This document supports both X1 Carbon (Type 3443, 3444, 3446, 3448, 3460, 3462, 3463) and X1 Carbon (Type 20A7, 20A8).

Communications Utility enables you to change all settings for the integrated camera, microphone, and audio functions at one place to optimize the Video and Voice over the Internet (VOIP) experience.

The following functions are provided:

  • Integrated camera settings (only for model with the integrated camera)
    • Muting the camera during the video chat (Windows 7/Vista/XP)
    • Automatic zooming of the camera preview using face detection (Windows 7)
    • Screen sharing feature during the VOIP conference (Windows 7)
  • Audio settings

Refer to marketing materials to find out the computer model information and the device(s) each model supports.

Note:

  • If an earlier version of this package has been installed on your computer, updating (overwrite-installing) this package will fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.
  • For Windows XP, please use this version

  • [Important] Ended support for Microsoft Windows XP.
    Note: For Microsoft Windows XP, use the version 3.1.10.0 (GRCU11WW).
  • (Fix) When camera function key is not available on your system, an interface to configure function key will be hidden.
  • (Fix) Fix an issue that some keyboard accelerators might conflict.
  • (Fix) Fix an issue that there might be hang error in event viewer on Communications Utility.
  • (Fix) Fix an issue that the camera view might not be updated after you resume your system from sleep or hibernation.

Version 3.1.10.0

  • [Important] Camera Plus feature is now disabled by default. If package is installed for the first time, this feature would be disabled by default. If older version is already installed and updated by this version, the previous settings will be kept and intact.
  • (Fix) Fixed the issue that a keyboard shortcut might not work.
  • (Fix) Fixed the issue that the service might crash under some circumstances.

Requirements

To enable Communications Utility, it is also required to install the following software:

Communications Utility doesn't support the remote desktop and remote assistance environment.

Installation Instructions

Notes:

  • If Communications Utility works properly on your computer, it might not be necessary to update
    the program. To determine if you should update the software, refer to the Version Information section.
Manual Install

Note:
This section assumes to use Internet Explorer Web browser and Windows Explorer.

To download, extract, and install the program on your computer manually, do the following:

[Downloading file]

  1. Ensure to log on the computer with and administrator account.
  2. Click the file link for the executable on the Web page.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  4. Click Save when you are prompted to select Run or Save.
  5. Select a drive and directory to save the downloaded file.
  6. Locate the folder where the file was downloaded and extract the executable.
  7. Locate the folder where the executable was extracted.
  8. Double-click the executable and follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
      Note: During the installation process, make sure to select the checkbox next to "Install..... now ", and then click Finish.
  9. Restart your computer.
Silent Install

Note: This procedure can only be performed by system administrators.

  1. Click the file link for the executable on the Web page.
  2. When prompted, select a drive and directory to save and extract the executable.
  3. Locate the folder where the executable was extracted.
  4. Double-click the executable and follow the instructions on the screen.
  5. Make sure not to select the checkbox next to Install..... now, and then click Finish to cancel the installation process.
  6. At the command line, execute the setup.exe file with the following option:
      /SP- /VERYSILENT /NORESTART /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES
    Example: [Path where the files were extracted]\setup.exe /SP- /VERYSILENT /NORESTART /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES
Uninstallation Instructions
Manual Uninstall

[Windows 7]

  1. Start Windows and logon with an administrator account.
  2. Click Start, then click Control Panel.
  3. Select Category from the View by drop-down list box, and then click Uninstall a program.
  4. Select ThinkVantage Communications Utility from the Name list, and then click Uninstall/Change.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete uninstallation and restart the computer.

[Windows Vista]

  1. Start Windows and logon with an administrator account.
  2. Click Start, then click Control Panel.
  3. Select Control Panel Home, and click Uninstall a program.
  4. Select ThinkVantage Communications Utility from the name list and click Uninstall/Change.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete uninstallation and restart the computer.

[Windows XP]

  1. Start Windows and logon with an administrator account.
  2. Click Start, then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs, and the "Add or Remove Programs" window opens.
  4. Click ThinkVantage Communications Utility, and click Change/Remove.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete uninstallation and restart the computer.
Determining which Version is Installed

[Windows 7]

  1. Click Start -> Control Panel.
  2. Select Category from the 'View by' drop-down list box, and then click Uninstall a program.
  3. Click Organize -> Layout, and then select Details pane. The details pane will be shown at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Select ThinkVantage Communications Utility from the Name list.
  5. View the product version number in the details pane.

 [Windows Vista]

  1. Click Start -> Control Panel.
  2. Select Control Panel Home, and then click Uninstall a program.
  3. Click Organize -> Layout, and then select Details Pane. The details pane will be shown at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Select ThinkVantage Communications Utility from the Name list.
  5. View the product version number in the details pane.

 [Windows XP]

  1. Click Start -> Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs, and the Add or Remove Programs window opens.
  3. Click ThinkVantage Communications Utility, and then click Click here for support information..
  4. View the version number.

Microsoft .NET framework 3.5 or above is required to be installed on the system.
