System can not restart/shutdown from the start menu with McAfee Internet Security/McAfee VirusScan Plus preinstalled with Microsoft XP - ThinkCentre M90z,ThinkPad T410, T410i, L412, L420, L421, L512, L520
Symptom

With Microsoft Windows XP system with McAfee Internet Security/McAfee VirusScan Plus preinstalled, go though out of box setup, try to restart or shutdown system from start menu, does not work. User has to cold boot the system, and after that, the problem will not occur again.

Affected configurations

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

  • ThinkCentre M90z
  • ThinkPad T410, T410i, L412, L420, L421, L512, L520

Applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Solution

The hang is due to a wait on the loader lock. This problem in Shimeng.dll was fixed in the below KB. Though the date of the binary on the system is latest than the below KB, the version is lower.

KB949900 The RunOnce.exe process may stop responding during the driver installation process on a Windows XP-based computer

Limitation

This is a permanent limitation.

Workaround

Manually power off the system (Press the power button for several seconds) and restart.
