This document contains information to assist you with the installation of Windows NT Workstation version 4.0 on the IBM ThinkPad 770, 770E, 770ED, 770X. These instructions make the following assumptions:
- Internal CDROM Drive with an externally attached floppy disk. If you are going to be installing Windows NT from an external CD-ROM drive click here for instructions.
- No additional hardware connected to the system, i.e. external mouse, keyboard, etc.
- No Network Card connected to the system. ( Can be added later. These instructions do not tell how to setup/configure network cards.)
- That you have Backed up your software and personal data files on the hard disk.
Installing Windows NT 4.0 Workstation 1. Read the Windows NT installation guide. If your computer does not have a CD-ROM drive, using a network server, you can install Windows NT on multiple computers by first copying the Windows NT master source files to a shared drive on a network server. After connecting your computer to a network, for example with the DOS LAN requester, you can install the files from the network server to your computer at the DOS command prompt. For more information, refer to the Windows NT installation guide. Note: If you have an external CD-ROM drive that connects under a DOS environment, you can install Windows NT in DOS. 2.) Boot off the three NT boot diskettes or if you have the internal CDROM driver set to bootable, off the NT CDROM. Note: DO NOT use diskettes made during the installation of NT on another machine! 3.) At the Windows NT Workstation Setup window, you will be given a list of options. To continue with the installation, press Enter . 4.) At the next window, it states that it will automatically detect floppy controllers and hard drives. Press Enter to continue. 5.) It will then say that it has detected the following device: IDE CD-ROM <ATAPI 1.2>/PCI IDE Controller . Press Enter to continue. 6.) 8.) It will then show the existing partitions on your hard drive. Make sure the drive you want to install Windows NT on is highlighted (if you only have one partition then there will only be one drive to select) and press Enter . 9.) It will then prompt you to select the type of file system you want to install on the hard drive. You have the following options: Format the partition using the FAT file system Format the partition using the NTFS file system Convert the partition to NTFS Leave the current file system intact <no changes>
Select one of the options above and press Enter to continue (if you are installing Windows NT on top of your current operating system, then you will want to select one of the last two options. Select NTFS only if your current operating system supports NTFS, which Windows 95 and 98 do not). If you selected one of the first two options, it will warn you that formatting your hard drive will erase all data on your hard drive. If you wish to continue, press F to format the hard drive. If you selected to convert the partition to NTFS it will give you a warning that the drive will be inaccessible to any operating system other than Windows NT. If you wish to continue press C . 10.) If you selected to format the partition, you will be prompted for the installation location after the formatting has completed. To accept the default location, press Enter. If you chose to convert the partition to NTFS, the installation will continue and the conversion will take place on the first boot of Windows NT. 11.) It will then say that it will examine your hard drive. Press Enter to continue. After it has examined your hard drive (it may take several minutes) it will begin copying files to the hard drive. 12.)
