Installing Windows 98 and its device drivers - ThinkPad 770X
This document describes the installation procedures for Windows 98 and its software for your computer.
Note: You can install Windows 98 by restoring the original preloaded image from the Recovery CD. Refer to the User's Reference for how to use the Recovery CD.
 
Overall Procedure
  1. Have the Windows 98 installation package in hand.
  2. Back up your software and personal data files on the hard disk.
  3. Create the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette using the Diskette Factory preloaded on the hard disk.
  4. Create the diskettes of the device drivers using the Diskette Factory. You need to create at least the following device driver diskettes (see table below). If you have already formatted the hard drive, you can download these drivers by clicking on the links provided.
  5. Install Windows 98 and the software.

Note : For UltraBay II hot swap driver, Windows 95 driver is available for Windows 98.
 
Installing Microsoft Windows 98
If you are installing Windows 98 on a drive other than the C drive, more than 25 MB is required on the C drive.  
  1. Install the Windows 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Search for SETUP.EXE in the CD-ROM, and run the SETUP.EXE . Enter the following: src_cd:\tgt_dir\SETUP.EXE where src_cd is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive (D, E...) and tgt_dir is the directory that SETUP.EXE is in. For more information, refer to the SETUP.TXT in the Windows 98 CD-ROM.
  3. After Windows 98 is installed, insert the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette into the diskette drive.
  4. Click on Start .
  5. Click on Run...
  6. Type A:\PIXX4\APM2APM\APM2APM.REG and click on OK .
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  8. After the installation has finished, remove the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette from the diskette drive and restart the computer.
 
Note : Depending on the optional applications you install with Windows 98, your required disk space varies. The following information applies to installing only Windows 98 in your computer:
 
Full install on a FAT 16 drive:
About 225 MB disk space is required. Depending on your system configuration and the options you select, the required space ranges from 165 MB to 355 MB.
 
Full install on a FAT 32 drive:
About 175 MB disk space is required. Depending on your system configuration and the options you select, the required space ranges from 140 MB to 225 MB.
 
Installing the ThinkPad Configuration Program for Windows 98
To install the ThinkPad Configuration program for Windows 98:
 
 
  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk.
  3. Click on Start -> Run...
  4. Type in " x:\<path name>\SETUP.EXE ". Then click on OK . where x: is the drive letter and <path name> is the path you extracted the files to. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W98\UTILITY\
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
 
Installing the Display Driver for Windows 98
To install the ThinkPad display driver for Windows 98:
  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard drive.
  3. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel .
  4. Open the Display icon.
  5. Click on the Setting tab.
  6. Click on the Advanced... button.
  7. Click on the Adapter tab.
  8. Click on Change.. . button. Then Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box appears.
  9. Click on Next button.
  10. Select Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want .
  11. Click on Next button.
  12. Click on Have Disk... button. Then click on Next button.
  13. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY. Then click on OK button. Then video driver list appears.
  14. Confirm IBM ThinkPad(Cyber9397DVD) or IBM ThinkPad(Cyber9397) is listed in 'Models' field and focus it then click on OK button.
  15. Click on Yes button if 'Update Driver Warning' dialog is appeared.
  16. Click on Next button.
  17. Click on Finish button.
  18. Click on Close button.
  19. Click on Close button in Display Properties dialog.
  20. Windows 98 prompts you to restart the computer to make the display driver change effective.
 
Installing the Audio Device Driver for Windows 98
To install the audio device driver for Windows 98:
  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard drive.
  3. Click on Start -> Run .
  4. Specify the installation program SETUP.EXE with full path you extracted in the step 2 and click on OK . Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO\.
  5. Click on the Uninstall Crystal Driver button at the pop-up window, and then select Shut Down . Re-start Windows 98.
  6. When Windows 98 detects "Unknown Device", select Next button. It will default to "Search for best driver for your device", press the Next button. This window should have search "Specify a location" checked.
  7. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO\ Then click on the Next button. The audio driver list appears. It will then identify the device as a "Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC" with the location of the driver set to "CWDAUDIO.INF", press the Next button. It will begin copying files. When coping completes, press the Finish button.
  8. Windows 98 will now detect the PCI Multimedia Audio device. Push the Next button. It will default to "Search for best driver for your device", press the Next button. This window should have search "Specify a location" checked.
  9. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO\. Then click on the Next button. The audio driver list appears.
  10. It will then identify the device as a "Crystal SoundFusion(TM) PCI Audio Accelerator" with the location of the driver set to "CWCAUDIO.INF", press the Next button.
  11. When copying completes, press the Finish button.
 
Note 1:
After the installation, you should find the following drivers installed under "Sound, Video, and game controllers" in Device Manager:
 
Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC
Crystal PnP Audio System Control Registers
Crystal PnP Audio System Joystick
Crystal PnP Audio System MPU-401 Compatible
Crystal SoundFusion(TM) PCI Audio Accelerator
Crystal SoundFusion(TM) Virtual MPU-401
 
Note 2:
If you experienced boot time error in CONFIG.SYS at "Restart in MS-DOS mode"(file not found error), you need to modify its property as follows.
  1. Open property of c:\Windows\Exit to DOS.pif (EXITTO~1.PIF) file from "My Computer" or Windows Explore.
  2. Click Program tab to access program settings then press Advanced.. . button.
  3. There are two list box in the program settings window. Slide the list down of the upper list box, CONFIG.SYS for MS-DOS Mode:" with its slider.
  4. Confirm there is an entry, "Device=C:\WINDOWS\cwbinit.exe /A" at the bottom of the list.
  5. Move mouse pointer to anywhere in "Device=C:\WINDOWS\cwbinit.exe /A" line, and click left button once.
  6. A cursor appears on that line. Then move cursor with left/right arrow keys to modify "cwbinit" to " cwdinit ".(b -> d)
  7. After this modification has been done, press OK button to exit "Advanced".
  8. Press the OK button to close the property window.
 
Installing the IBM TrackPoint Driver for Windows 98
To install the TrackPoint driver for Windows 98: 
  1. Start Windows 98
  2. Extract the driver onto the hard drive.
  3. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel .
  4. Double-click on the System icon.
  5. Click on the Device Manager tab at the top of the "System Properties" window.
  6. Double-click on the Mouse .
  7. Double-click on either PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port or PS/2 TrackPoint whichever choice appears in the list.
  8. Click on the Driver tab.
  9. Click on the Update Driver... button. The "Update Device Driver Wizard" runs.
  10. Click on Next .
  11. Click on Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want .
  12. Click on Next .
  13. Click on Have Disk .
  14. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TPOINT\. Then click on OK button. Then driver list appears.
  15. Click on PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
  16. Click on Next .
  17. Click on Next .
  18. Click on Finish in the "Update Device Driver Wizard" window.
  19. Restart your computer to make the new settings effective.
 
Installing the ThinkPad Modem Software for Windows 98
The modem function of your computer is supported by a digital signal processor (DSP) called the IBM Advanced Communications Processor. You must install the ThinkPad Modem driver for Windows 98 to use the modem function.
 
To install the ThinkPad Modem driver for Windows 98:
  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the ACP Modem drivers onto the hard drive.
  3. Click on Start -> Run
  4. Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you unpacked the driver files and press Enter Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\MODEM\.
  5. Follow the instructions
 
If the previous version of the driver is installed, the ThinkPad Modem setup program displays a message. Remove the previous version of the driver by using the uninstall tool provided in the ThinkPad DSP program. If the previous version of the driver is not installed, a message saying that Windows has found an unknown device appears. Insert the ThinkPad Modem for Windows 95/98/NT diskette into the diskette drive. Follow the instructions on the screen.
 
Note : You need to set the dialling properties when using the ThinkPad Modem functions. Click on Control Panel, Modems, and then the Dialling Properties button.

Installing the Video Capture Driver for Windows 98
Note:* Use this driver package only for the ThinkPad 770X and 770Z.
* Before installing, make sure that you have installed the following software in the computer:
- Video Features IV v1.32 or later for Windows 95/98
 
To install the video capture driver for Windows:
  1. Start Windows 98.
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk.
  3. Click on Start -> Run...
  4. Type in " x:\path name\SETUP.EXE ". Then click on OK . where x: is the drive letter and path name is the path you extracted the files to. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\CAPTURE\
  5. When prompted, restart the computer.
  6. When system starts, it will enumerate (recognize) a new device (titled "Unknown Device") and asks if you want to install it. This is the IBMVCAP device. Do NOT choose "Cancel," instead following the recommended instruction from the Add New Hardware Wizard, and selecting the directory containing the "ibmvcap.sys" file Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\CAPTURE\
 
<<<WARNING>>>
Please don't use the Add New Hardware Wizard / Applet found in the Control Panel. This method, after installing the driver, will re-enumerate the devices and attempt another installation of the IBMVCAP device.
 
---- DMA setting information ----
 
If you wish to enable high performance capturing, do the following.
  1. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel .
  2. Double click on System and select the Device Manager tab.
  3. Select Disk Drives .
  4. Select GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE .
  5. Click on Properties and select the Settings tab.
  6. Make sure there is a check mark next to DMA.
  7. Select OK .
  8. Close all windows and restart the system.
 
Installing the UltraBay II Hot Swap Driver for Windows 98
 
Note:
If a previous version is already installed, it must be uninstall before installing this update. Use the Add/Remove Program icon in Control panel. Depending on which version of the driver is installed, the driver's name may be different. Please check for both 'Hot Swap Driver' and 'Hot/Warm Swap Driver'.
 
Installing the driver:
  1. Start Windows 98
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard drive.
  3. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  4. Select Add New Hardware from Control Panel.
  5. At the 'Begin installing your new hardware window, Select Next .
  6. At the 'search for new Plug and Play devices' windows, click Next .
  7. At the 'Is the device that you want to install listed below?' window, select No, the device isn't in the list. and click on Next .
  8. When prompted 'Do you want Windows to search for your new hardware?' choose No, I want to select the hardware from a list and click Next .
  9. Under Hardware types, select Other devices and click Next .
  10. At the 'Select the manufacturer' window, click on the Have Disk... button.
  11. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\BAYSWAP\. Then click on OK button. Then driver list appears.
  12. Select ThinkPad UltraBay Hot/Warm Swap Driver and click Next .
  13. Click the Finish button.
  14. Restart the operating system.
