This package provides the Ethernet driver for Windows 98/98 SE and NT 4.0. The Ethernet driver enables or updates the Ethernet function of the following adapters on the following ThinkPad systems.

One of the following Ethernet device is integrated into your ThinkPad depending on your ThinkPad model.
- Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection (10/100 Ethernet)
- Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection (Gigabit Ethernet)

This release supports the following systems:
- ThinkPad R40 (10/100 Ethernet)
- ThinkPad T40, T41, T42
- ThinkPad X31, X32(*4)
- ThinkPad X40 (*4)

Note:
*4 Windows 98/98 SE is not supported.

Notes:

  • ThinkPad Software Installer provides an install/uninstall wizard for this device driver and for the Intel PROSet software for the following operating systems:
    • Windows 98, 98 SE
    • Windows 2000
    • Windows XP

Windows 98
  1. Extract this package onto your hard drive.
  2. Start Windows 98/98 SE.
  3. Click Start, select Settings, and click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon.
  5. Click the Device Manager tab.
  6. Click the + mark to expand Network adapters.
  7. Right-click one of the following devices in Network adapters and click Properties:
    • Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection
    • Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection
  8. Click the Driver tab.
  9. Click the Update Driver... button.
  10. Click the Next button in the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box.
  11. Select Search for a better driver than the one your device is using now. (Recommended)
  12. Click the Next button.
  13. Select Specify a location: only.
  14. Specify the path to one of the following directories in the Specify a location: field.
    • Windows 98 SE with the Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection C:\Drivers\WIN\Ethernet\PRO100\WIN_98ME
    • Windows 98/98 SE with the for Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection C:\Drivers\WIN\Ethernet\PRO1000\WIN_98ME
  15. Click the Next button.
  16. Click the Next button.
  17. Click the Next button. The driver installation starts.
  18. Click the Finish button when the installation completes.
  19. Click Yes when prompted to restart the system.

Note: For the clean install instructions, refer to tpet1u98.txt.

Windows NT
Note: Install both the Ethernet driver and the Ethernet power management driver.
  1. Extract this package onto your hard drive.
  2. Start Windows NT 4.0.
  3. Click Start, select Settings, and click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the Network icon.
  5. Click the Adapters tab.
  6. Select one of the following devices:
    • Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
    • Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection
  7. Click the Update button.
  8. Specify the path to one of the following directories in the Windows NT Setup dialog box:
    • Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection C:\Drivers\WIN\Ethernet\PRO100\WINNT4
    • Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection C:\Drivers\WIN\Ethernet\PRO1000\WINNT4
  9. Click the Continue button.
  10. Click the Close button.
  11. Click Yes when prompted to restart the system.

Ethernet Power Management Driver (NDIS PM Interface)

  1. Start Windows NT 4.0.
  2. Click Start, select Settings, and click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the Network icon.
  4. Click the Services tab.
  5. Select NDIS PM Interface.
  6. Click the Update button.
  7. Specify C:\Drivers\WIN\Ethernet\NPMINT40 in the Insert Disk dialog box.
  8. Click the Continue button.
  9. Click the Close button.
  10. Click Yes when prompted to restart the system.

Note: For the clean install instructions, refer to tpet1u98.txt.

Intel PROSet Installation

Notes:

  • Before upgrading Intel PROSet, you have to uninstall the current PROSet that is installed on your ThinkPad system.
  • In Windows NT 4.0, the device driver installation installs Intel PROSet II automatically.

Windows 98

  1. Execute PROSet.exe in one of the following folders per your operating system that you are using on your ThinkPad. \APPS\PROSet\WIN98SEME
  2. Click the Next button.
  3. Click I accept the terms in the license agreement and click the Next button.
  4. Select Typical and click the Next button.
  5. Click the Install button.
  6. Click the Finish button.

Unattended Installation

For customers who need unattended installation, the following DOS drivers are included in the etht1uds.exe package. The DOS drivers can be used only for this purpose.

  • E100B.DOS for Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
  • E1000.DOS for Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection

Unattended installation instructions are included in the APPS\SETUP\PUSH sub-directory of this package.

To check the Windows version of the device driver that is installed on your system:

  1. Right-click the My Computer icon.
  2. Click Find.
  3. Type one of the NDIS driver names in Named: field. For example, if you are using the Gigabit Ethernet model in Windows NT 4.0, type E1000NT4.sys in the field.
  4. Click the Find Now button. It lists the NDIS driver(s). If it does not list the NDIS driver, the Ethernet device driver is not installed in your system.
  5. Right-click the NDIS driver that is found in the Windows folder.
  6. Click Properties.
  7. Click the Version tab.
  8. Click Product Version in the Items name: field.
