This package installs the software (Intel AHCI) to enable the following device.
- Intel® 5 series 4 Port SATA AHCI controller

Supported ThinkPad systems:
- Edge 14, Edge 15
- Edge E40, Edge E50
- L412, L512

Supported Operating Systems:
- Microsoft Windows 7 32-bit
- Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3

Note:
- If this package has been installed, updating (overwrite-installing) this package will fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.
- This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.

Installation Instructions
Notes:
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 or later is required before installing this software on Windows XP.
  • If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the software. To determine if you should update the software, refer to the Determining Which BIOS Version is Installed section.
Manual Install

This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

[Downloading file]

  1. Click once on the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear.
  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  3. In the window to choose Run or Save, click the Save button.
  4. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click the Save button. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.

[Extracting file]

  1. Make sure to be logged on with an administrator account.
  2. Locate the folder where the file was downloaded.
  3. Locate the file that was downloaded and double-click it.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  5. In the "Select Destination Location" window, click Next. If you would like to select a different folder, click Browse.
  6. In the "Ready to Install" window, click Install. All the necessary files will be extracted to the folder selected in step 9.
  7. Uncheck the checkbox next to "Install ..... now", and then click Finish to complete extraction.

Delete the file saved in the step 4.

[Update or clean install for Windows 7/Vista]

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click Computer, then click Properties. At the left pane, click Device Manager.
  3. Double-click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers category.
  4. Double-click either of the following devices.
    • Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller
    • Intel(R) 5 series 4 Port SATA AHCI controller
  5. Click the Driver tab, then click Update Driver Software...
  6. Click Browse my computer for driver software.
  7. Click Browse..., then point to driver location specified in step 9.
  8. Make sure the checkbox next to "Include subfolders" is checked and click Next.
  9. Click Close when the installation has completed.
  10. Click Yes to restart the computer.

[Update install for Windows XP]

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
  3. Double-click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers category.
  4. Double-click either of the following devices.
    • Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller
    • Intel(R) 5 series 4 Port SATA AHCI controller
  5. Click Driver tab and click Update Driver.
  6. Select No, not this time and click Next.
  7. Select Install from a list or specific location and click Next.
  8. Select Search for the best driver in these locations and Include this location in the search.
  9. Click Browse, then point to driver location specified in step 9.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Click Next. The driver installation starts.
  12. Click Finish when the installation has completed.
  13. Click Close to restart the computer.

[Clean install for Windows XP]

Note:

If you select AHCI for Serial ATA (SATA) in the BIOS Setup Utility before installing this software, your computer will not respond; it will only display a blue screen.

  1. Attach a floppy disk drive to your computer.
  2. Locate the folder selected in the step 9.
    Example: C:\DRIVERS\Intel(R) SATA controller AHCI driver
  3. Copy all files to a floppy disk.
  4. Make sure that Serial ATA (SATA) enables AHCI mode in the target computer.
    1. Power on the target computer.
    2. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo appears on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
    3. Select Config.
    4. Select Serial ATA (SATA).
    5. Make sure that AHCI is selected.
    6. Press the F3 key twice to exit.
  5. Make sure that Windows XP can be installed from the optical drive.
    1. Select Startup.
    2. Select Boot.
    3. In Boot Priority Order, set "ATAPI CD0: xxx" to the top of the list, "1".
    4. Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes. The computer will restart.
  6. Power off the target computer.
  7. Attach a USB floppy disk drive to the target computer.
  8. Insert the Windows XP SP3 CD into the optical drive, and restart the target computer.
  9. To install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver first, press the F6 key.
  10. When prompted, select S for Specify Additional Device.
  11. When prompted, insert the floppy disk that you created in step 14, and press Enter.
  12. Select Intel(R) 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller, and press Enter.
  13. To continue the installation, press Enter again. Leave the floppy disk in the drive until the next reboot; the software may need to be copied from the floppy disk again when the files are copied during setup.
  14. Follow the instruction to complete the Operating System installation.

 

Unattended Install

Not supported.

 

Determining which Version is Installed

[Windows 7/Vista]

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
  3. At the left pane, click Device Manager.
  4. Double-click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers category.
  5. Double-click Intel(R) 5 series 4 Port SATA AHCI controller.
  6. Click the Driver tab.
  7. Check Driver Version.

[Windows XP]

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click My Computer, then click Properties.
  3. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
  4. Double-click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers category.
  5. Double-click Intel(R) 5 series 4 Port SATA AHCI controller.
  6. Click the Driver tab.
  7. Check Driver Version.
