Note: This driver can be installed with Software Installer, or by following the instructions below.
Clean install
Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
Extract this package onto the hard drive.
Click Start and then click Run.
Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click OK.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
Click Finish and reboot the system when prompted in order to complete the installation.
Update install
Note: Remove any previously installed driver using the uninstall step in the next section.
Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
Extract this package onto the hard drive.
Click Start and then click Run.
Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click OK.
If the dialog box appears, select Reinstall or Update and then click Next.
Click Finish to reboot the system and complete the installation.
Unattended install for Windows 2000/XP
Note: This is for system administrators' use only.
Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
Extract this package onto the hard drive.
Click Start and then click Run.
Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE -S -SMS in the Open box and click OK.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
Uninstall
Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
Depending on the operating system choose one of the following paths:
For Windows 98SE/Me/2000, click Start, select Settings, then click Control Panel.
For Windows XP, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
Click SoundMax, and then click Change/Remove or Add/Remove.
Select Remove or OK, then click Next or OK.
Click Finish or OK and reboot the system to fully uninstall the drivers.
Determining which version is installed
Windows 98SE/2000
Start Windows.
Click Start, select Settings, and then click ControlPanel.
Double-click System. For Windows 2000, click the Hardware tab at the top of the System Properties window.
Click DeviceManager.
Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
Select SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
Right-click SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties.
Click the Driver tab.
Click DriverDetails.
Depending on the operating system choose one of the following paths:
For Windows 2000, select C:\winnt\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys to display the version number, where C:\winnt is the location the operating system is installed. (Confirm the last 4 digits match the version)
For Windows 98SE, select C:\windows\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys to display the version number, where C:\windows is the location the operating system is installed. (Confirm the last 4 digits match the version)
Windows XP
Start Windows XP.
Click Start, and then click ControlPanel.
Click PerformanceandMaintenance.
Click System.
Click the Hardware tab.
Click DeviceManager.
Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
Select SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
Right-click SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties.
Click the Driver tab.
Click DriverDetails.
Select C:\winnt\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys to display the version number, where C:\winnt is the location the operating system is installed. (Confirm the last 4 digits match the version)
