The BIOS Update CD can boot the computer disregarding the operating systems and update two sets of the BIOSes (including system programs and Embedded Controller programs) stored in the following ThinkPad computers to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

  • ThinkPad Edge E320 with BIOS ID 8Nxxxxxx
    (Upper two alphanumeric characters of BIOS ID are 8N)
  • ThinkPad Edge E325 with BIOS ID 8Sxxxxxx
    (Upper two alphanumeric characters of BIOS ID are 8S)

  • This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.

  • (Fix) Fixed an issue that did not resume file transfer to the USB device from standby/sleep state or re-detected the USB device after resuming normal operation from standby/sleep state.
  • (Fix) Fixed an issue where the computer might hang after resuming normal operation from standby/sleep state on Windows XP.
  • (Fix) Fixed an issue where the wireless radio would be turned on even though it was turned off by Fn+F5 key operation when all of the following conditions were met.
    1. Press the Fn+F5 keys, then select Turn all radios off.
    2. Shut down the computer.
    3. Detach both the AC adapter and the battery, then wait for a while.
    4. Attach them and turn on the computer.

  • (Fix) Fixed an issue that required the password when a Supervisor Password was set.

Note:
Please refer to the README file under the "File details" section for a complete list of changes fixed by this driver update.

Notes
  • You should install the CD/DVD writing software which supports CD/DVD creation function from the ISO image file to create the BIOS Update CD.
  • To boot the computer from the BIOS Update CD, you should have any one of the following type of optical drives.
    • USB
  • Any other types (ExpressCard or others) are not supported.
  • To boot the computer from the BIOS Update CD, you may need to change the boot device setting in your ThinkPad computer. Refer to the "Prepare boot device" section in this document.
  • The contents of the BIOS Update CD can not be shown by Windows Explorer.

 

Creating the BIOS Update CD

This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

[Downloading file]

  1. Click once on the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear.
  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  3. In the window to choose Run or Save, click Save.
  4. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click Save. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.

[Creating BIOS Update CD]

  1. Prepare a computer with an optical drive installed and a blank CD/DVD disc, and make sure the CD/DVD writing software is installed into the computer.
  2. Locate the folder where the file was downloaded.
  3. Locate the file ending in ".ISO" that was downloaded, then double-click it. A writing software will open.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish writing and complete creating BIOS Update CD.

Finally delete the file saved in the step 4.

 

Preparing the Boot Device

Confirm that an optical drive is in the boot device list of your BIOS setup.

[Windows 8]

  1. Turn on the computer to start Windows.
  2. Hold down the Windows logo key and press C to open the Charm bar on the screen.
  3. Select Settings, then Power from the menu.
  4. Select Reboot to restart the computer.

[Windows 7 and Windows XP]

  1. Power off the computer.
  2. Power on the computer.
  3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press and hold down the Fn key and press the F1 key. The ThinkPad Setup menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Choose "Startup" from the menu.
  5. Choose "Boot" from the menu. Note the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list.
  6. In "Boot Priority Order", make sure the following device is on top of "ATA HDD0".
    • "USB CD" (when using a USB optical drive)
  7. Press and hold down the Fn key and press the F3 key to exit, or press and hold down the Fn key and press the F10 key to save the new setup and then select Yes.
  8. Restart the computer.
Updating the BIOS

Notes:

  • If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Determining Which Version is Installed section.
  • You need an AC adapter, a charged battery pack and any one of the following type of optical drives.
    • USB
  • Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment.

Attention:
Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

[Windows 8]

  1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the target computer.
  2. Make sure your ThinkPad computer has an optical drive installed.
  3. Insert the BIOS Update CD into the optical drive and turn on the computer.
  4. Turn on the computer.
  5. Restart the computer from OS menu.
  6. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" message is displayed at the lower-left area or lower-center area of the screen, press the F12 key. The Boot menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears,type the correct password.
  7. Select "ATAPI CD0" or "USB CD" to boot BIOS Update CD.
  8. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information.
  9. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
  10. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen.
  11. After the information panel appears, remove the BIOS Update CD from the optical drive then press the Enter key to restart the computer.

[Windows 7 and Windows XP]

  1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the target computer.
  2. Make sure your ThinkPad computer has an optical drive installed.
  3. Insert the BIOS Update CD into the optical drive and turn on the computer.
  4. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information.
  5. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
  6. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen.
  7. After the information panel appears, remove the BIOS Update CD from the optical drive then press the Enter key to restart the computer.

 

Initializing the BIOS

Note:

  • After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.

UEFI BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the UEFI BIOS settings:

[Windows 8]

  1. Turn on the computer to start Windows.
  2. Hold down the Windows logo key and press C to open the Charm bar on the screen.
  3. Select Settings, then Power from the menu.
  4. Select Reboot to restart the computer.

[Windows 7 and Windows XP]

  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press and hold down the Fn key and press the F1 key. The ThinkPad Setup menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Press and hold down the Fn key and press the F9 key to load default configuration.
  5. Select Yes.
  6. Press and hold down the Fn key and press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
  7. Select Yes.
  8. Restart the computer.

 

Determining which version is installed

There are two ways to check the BIOS version and BIOS ID.

Checking on Windows

[Windows 8]

  1. Hold down the Windows logo key and press X to open a menu at the lower-left area of the screen.
  2. Select Control Panel from the menu.
  3. Make sure "View by Category" is selected, and select System and Security, select Administrative Tools, and then select System Information.
    - or -
  1. Select Run from the menu.
  2. Type msinfo32, and press Enter.
  3. On the System Information window, make sure System Summary is selected in the left side of the window.
  4. Locate the BIOS version/date line in the right side of the window. "LENOVO BIOS ID (BIOS version), date" will be shown.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

[Windows 7]

  1. Click Start, click All Programs or Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and then click System Information.
    - or -
    Click Start, type msinfo32 in the Start Search box and then click msinfo32 in the Programs list.
  2. On the System Information window, make sure System Summary is selected in the left side of the window.
  3. Locate the BIOS version/date line in the right side of the window. "LENOVO BIOS ID (BIOS version), date" will be shown.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

[Windows XP]

  1. Click Start, click All programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and then click System Information.
    - or -
    Click Start, click Run, type msinfo32 in the Open box and then click OK.
  2. On the "System Information" window, make sure System Summary is selected in the left side of the window.
  3. Locate the BIOS version/date line in the right side of the window. "LENOVO BIOS ID (BIOS version), date" will be shown.
Checking on ThinkPad Setup

[Windows 8]

  1. Turn on the computer to start Windows.
  2. Hold down the Windows logo key and press C to open the Charm bar on the screen.
  3. Select Settings, then Power from the menu.
  4. Select Reboot to restart the computer.
  5. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" message is displayed at the lower-left area or lower-center of the screen, press the F1 key. The ThinkPad Setup menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  6. Locate the UEFI BIOS Version line and Embedded Controller Version line. "UEFI BIOS version (BIOS ID)" will be shown on the UEFI BIOS Version line.
  7. Turn off the computer.

[Windows 7 and Windows XP]

  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The ThinkPad Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Check the UEFI BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. "BIOS ID (BIOS version)" will be shown on the BIOS Version line.
  5. Turn off the computer.
