click the Next button to continue. Windows will then identify the device as a Crystal SoundFusion(TM) PCI Audio Accelerator with the location of the driver set to CWCAUDIO.INF.
  10. Click the Next button to continue. When copying completes, click the Finish button.

Installing Configuration Utility

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run...
  4. Type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\UTILITY\SETUP in the Run dialog window, to install the utility program.
  5. Click OK to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing TrackPoint driver

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Click Start, then select Settings, then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  4. Click the Install/Uninstall tab at the top of the "Add/Remove Programs Properties" window.
  5. Click IBM TrackPoint Support in the list.
  6. Click the Add/Remove... button.
  7. Restart Windows.

Installing Ultrabay 2000 driver

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then select Settings, then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the Add New Hardware icon.
  5. Click the Next button. If prompted to search for any new Plug and Play devices, click the Next button.
  6. Select No, the device is not in the list when asked if the device is the list, then click the Next button.
  7. Select No, I want to select the hardware from a list and click the Next button.
  8. Scroll through the list of Hardware types and select Other devices.
  9. Click the Next button.
  10. Click the Have Disk... button. The Install from Disk window will appear.
  11. Type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\BAYSWAP in the Copy manufacturer's files from: box, and click the OK button. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  12. Select ThinkPad Ultrabay 2000 Hot/Warm Swap Driver and click the Next button.
  13. Click the Finish button.
  14. Restart the system for the changes to take affect.

Modem Installation
There are three different types of modems available for the ThinkPad T20. You must install the appropriate driver for your modem for it to operate.

Installing the Lucent modem driver

  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive.
  3. Click Start, then click Run...
  4. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\MODEM\SETUP.EXE to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing the Intel modem driver

  1. With the power removed, Insert the modem if necessary.
  2. Start Windows 98.
  3. Click Start, then click Run...
  4. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\MODEM\SETUP.EXE to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the modem installation.

Installing the 3Com modem driver

  1. With the system powered off, insert the modem PCI card if necessary.
  2. Start Windows 98SE/98GOLD.
  3. Extract the drivers to the hard disk drive. This will make two directories MDMSETU P (Modem Setup and Application Software) and MDMDISK2 (Modem Vxd Driver)
  4. Click Start, then click Run...
  5. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\W9x\MODEM\MDMSETUP\SETUP.EXE to install the modem driver. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
  6. Press the Next button on the Welcome dialog screen.
  7. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now. box checked and press the Finish button at the Setup Complete dialog screen. The system will restart.
  8. Press the OK button at the Insert Disk dialog screen.
  9. At the second Insert disk dialog screen, in the Copy files from: field, type c:\windows\options\cab s and press the OK button.
  10. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete modem installation.
