FWSS2814 Feb 2013

This utility will examine your system configuration and detect all Solid State Drives (SSD) installed in your ThinkPad.

The utility will then check the firmware revision of the SSD and judge whether your system requires a firmware update or not. If required, it will
prompt you to run the appropriate firmware update program for your drive.

For that purpose, it is necessary to have the CD/DVD/BD writing software (with CD/DVD/BD creation function from the ISO image file) prepared separately.

Also, any one of the following types of CD-RW, CD-RW & DVD Combo, DVD, DVD Multi, BD or other drives should be prepared. (Hereafter these drives are
called as "optical drive".)
- ThinkPad internal optical drive

A written disc will be bootable. It will boot from your ThinkPad Optical Disc Drive(*) and run the update utility program.
* Your ThinkPad may need to change the boot device setting to boot from an Optical Disc Drive. (See the "Prepare boot device" section in this document)

Notes
  • This package is compiled into an ISO format, which is compatible with CD writing software such as RecordNow, and writeable to a CD-R or a CD-RW disc.
Note: If your RecordNow CD writing program does not have a Burn Image entry, click here to upgrade RecordNow.
  • Please remove the SSD password. Otherwise the firmware can't be updated and an error message will be displayed.
  • A written CD-R or CD-RW disc will be bootable. It will boot from your ThinkPad optical disc drive and run the update utility program. Your ThinkPad may need to change the boot device setting to boot from an optical disc drive. See the Prepare boot device section in this document.
  • The update utility will not find an SSD in a Docking Station
  • The utility contains several executable files, but DO NOT RUN THESE PROGRAMS. Running these programs manually could ruin your drive.
  • The SSD Firmware Update Utility does not support a suspend/hibernation/resume feature of the ThinkPad while the firmware update utility is running. Please do not use Fn-F4 or equivalent functions.

Making a Optical disc to use

This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

[Downloading file]

  1. Click once on the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear.
  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  3. In the window to choose Run or Save, click the Save button.
  4. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click the Save button.
A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.

[Creating an SSD Firmware Update disc]

  1. Prepare a computer with an optical drive installed and a blank CD/DVD/BD disc, and make sure the CD/DVD/BD writing software is installed into the computer.
  2. Locate the folder where the file was downloaded.
  3. Locate the file ending in ".ISO" that was downloaded, then double-click it. A writing software will open.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish writing and complete creating an SSD Firmware Update CD.

Finally delete the file saved in the step 4.

Prepare the boot device

The resulting a optical disc includes an operating system and is bootable on the supported ThinkPad models.

Note:

  • The Solid State Drive Firmware Update Utility bootable disc does not support USB Optical Disc Drives, PCMCIA/CardBUS Optical Disc Drives, Optical Disc Drives in a Docking Station bay, or any other drives other than the Optical Disc Drive in the ThinkPad UltraBay. Other drives will not be updated correctly by this firmware update utility.
  • Please write down the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list.

Confirm that an optical drive is in the boot device list of your BIOS setup.

  1. Power off the computer.
  2. Power on the computer.
  3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Choose Startup from the menu.
  5. Choose Boot from the menu. Note the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list.
  6. In "Boot Priority Order", make sure "ATAPI CD0" (when using a ThinkPad internal optical drive), "USB CD" (when using a USB optical drive) or "ATAPI CD1" (when using an Ultrabay optical drive installed in the Docking Station) is on top of "ATA HDD0".
  7. Press the F3 key to exit, or press the F10 key to save the new setup and then select Yes.
  8. Restart the computer.

Installation Instructions

Attention:
Please do not power off the ThinkPad during the firmware update, or your SSD may NOT be usable anymore.

Notes:

  • The update utility will not find an SSD in a Docking Station
  • The utility contains several executable files, but DO NOT RUN THESE PROGRAMS. Running these programs manually could ruin your drive.
  • The SSD Firmware Update Utility does not support a suspend/hibernation/resume feature of the ThinkPad while the firmware update utility is running. Please do not use Fn-F4 or equivalent functions.

After the above sections Making a Optical disc to use to use and Prepare the boot device have been completed, follow these steps.

  • Please connect the AC adapter and use a fully charged battery to power the ThinkPad system during the update. This will avoid an accidental loss of power.
  • Important Notice: Please remove the SSD password. Otherwise the firmware can't be updated and an error message will be displayed.
  • Note: Install only one SSD into your ThinkPad.
  1. Place the optical disc you created in "Making a Optical disc to use" to use section into your ThinkPad Optical Disc Drive.
  2. Boot the system with the Firmware Update Utility.
  3. Drives that have been detected will be listed in the upper area of the Main Menu.
    • If a drive that requires an update is detected, it will be shown with a blinking mark on the left. If you find no blinking mark, your SSD has the latest firmware and there is no need to update or the update firmware is not valid for your drive. Remove the Firmware Update Utility and shutdown your ThinkPad.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to update the necessary drives.
  5. When the installation is complete, remove the Firmware Update Utility disc from the Optical Disc Drive and power off your ThinkPad system.
Note: Do not restart the ThinkPad system using the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys.
  6. Enter BIOS Setup Utility again, if you need to restore your original boot order and/or a solid state drive password.
