This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS program stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

This release supports the following system:
- ThinkPad R40 model 2722, 2723, 2724, 2897

The supported operating systems are as follows:
- Microsoft Windows 98
- Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition(*1)
- Microsoft Windows 2000
- Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6 or later
- Microsoft Windows XP

Notes:
- *1: Before using the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, Lenovo recommends that you apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web Site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887.
- Verify the Emedded Controller version and update as necessary prior to updating the BIOS. See link below.

Installation instructions
Notes:
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program.
  • If your system is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the system and detach it before proceeding.
  • Before using this BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, Lenovo recommends applying the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887.
  1. Print these instructions or display on another system.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the system.
  3. Start a supported version of Windows on the target system.
  4. Make the temporary directory on the hard drive (for instance, C:\Temp)
  5. Download the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory.
  6. Click Start and then click Run.
  7. In the Open dialog box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility. (For example: C:\Temp\1PUJ21US.EXE) Then press the Enter key.
  8. Follow the instructions. Windows will shut down automatically and the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen will appear.
    Note: Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear on the screen. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2. Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again."
  9. When completed, the system is automatically turned off.

    Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the system until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the system while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.

    After the update has been completed, do the following to make the changes effective.
  10. Make sure there is no diskette in the diskette drive, then turn on the system.
  11. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button message is displayed at the lower-left of the screen, press the Access IBM button.
  12. Select Start setup utility. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the password. Verify the BIOS version and date.
Unattended install
  1. Do the same instructions above from step 1 to step 6.
  2. Specify filename with the full path name where you stored ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility with options -s -a -s. (E.g. C:\Temp\1PUJ21US.EXE -s -a -s) Then press the Enter key. Windows will shutdown automatically and the system BIOS program will be updated without any user interaction.
BIOS information
Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following system program (BIOS). The BIOS Version and the date can be viewed by running ThinkPad Configurator from your operating system and selecting the System Information button or by invoking the BIOS Setup Utility.
  1. Make sure there is no diskette in the diskette drive, then turn off the system.
  2. Turn on the system.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button message is displayed at the lower-left of the screen, press the Access IBM button.
  4. Select Start setup utility. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enters the password. The BIOS version and date are displayed on the first screen of the BIOS Setup Utility.

The following information shows memory areas that are either unavailable or that can be included with a memory manager such as EMM386.
Reserved BIOS Area:
  • C0000-CFFFF (reserved for Video BIOS)
  • D0000-D3FFF (reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet)
  • DC000-DFFFF (reserved for USB BIOS) *1
  • E0000-FFFFF (reserved for BIOS)

Note: (*1) This area is free when USB BIOS is disabled.
