This Embedded Controller Program Service Diskette updates the embedded controller program (H8 controller firmware) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

This release supports the following system:
- ThinkPad R50, R50p
- ThinkPad R51 (Machine Type 1829, 1830, 1831 and 1836)(*1)
- ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p

Note: (*1) Machine Type 2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894 and 2895 of ThinkPad R51 family are not supported.

The supported operating systems are as follows:
- Microsoft Windows XP
- Microsoft Windows 2000
- Microsoft Windows 98 and 98 Second Edition
- Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6a or later

I. Summary of changes

Version 3.04 - 1RHT71WW
Note:
This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 3.13 (or higher).

  • (Fix) Sometimes battery does not charge.
  • (Fix) Some MS PS/2 mice will not work.
  • (Fix) Some Fn key combinations will not work. This fix also is in BIOS, EC version 3.04 needs BIOS version 3.13 and vise versa.
  • (Fix) After completing the Embedded Controller Program update and the computer is automatically rebooted, the error message, "Operating System not found", may be displayed and reboot stops.

Version 3.04 - 1RHT71WW - Revision
Note: This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 3.13 (or higher).

  • (Fix) (The German Windows XP environment only, Utility version only) During update, the error message,"An error occurred while accessing the diskette drive. Make sure that the correct diskette is in the drive." may be displayed and update stops.

Notes:

  1. There is no functional change from former Version 3.04. If you have already updated the Embedded Controller Program to version 3.04 without any problems, there is no need to update the Embedded Controller Program with this release.
  2. ThinkPad Software Installer may not be able to update the Embedded Controller Program with this release. In such the case, manual installation is required. Refer to the Updating Embedded Controller Program section and follow the update instructions.

II. Installation instructions

Notes:

  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the embedded controller program.
  • If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • Before using this embedded controller program Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, Lenovo recommends applying the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887.
  1. Print these instructions or display on another computer.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
  3. Start a supported version of Windows on the target computer.
  4. Make the temporary directory on the hard disk drive (for instance, C:\Temp)
  5. Download the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory.
  6. Click the Start button, then click Run.
  7. In the Open dialogue box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored Embedded Controller Program Update Utility. (E.g. C:\Temp\1RHJ10US.EXE) Then press the Enter key.
  8. Follow the instructions.
  9. When completed, the system is automatically turned off.

    Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the computer while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.

    After the update has been completed, do the following to make the changes effective.
  10. Make sure there is no diskette in the diskette drive, then turn on the computer.
  11. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button message is displayed at the lower left of the screen, press the Access IBM button.
  12. Select Start setup utility. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enters the password.
  13. Verify the Embedded Controller Version.
Unattended install

  1. Do the same instructions above from step 1 to step 6.
  2. Specify filename with the full path name where you stored Embedded Controller Program Update Utility with options -s -a -s. (E.g. C:\Temp\EMBU1R68.EXE -s -a -s)
  3. Then press the Enter key. Windows will shut down automatically and the system BIOS program will be updated without any user interaction.
III. Determining which version is installed

Each version of the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility contains the following embedded controller program. The version of embedded controller program can be viewed by running ThinkPad Configuration from your operating system and selecting the System Information button or by invoking the BIOS Setup Utility.

  1. Make sure there is no diskette in the diskette drive, then turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button message is displayed at the lower left of the screen, press the Access IBM button.
  4. Select Start setup utility. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you type in the password. The embedded controller version is displayed on the first screen of the BIOS Setup Utility.
