Windows XP Installation Instructions - ThinkPad T400, T500 and W500
Symptoms

Windows XP Installation Instructions for Thinkpad T400/T500/W500 series

Affected configurations

The following ThinkPad systems running Microsoft Windows XP may be affected by this symptom:

  • ThinkPad T400
  • ThinkPad T500
  • ThinkPad W500
Installation of Windows XP on Thinkpad T400, T500 and W500
  1. The Windows XP install disk must have at least Service Pack 2(SP2) slipstreamed prior to installation. The machine will display a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) on PCI.SYS if Windows XP Service Pack 0(SP0) or Service Pack 1(SP1) is used.

  2. For switchable graphic machines, boot into bios via F1, select config -> display and set the following parameters:
    • Default Primary Video Device [Internal]
    • Boot display device [Thinkpad LCD] *
    • Graphics Device [Discrete Graphics] **
    • OS detection for switchable [Disable]

    * Change this setting to VGA or DVI if the machine will be used on a Advanced Dock
** Switchable Graphics is a Windows Vista feature only. Set the Serial ATA setting from AHCI to Compatability mode (this will prevent the BSOD 0x7B error on booting the XP media.

  3. Install Windows XP Professional
Video Installation

ATI video driver uses ISSETUP.EXE to install, not SETUP.EXE. The latter installs the Intel video componet. This driver is available in the \swtools\drivers\video folder.

Installation of individual drivers from SWTOOLS folder

After the installation of Windows XP, the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver should be installed, this driver commonly known as the SATA driver will allow for faster drive access for the remainder of the device driver install. After the SATA driver install, and the Intel Chipset driver install, there is no specific order for the remaining device driver installs.

  1. To install the ISMS driver run the INSTALL.CMD file from the \SWTOOLS\ISMS\PREPARE folder. Once the install runs, then reboot the machine and press F1 to access bios and change the SATA controller back to AHCI mode. The Add new hardware wizard will run, if necessary, point the install wizard to the IMSM folder for additional files, and reboot when requested.
  2. The Intel Chipset drivers should be installed next, run the INFINST_AUTOL.EXE from the \SWTOOLS\OSFIXES\INTELINF folder and reboot when requested.
  3. To install the AMT componet, there are two separate installs required. The management engine and the SOL componet. To install the management engine componet, run SETUP.EXE from the \SWTOOLS\AMT\MEI folder and then run SETUP.EXE from the \SWTOOLS\AMT\SOL folder. This folder may not be present on some preloads, and if not can be downloaded from the Lenovo web site listed earlier in this document.
