Pen stylus can become stuck in the system - ThinkPad X41 Tablet
Symptom
The pen stylus becomes lodged in the securing clips inside the system and is difficult or impossible to remove. Some early ThinkPad X41 Tablet systems were shipped with stylus pens that are fractions of a mm above the defined specification for the pens. This extra width is enough that the securing clips inside the system are unable to release the tablet pen unless forced by the user.

Affected configuration
Any of the following systems running Microsoft Windows XP:
  • ThinkPad X41 Tablet (type 1866 and 1867)

Solution
A replacement pen is required. The pen should be replaced through the normal support channels.

Additional information
The failure was caused by an improperly calibrated pen mold. The problem has been resolved, and all future stock will meet the size specifications.
