Installation procedures of Windows XP - ThinkPad T410
  1. The XP install disk must be Service Pack 3, or a retail XP install CD with SP3 slipstreamed as the Lenovo preload uses Windows XP SP3 as basis for the Windows XP preload.
    Note:

    • Set the Serial ATA setting from AHCI to Compatibility mode (this will prevent the BSOD 0x7B error on booting the XP media).
    • Install Windows XP Professional into the primary partition.
  2. At this point there are several methods of Lenovo ThinkPad Device driver installs:
  • The first is to install the Intel Ethernet driver, DotNet 2.0 and ThinkVantage System 3.14 update. Once TVSU is installed, then it can be used to automatically install device drivers and utilities. This method is fast but the update should be run several times to ensure all drivers are installed.
  • The next option is to have available a copy of the C:\SWTOOLS folder from a T410\T510 Windows XP preload. All the drivers and apps will be located there.
  • The final option is to manually download and extract each individual device driver from the Lenovo device driver matrix at here.
ThinkVantage System Update (TVSU) install updates

TVSU will locate Critical, Recommended and Optional updates. All these updates should be installed and depending on the specific model, there will be 400 to 500 meg of updates to download and install. Rescue and Recovery can be removed from the download list if that application is not being implemented. DotNet Framework 2.0 is a required prerequisite for TVSU, but since DotNet Framework 3.5 is required for Intel AMT drivers, the install of DotNet 3.5 is suggested.

Once TVSU has finished installed there could be several unknown devices remaining in device manager. This is because not all of the drivers have been added to the TVSU server list. Drivers are added to the list each day so multiple installs on multiple days will result in different unknown devices.

Installation of individual drivers from \SWTOOLS folder

After the installation of Windows XP, the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver (formerly known as Intel Matrix Storage Manager, IMSM) should be installed, this driver commonly known as the SATA driver will allow for faster drive access for the remainder of the device driver install.

To install the IRST driver run the INSTALL.CMD file from the \SWTOOLS\IMSM\PREPARE folder. Once the install runs, then reboot the machine and press F1 to access bios and change the SATA controller back to AHCI mode. The Add new hardware wizard will run, if necessary, point the install wizard to the IMSM folder for additional files, and reboot when requested. If after the IMSM driver install you still have an unknown device in device manager listed as PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processor, then the IPS or Intel Turbo Boost Technology driver, can be download at here.

Install the next drivers in sequence as per below:

In sequenceDrivers nameDrivers location to be execute
1Intel ChipsetThis driver, as INF files, is available in the SWTOOLS folder, but the driver is easier to install if downloaded from the Lenovo support web page at here.
2AMT component

The management engine and the SOL component are merged into a common installer. To install SETUP.Exe from the \SWTOOLS\AMT\MEI_SOL_installer folder. There is a DotNet 3.5 pre-requisite for AMT drivers, which is available from Microsoft.com.
