Firmware update for Seagate Momentus Thin 2.5" Hard Disk Drives

Symptom

Under certain conditions, Hard Disk Drive (HDD) performance can degrade causing excessive program load and boot times.

Affected configurations

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

  • ThinkStation
  • ThinkPad

The system is configured with:

  • One of the following Seagate Momentus Thin 2.5" HDD’s:
    • 160GB (ST160LT007) – PN 9ZV14D
    • 250GB (ST250LT007) – PN 9ZV14C
    • 250GB (ST250LT014) – PN 9YK14C
    • 320GB (ST320LT007) – PN 9ZV142
    • 320GB (ST320LT014) – PN 9YK142

To identify the correct drive, check the areas on the drive label as shown in the 320GB drive example below.

Solution

Update the drive's firmware using one the two listed methods below:

  1. The 2.5-inch SATA Hard Drive Firmware Update Utility (Bootable CD ISO) is located at the following URL:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-63685
  2. USB:
    seagate.zip
    1. Unpack the SEAGATE.ZIP file. The file will unzip to the SEAGATE subdirectory.
    2. Prepare a DOS bootable media such as a USB memory key. The SEAGATE.ZIP file will not create bootable media. Bootable media will need to be created by the user.
    3. Copy all of the files from the newly created SEAGATE subdirectory to the DOS bootable media.
    4. Safely remove the DOS bootable media.

Additional Information

Update process:

  1. Insert the DOS bootable media into the system (normally USB slot).
  2. Power the system on and ensure that it boots to the DOS bootable media.
  3. Allow the system to automatically detect the Seagate HDD and apply the HDD firmware update if appropriate.
  4. Allow the system to automatically reboot after the Seagate HDD firmware has been applied.
  5. Ensure the system boots to the DOS bootable media when it restarts.
  6. Visually verify that the Seagate HDD firmware has been updated as expected.
  7. Power the system off and remove the DOS bootable media.

NOTE: The user may need to change the boot order sequence on the ThinkPad or press the Enter key at power on/reboot to select boot from the USB key.

To create a bootable USB key:

  1. Find and right-click the Windows Command Prompt in your Start Menu and choose to run it as an Administrator.
  2. At the prompt, enter "diskpart" to launch the Windows disk management utility.  The command line should now read “DISKPART>”.
  3. Type "list disk" to show a list of all disk drives.  If your USB key is plugged into your PC, it should be listed here, along with other physical drives.  Note the USB key’s disk number.
  4. Type "select disk #" with the USB key’s disk number in place of #.
  5. Type "clean" for the utility to clean the disk which DiskPart will confirm.
  6. Type "create partition primary" to create a new bootable partition.
  7. Choose this partition by entering "select partition 1" and then mark it as active by typing "active".
  8. Format the key by entering "format fs=fat32".  This may take a few minutes.  DiskPart will display a progress percentage.
  9. Lastly, type "assign" to give this USB key a drive letter.  Close the DiskPart program by entering "exit".
