CD-RW drive intermittently will not eject - ThinkCentre A30, A50, A50p, M50, M50e, S50 / ThinkPad R51, R52, T42, T42p, X40

After inserting a program CD or DVD, the drive will not eject. The cause of this problem is a conflict between IMAPI and IBM DLA.

How to recreate the problem

The following procedure will cause an Autorun program CD or DVD not to be ejectable. The frequency of failure is approximately 1 in 10 reboots:

  1. Power on the system.
  2. When you reach the Window XP desktop, insert Autorun CD media.
  3. Cancel installation menu, then press eject button or select S/W eject on drive property. The disc will not eject.
Affected configurations

Any of the following ThinkCentre or ThinkPad systems running Microsoft Windows XP Home or Professional configured with IBM DLA 4.95:

  • ThinkCentre A30 (type 2296, 8191, 8198, 8199, 8316, 8434)
  • ThinkCentre A50 (type 8084, 8085, 8089, 8090, 8126, 8147, 8148, 8149, 8174, 8175, 8176, 8177, 8178)
  • ThinkCentre A50p (type 8192, 8193, 8194, 8195, 8196, 8197, 8432, 8433)
  • ThinkCentre M50 (type 8128, 8185, 8186, 8187, 8188, 8189, 8190, 8413, 8414, 8415, 8430, 8431)
  • ThinkCentre M50e (type 8179)
  • ThinkCentre S50 (type 8086, 8087, 8088, 8094)
  • ThinkPad T42, T42p, R51, R51p, R52, X40, X41

Product Development is aware of this and is working with the vendor to correct this issue. In the meantime we have included another solution to resolve the problem.

To remove a stuck disc, do the following:

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  2. Right-click the CD icon, then click Properties.

  1. Click the DLA tab.

  1. Uncheck Enable DLA on your drive , then click the Apply button.
  2. Recheck Enable DLA on your drive, then click the Apply button again. Disc can now be ejected by using the eject button.
  3. Click the OK button to close the CD properties window.

Note: If you do not need DLA, then uncheck Enable DLA on your drive, then click the Apply button.
