Fan does not stop and blows out cold air - ThinkPad R50/p

Symptom
When the ThinkPad is idle after a period of activity the fan rotates down to its lowest speed setting, at which it continues to run for approximately 5 to 6 minutes. During this time the fan blows out cold air. The fan in these models is used to control the overall system temperature and not just the CPU temperature. A measurement of the CPU temperature is not indicative of the speed of the fan. This is a normal function of the fan and does not represent a hardware problem with the fan or ThinkPad.

Affected Configuration
The following ThinkPad systems may experience this symptom:

  • ThinkPad R50/p

Solution
The fan and ThinkPad are working as designed. No parts should be replaced on ThinkPads exhibiting this symptom.
