ThinkPad 802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI Adapter may not work after updating BIOS - ThinkPad R50, R50e, R51, T40/p, T41/p, T42/p, X31

If an ThinkPad 802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI Adapter is installed, when the BIOS is at certain versions, the wireless adapter is unable to connect to any Access Point. The user may also observe:

  • An error message appears when Fn and F5 keys are pressed to turn on or off the wireless LAN.
  • A yellow exclamation point appears on the ThinkPad 802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI Adapter device in the Device Manager.

Affected configuration
Any of the following ThinkPad systems with an ThinkPad 802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI card installed, may experience this symptom:

  • ThinkPad R50, R50e, R50p, R51
  • ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p
  • ThinkPad X31

There are 2 Solutions available.

  • Download and install the latest BIOS release. Or,
  • Download and install the current ThinkPad 802.11a/b/g driver package.

Additional Information
The failure is caused by a problem between the wireless driver and the system BIOS versions listed below. The BIOS is being updated to correct the problem, and future BIOS releases will not display this problem.

The following BIOS levels may display the error:

  • X31 - Ver 2.13a (1QET76WW)
  • R50e - Ver 1.13 (1WET60WW)
  • R50, R50p, R51 - Ver 3.08a (1RETD4WW)
  • T40/p, T41/p, T42/p - Ver 3.08a (1RETD4WW) or Ver 3.09f (1RETDBWW)

The wireless driver development team has confirmed this failure. If the latest version of Access Connections and the wireless driver are loaded, this failure will not occur. However, if the factory preload image is recovered while the effected BIOS is on the system, the old driver will be loaded and the system will again experience the failure.
