Some of these steps may not apply to your computer. Test your audio after performing each step:
Set the physical volume controls to an appropriate level
For ThinkPad A, G, R, T, X, and Z series systems, there are volume down, volume up, and mute EZ keys, which can be either round or rectangular. You can find them at the top of your keyboard:
For older ThinkPad systems, there may be a volume wheel on side of unit or the key combination of Fn and PgUp or PgDn will raise and lower the volume setting.
Verify that the Microsoft Windows volume is properly set and is not mute in the Taskbar Volume Control and in the applicable output controls in the Playback Master Volume Control. Also verify in the Master Volume Control that the Wave device is not muted and is set to a proper level. Click the speaker icon ( or ) on the Microsoft Windows system tray to open the Volume control. Note: If the speaker icon is not on the windows task bar, press F1 while the Windows desktop is active and search for "Volume control" for instructions on how to change the volume and add the speaker icon to the task bar
Double-click the speaker icon ( or ) on the Windows system tray to open the Master volume control.
Connect external speakers or headphones to the audio connectors on the ThinkPad system to verify audio.
Stereo headphone jack
The headphone jack is used for connecting a stereo headphone or external speakers.
Stereo line-in jack
This jack is used to accept audio signals from external devices, such as line output from a stereo or television system, or a musical instrument, into the computer sound system. Note:On some systems only.
This jack is used to connect a microphone to your computer when you want to record voice or other sounds on the hard disk. This port can also be used by speech-recognition software.
Verify that the latest BIOS for the ThinkPad system has been installed.
Load the default configuration in the BIOS.
For ThinkPad A, R, T, X and Z series systems
Turn on the computer.
While the "Press F1 for BIOS Setup Utility" or "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower left area of the screen, press the F1 key, blue Access IBM, or ThinkVantage button. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
Press the F9 key and then select Yes to load the default configuration.
Press the F10 key and then select Yes to save the configuration changes and exit.
For ThinkPad ThinkPad 600, 600E, 770, 770E/ED, 770X, and 770Z systems
Press and hold the F1 key, then turn on the computer. Hold the F1 key until the Easy-Setup menu appears. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
Select Initialize and then click OK
Click Exit, click Restart, and then click OK to restart the system.
