Installing Windows 2000 and its device drivers - ThinkPad R30, R31

This document contains instructions for installing Microsoft Windows 2000. Lenovo provides supplement files, driver files, upgrade patches, and preloaded software on the preload hard drive (HD) that comes with the system. The location of these files on your HD and alternate locations, in cases where your HD is blank, are listed in the table below.

Preparing your ThinkPad computer for Windows 2000
Before removing any software or operating system from your ThinkPad system, you will need to:

  • Make sure the BIOS on your ThinkPad computer is at the latest level.
  • Save any necessary driver, supplement, and software files on removable media. This includes all the subdirectories and files on the preloaded HD in the C:\IBMTOOLS\APPS, C:\IBMTOOLS\OSFIXES\W2KSUPP, C:\IBMTOOLS\OSFIXES\W2KUP, and C:\IBMTOOLS\OSFIXES\WINSUPP directories and the driver files for Windows 2000 listed in the R30/R31 Device Driver File Matrix. This will require from 5 to 100MB of uncompressed space.

Installing Windows 2000

  1. Insert the Windows 2000 compact disc (CD) into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and restart the system. When the "Press any key to boot from the CD-ROM drive" prompt is displayed, press a key to start your computer with the Windows 2000 CD. If the system does not boot to the Windows 2000 CD, then ensure the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive is set as the first bootable device in the BIOS settings.
  2. Press the Enter key at the Welcome to Setup screen to start the Windows 2000 Setup Wizard.
  3. Read the Licensing Agreement for Windows 2000. If you accept the terms that are displayed, press the F8 key to accept the Licensing Agreement and continue with the installation process.
  4. When asked where you want to install Windows 2000, press the Enter key to accept the default drive (C:).
  5. When asked if you want to convert your file system to NTFS, click No, don't upgrade. (You can convert the file system after you successfully install Windows 2000.) The following actions will occur: After files are copied to the hard drive, Windows 2000 will restart your computer automatically. After this has been completed, Windows 2000 will restart your computer automatically. The Windows 2000 GUI is displayed and you are prompted to continue the installation
  6. Click the Next button to continue the installation process. Setup will now detect and install devices. This will take several minutes to complete.
  7. The Regional Settings window will appear. Set appropriately, and then click the Next button to continue with the installation process.
  8. Enter your name and organization on the next screen. Click the Next button when complete.
  9. Enter the 25-character Windows 2000 Product Key and then click the Next button to continue.
  10. When prompted, enter the Administrator password, and then reenter the Administrator password for verification.
  11. When prompted, enter the required information in the Modem Dialing information window. Click the Next button when complete.
  12. Adjust the date and time settings and select the correct time zone for your location. Click the Next button when complete. Windows 2000 will perform its final tasks. This portion of setup process is processor and hard drive intensive and will take some time to complete. The computer will restart automatically. When prompted, enter the Administrator password to start Windows 2000.
    Note: If the system becomes unresponsive during the Save Settings portion of setup, restart the setup process of Windows 2000.
  13. If the original files were saved in the the Preparing your ThinkPad computer for Windows 2000 section, then restore C:\IBMTOOLS\APPS, C:\IBMTOOLS\OSFIXES\W2KSUPP, C:\IBMTOOLS\OSFIXES\W2KUP, and C:\IBMTOOLS\OSFIXES\WINSUPP from the backup copy you made before starting the installation.
  14. Run the Intel chipset software installer. To do this, run infinst_enu.exe in C:\IBMTOOLS\OSFIXES\WINSUPP\INTELINF\ and follow the instructions for the Install shield program.
  15. Install all device driver files that were downloaded in the Preparing your ThinkPad computer for Windows 2000 section by following the installation instructions in the README files.
  16. Install Windows 2000 Service Pack 2. For more information, refer to the installation guide of Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
    Note: If you install any AntiVirus application before installing the service pack, uninstall the AntiVirus application. After installing the service pack, reinstall the AntiVirus application.
  17. Install the Windows 2000 supplement files.


Installing Windows 2000 Supplement Files
The Windows 2000 Supplement Files are in the following directory:
C:\IBMTOOLS\OSFIXES\W2KSUPP
To install the registry file for applying the C3 state profile:

  1. Click Start, then click Run.
  2. Open C3USB2K.reg in the USBPM directory and click OK.
  3. Click Yes.
  4. Click OK.

To install the update for the O2Micro OZ6912 CardBus controller:

  1. Click Start, then click Run.
  2. Open O2UPDATE.exe in the O2Cardbus directory and click OK.
  3. Click OK.

Installing Windows 2000 Update Module Package
The Windows 2000 Update Module is in the following directory:
C:\IBMTOOLS\OSFIXES\W2KUP

Module Q279491
This module is for use if multiple CardBus devices do not share the IRQs.

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type C:\IBMTOOLS\OSFIXES\W2KUP\Q279491_W2K_SP3_x86_en.exe in the open dialog box, and click OK.
  3. After the Hotfix setup finishes, click OK.
  4. Restart the system.

Module Q280430
This module is for use if the Screensaver returns to the desktop in battery mode.

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type C:\IBMTOOLS\OSFIXES\W2KUP\Q280430_W2K_SP3_x86_en.exe in the open dialog box, and click OK.
  3. After the Hotfix setup finishes, click OK.
  4. Restart the system.

Install the application software that was saved in the Preparing your ThinkPad for Windows 2000 section from the C:\IBMTOOLS\APPS directory on your hard drive.
