Battery test - ThinkPad 600/E
Important NOTE: The warranty on your IBM battery is one year. This process may increase the life of your battery even after its warranty period. However, if it does not, you may need to purchase a new battery if your battery is over one year old.

This process is designed to do two things:
1. Test the battery to determine whether or not it is operating at normal capacity
2. Potentially increase the battery life by reconditioning the battery

There are two ways to run this test, Unattended and Attended. The Unattended method allows you to leave the computer unattended during the battery rundown portion of the test. During this time, you will be unable to use the system. The Attended method allows you to use the computer while the battery is running down.

Unattended test
  1. Fully charge the battery.
  2. With the system powered off, disconnect the AC adapter plug.
  3. While holding down the F1 key, power-on the system. This will bring up the EasySetup screen.
  4. Select the Test icon.
  5. Press the ctrl+A keys to go to Advanced Diagnostics. This will bring up the ThinkPad FRU Connections check screen, select Exit.
  6. Press the ctrl+Break keys (The Break key is located on the Pause key) to exit from Keyboard check screen.
  7. Select Looptest. This will bring up a screen with icons.
  8. Select only the check box under the CD-ROM/DVD icon (the icon is a picture of a Compact Disc) and click OK.
  9. When prompted, press the N key if you do not have a data CD in the drive or press the Y key if you do have a data CD in the drive
  10. The system will begin running the Looptest and continue until the battery is discharged and the system powers off.
NOTE: This may take up to three hours.
  11. After the system turns off because of a depleted battery, reconnect the AC adapter plug and power on the system.
NOTE: The system can be used normally while the battery is recharging.
  12. Once the battery is fully charged, run the Bat Check battery diagnostic program, see below, to determine the battery state. If the Bat Check utility determines that the battery is not at normal capacity then the battery may need to be replaced. If the battery life is not improved by depleting the battery fully and recharging it repeat above process. Replace the battery if the second deep discharge does not extend the charge life.
To run the battery diagnostic do the following:
  1. Click here to obtain the Battery Diagnostic diskette.
  2. Open a command prompt screen or if you created the bootable Bat Check diskette, boot from the diskette.
NOTE: Windows NT users must boot from the bootable diskette.
  3. Go to the directory for the floppy disk drive (usually A:) type batcheck f.exe
  4. Once the test has run, one of the following messages indicating the status of your battery will appear: Battery has normal capacity for its age and usage; or Battery shows capacity loss, contact your IBM Support Center or IBM authorized dealer.
Attended test
  1. Fully charge the battery.
  2. With the system powered off, disconnect the AC adapter plug.
  3. Run the system normally in battery mode until 8 to 10% power remains.
  4. Shutdown and power off the system.
  5. While holding down the F1 key, power-on the system. This will bring up the EasySetup screen.
  6. Select the Test icon.
