ThinkPad cannot enable the microphone in the BIOS Setup



The microphone can be disabled in the BIOS Setup (BIOS Setup -> Security -> I/O Port Access -> Microphone).  The microphone will not be displayed in the Windows Device Manager after saving the BIOS Setup and rebooting the system.

However, it cannot be enabled when following the Item Specific Help of the BIOS Setup which states "To enable Microphone, select Enabled, and remove AC power. Then, fully shutdown and power on the system."

Even when the user follows this Help text, the microphone will remain disabled in the BIOS Setup and will be displayed as disabled in the Windows Device Manager.

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

  • ThinkPad

Affected systems:

  • T420
  • T420i
  • T420s
  • T420si
  • T520
  • T520i
  • W520
  • X220
  • X220i
  • X220 Tablet
  • X220i Tablet

System is configured with:

  • Conexant audio codec

Operating Systems

  • All Operating Systems



To resolve this issue, the user should perform the following steps:

  1. Go to the BIOS Setup.
  2. Go to Security, I/O Port Access, and then Microphone.
  3. Change the Microphone setting to “Enabled”.
  4. Go to Restart, Save Changes, and select “Save configuration changes now?”.
  5. Select Yes.
  6. Detach the AC adapter from the computer.
  7. Press and hold the Power button to shut down the system.
  8. Wait for 10 seconds.
  9. Power on the system.
  10. The microphone will be “Enabled” in the BIOS Setup or Windows Device Manager.


Additional Information

To enable the microphone of Conexant audio codec, the power to the codec must be shutdown and without the AC power supply for approximately 10 seconds.
