This package provides the ISO image file of UEFI BIOS which is compatible with CD/DVD/BD writing software to create the CD/DVD/BD for the UEFI BIOS update. Hereafter the CD/DVD/BD for the UEFI BIOS update is called as "BIOS Update CD".

The BIOS Update CD can boot the computer disregarding the operating systems and update the UEFI BIOS (including system program and Embedded Controller program) stored in the ThinkPad computer to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

For that purpose, it is necessary to have the CD/DVD/BD writing software (with CD/DVD/BD creation function from the ISO image file) prepared separately.

Also, any one of the following types of CD-RW, CD-RW & DVD Combo, DVD, DVD Multi, BD or other optical drives should be prepared. (Hereafter these drives are called as "optical drive".)

This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.

Note:
Please refer to the README file under the "File details" section for a complete list of changes fixed by this driver update.

1. If the BIOS has been updated to version 1.50 or higher, it is no longer able to roll back to the version before 1.50 because the new 10-digit part number
   and serial number format was once installed. The old BIOS with the 7-digit part number and serial number format can not handle the 10-digit format.
2. You should install the CD/DVD/BD writing software (with CD/DVD/BD creation function from the ISO image file) prepared separately.
3. To boot the computer from the BIOS Update CD, you should have either of the following optical drives.
   • ThinkPad internal
   • USB
Any types of other optical device like ExpressCard device are not supported.
4. To boot the computer from the BIOS Update CD, you may need to change the boot device setting in your Lenovo computer. Refer to the "Prepare boot device" section in this document.
5. The contents of the BIOS Update CD can not be shown by Windows Explorer.

This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

[Downloading file]

1. Click once on the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear.
2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
3. In the window to choose Run or Save, click the Save button.
4. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click the Save button. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.

[Creating BIOS Update CD]

5. Prepare a computer with an optical drive installed and a blank CD/DVD/BD disc, and make sure the CD/DVD/BD writing software is installed into the computer.
6. Locate the folder where the file was downloaded.
7. Locate the file ending in ".ISO" that was downloaded, then double-click it. A writing software will open.
8. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish writing and complete creating BIOS Update CD.

Finally delete the file saved in Step 4.

Confirm that the BIOS CD is set up as bootable and an optical drive is in the boot device list of your Lenovo Setup.

1. Power off the computer.
2. Power on the computer.
3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue OKR button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The "BIOS Setup Utility" menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
4. Choose Startup from the menu.
5. In "UEFI/Legacy Boot", make sure "Both" or "Legacy Only" is chosen.
6. Choose "Boot" from the menu. Note the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list.
7. In "Boot Priority Order", make sure the following device is on top of "ATA HDD0".
   
   • "ATAPI CD0" (when using a internal optical drive)
   • "USB CD"    (when using a USB optical drive)
8. Press the ESC key several times to enter Restart menu and choose "Exit Discarding Changes" to exit from Lenovo Setup, or press the F10 key to save the new setup and then select Yes.
9. Restart the computer.

Notes:

• Due to Security improvement, once updated to the version GDET37WW(1.07) or above, it is prevented to downgrade to GDET36WW(1.06) or older version.
• If the BIOS has been updated to version 1.50 or higher, it is no longer able to roll back to the version before 1.50 because the new 10-digit part number
  and serial number format was once installed. The old BIOS with the 7-digit part number and serial number format can not handle the 10-digit format.
• If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Determining Which BIOS Version is Installed section.
• You need an AC adapter, a charged battery pack and either one of the following optical drives.
  
  • ThinkPad internal
  • USB
• Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the UEFI BIOS in the remote deployment environments.

Attention:
Do not turn off, suspend the computer or remove the BIOS UPDATE CD until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the target computer.
2. Make sure your computer has an optical drive installed.
3. Insert the BIOS Update CD into the optical drive and turn on the computer.
4. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information.
5. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
6. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen.
7. After the information panel appears, remove the BIOS Update CD from the optical drive then press the Enter key to restart the computer.

Note:
After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.

BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer.
3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
   The "BIOS Setup Utility" menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
5. Select Yes.
6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
7. Select Yes.
8. Restart the computer.

There are two ways to check the BIOS version and BIOS ID.

1. Click Start, click All Programs or Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and then click System Information.
   - or -
   Click Start, type msinfo32 in the Start Search box and then click msinfo32 in the Programs list.
2. On the System Information window, make sure System Summary is selected in the left side of the window.
3. Locate the BIOS version/date line in the right side of the window. "LENOVO BIOS ID (BIOS version), date" will be shown.

  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer.
3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
4. Locate the UEFI BIOS Version line and Embedded Controller Version line. "UEFI BIOS version (BIOS ID)" will be shown on the UEFI BIOS Version line.
5. Turn off the computer.

The following versions of UEFI BIOS and ECP (Embedded Controller Program) have been released to date.

Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program (ECP).

• After backing up a Windows XP system to a hard drive connected to the e-SATA port through Rescue and Recovery, when attempting to restore the backup image from the e-SATA hard drive through Rescue and Recovery, a blue screen error
  occurs. Rescue and Recovery can not access the e-SATA hard drive.

The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the UEFI BIOS and others.

• C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS
• D0000-D0FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*a)
• E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS

*a: This area will be released in case of Ethernet LAN Option ROM was NOT used at system boot.

The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386.

• D0000-DFFFF or D1000-DFFFF (*b)

*b: Memory address will be changed to D1000-DFFFF when Ethernet LAN Option ROM was used at system boot.

Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for optional devices by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
