Short for picture element, a pixel is a single point in a graphic image. LCD technology products display pictures by dividing the display screen into thousands (or millions) of pixels, arranged in rows and columns. The pixels are placed close together so that they appear connected. A full pixel is a combination of one red, one green, and one blue sub-pixel.

A pixel defect is actually a malfunctioning subpixel:

• Not really a pixel defect
• More correctly called as subpixel defect
• One of the three subpixels that compose a pixel has malfunctioned
• Industry uses the term pixel defects to describe the subpixel defect

Types of pixel defects
	Bright pixel: Where the Red, Green and Blue sub pixels are bright. Visible as a white dot on a black screen.
	Dark pixel: Where the Red, Green and Blue sub pixels are dark. Visible as a black dot on a white screen.
	Bright sub pixel: Where a Red, Green or Blue sub pixel is bright. Visible as a colored dot on a black screen.

This International Standards Organization Standard defines a specification for classes of pixel defects as detailed below:

Class 0 products have no pixel or sub pixel defects.

Class 1 products can have all or any of the following defects:

• 1 Bright Pixel (All sub pixels are bright)
• 1 dark Pixel (All sub pixels are dark)
• 2 single or adjacent bright or dark sub pixels
• Up to a total of 5 bright or dark sub pixels (determined by type)

Class 2 products can have all or any of the following defects:

• 2 Bright Pixel (All sub pixels are bright)
• 2 dark Pixel (All sub pixels are dark)
• 2 single or adjacent bright or dark sub pixels
• Up to a total of 10 bright or dark sub pixels (determined by type, bright sub pixels cannot exceed 5)

Class 3 products can have all or any of the following defects:

• 5 Bright Pixel (All sub pixels are bright)
• 15 dark Pixel (All sub pixels are dark)
• Up to a total of 50 bright or dark sub pixels

All Lenovo Monitors and All-in-One Desktop Systems (Commercial and Consumer) will exceed ISO 9241 Class 1 and Class 2 requirements in that Pixel and adjacent Sub Pixel Defects are not permitted. Sub pixel defects in most products meet ISO9241 Class 1 requirements as shown below in the table.
