Installation Instructions

Notes:

  • If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the software. To determine if you should update the software, refer to the Determining Which Version is Installed section.
  • You may need to confirm with your IT administrator if you need to update Management Engine Firmware.
  • Before updating Management Engine Firmware, make sure to connect an AC power and fully charged battery pack to your system.
  • You cannot down grade Management Engine Firmware version to any older version.
Manual Update

This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

[Downloading file]

  1. Click once on the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear.
  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  3. In the window to choose Run or Save, click the Save button.
  4. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click the Save button. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.

[Extracting file]

  1. Make sure to be logged on with administrative account.
  2. Locate the directory where the file was downloaded.
  3. Locate the file that was downloaded and double-click it.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  5. In the "Select Destination Location" window, click Next. If you would like to select a different folder, click Browse.
  6. In the "Ready to Install" window, click Install. All the necessary files will be extracted to the folder selected in the step 9.

[Installing files]

  1. Open a Command Prompt with the following steps.
    [Windows 8]
    1. Hold down the Windows logo key and press X to open a menu at the
      lower-left area of the screen.
    2. Click Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu, and click "Yes".
    [Windows 7]
    1. Open the Start menu, type cmd in the search box and press Ctrl+Shift+Enter.
    [Windows XP]
    1. Open the Start menu, select Run.
    2. Type RUNAS /USER:administrator cmd.exe and press Enter.
    3. Enter the Administrator password.
  2. In the Command Prompt, type the following command and press Enter.
    [Path where the files were extracted]\MEUPDATE.CMD
    Example: C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ME\MEUPDATE.CMD
  3. Read the warning on the display, and press Y or N. If you press Y, ME updating will progress.
  4. Read the notice on the display, and press Enter. Wait for about 3 minutes until the message "Update finished successfully"
    is displayed.
    IMPORTANT: If the following message appears, go to the Recovering from ME update error section below. If the updating has finished successfully, the operation will be completed at step 15.
    ===========================================================================================
    Intel(R) Firmware Update Utility has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
    ===========================================================================================
  5. Close the Command Prompt window, and then shut down the computer.

Finally delete the file saved in the step 4.

Determining which Version is Installed

To check the version of software, please perform the following steps:

  1. Make sure to be logged on with an administrator account.
  2. Refer to the "Manual Update" section, and download and extract the file.
  3. Open a Command Prompt with the following steps.
    [Windows 8]
    1. Hold down the Windows logo key and press X to open a menu at the
      lower-left area of the screen.
    2. Click Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu, and click "Yes".
    [Windows 7]
    1. Open the Start menu, type cmd in the search box and press Ctrl+Shift+Enter.
    [Windows XP]
    1. Open the Start menu, select Run.
    2. Type RUNAS /USER:administrator cmd.exe and press Enter.
    3. Enter the Administrator password.
  4. In the Command Prompt, type the following command and press Enter.
    [Path where the files were extracted]\MEInfoWin.exe
    Example: C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ME\MEInfoWin.exe
    The following information will be displayed.

  5. Note "FW Version", and refer to the Determining Which Version is Installed section to check the installed version.

    If you see any errors, check Device Manager to see if the following device drivers are installed on the system:

    System devices
    Intel® Management Engine Interface

    If not installed, install using the following packages:
    Intel Management Engine Interface 8.1 and Serial Over LAN (SOL) Driver.
