This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS program stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

This release supports the following ThinkPad systems:
- X31
- X32

The following Microsoft operating systems are supported:
- Windows 98(*1)
- Windows 98 Second Edition(*1)
- Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6a or later
- Windows 2000
- Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional)

Notes:
- (*1) Supports ThinkPad X31 only.
- (*1) Before using the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, Lenovo recommends that you apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web Site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887.
- This version of the BIOS will only work with Embedded Controller Program (EC) Vers 1.08 (or higher), and is available in an additional package, a link is provided below.
- If you need to update the ECProgram as well as the BIOS, update the BIOS first.

Summary of changes
Version 1QET97WW (3.02)
Note:
This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.08 (or higher).
  • (Fix) With the BIOS version 3.01 (QET96WW) or later, the system will shut down on Wake On Lan with a Ultrabay Second Hard Drive adapter, even if no password is set in the second hard drive.
  • (Fix) An error appears on power-on, just after powering off at a password prompt with a newly attached USB storage device.
  • (Fix) The system may not start with some USB devices, attached to docking station or port replicator.
  • (Fix) Bluetooth Software will be installed by Software Installer on the model without Bluetooth features.

Installation instructions
Notes:
  • To determine if you should update the system program (BIOS), refer to the Summary of changes section.
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS.
  • If your system is attached to any kind of port replicator, turn off the system and detach it before proceeding.
  • If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your system, turn off the system and detach it before proceeding.
  • Before using this BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, Lenovo recommends applying the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887.
  • Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment.
Automatic installation
Use the Software Installer version 3.01.0503 (or higher).
Software Installer will check both installed programs on your ThinkPad and the latest drivers on the Lenovo Web site. Then download and update the programs automatically if a newer version is available.

Manual installation
  1. Print these instructions or display on another system.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the system.
  3. Start Windows 98 or start Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target system.
  4. Make a temporary directory on the hard drive (for instance, C:\Temp)
  5. Download the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory.
  6. Click the Start button, then click Run.
  7. In the Open dialog box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility (e.g. C:\Temp\1QUJ18US.EXE) and then press the Enter key.
    Note: For unattended update, specify the file name with options "-s -a -s". (e.g. C:\Temp\1QUJ18US.EXE -s -a -s) The BIOS is updated without any user interaction.
  8. Follow the instructions on the screen.
    Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again."
    Windows will shutdown automatically and the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen appears.
  9. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
  10. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
  11. Select Update system program and follow the instruction on the screen.

    Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the system until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the system while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.

    After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off.
Initializing the BIOS
In some cases, it may be a good idea to try BIOS initialization when you have some troubles. To initialize the BIOS settings:
  1. Turn off the system.
  2. Turn on the system.
  3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
  5. Select Yes.
  6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration.
  7. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically.

To enter the BIOS Setup Utility:

  1. Turn off the system.
  2. Turn on the system.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Check the BIOS Version and Date as well as the Embedded Controller Version and Date.
  5. Turn off the system.
Memory Map information
The following information shows memory areas that are either unavailable or that can be included with a memory manager such as EMM386.

Reserved Area
The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by BIOS and others.
  • C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS
  • D0000-D3FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*2)
  • DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*3)
  • E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS

Notes:

  • (*2) This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in the BIOS Setup Utility. But, if disabled, both Wake-on-LAN and PXE boot functions do not work.
  • (*3) This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility. Even if disabled, the USB devices work under the Windows environment.
Usable Area
The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386.
  • D4000-DBFFF

Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.

Restrictions
(For ThinkPad X31 2003 fall models and 2004 spring models)
Note: Passwords can be set with passphrase feature, however, that supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP only. Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0 are not supported.
